Tamarind has plethora of health benefits from reducing body inflammation to boosting respiratory health, strengthening the immune system to improving cardiovascular health, lowering cholesterol to healing skin conditions, preventing cancer to treating piles, the benefits are endless. - Digestive health: Due to its high fiber content, tamarind acts as a natural laxative. It is believed that tamarind increases the efficiency of the digestive system. It has the capability to stimulate bile activity that results in dissolving the food faster and stimulate gastric juice. - Cardiovascular health: Several studies have proved that tamarind is a great agent when it comes to reducing the blood cholesterol and blood pressure. The fiber content of the tamarind can filter out the LDL cholesterol from the arteries and the veins. The potassium content can reduce the blood pressure. Vitamin C present in tamarind can reduce the dangerous effect of the free radicals. The pulp of 2-3 tamarind seeds can be taken daily as this helps in to maintain cardiovascular health.
- Body circulation: Being a very good source of iron, a single serving of tamarind can cover up to 10 percent of the body’s iron requirement. A constant supply of iron is necessary for the body to keep up the production of RBC and proper oxygenation of all the organs of the body. Iron deficiency can create conditions such as fatigue, cognitive disorders, anemia, stomach related disorders, headaches etc.
- Weight Loss: Hydroxycitric Acid can be extracted from tamarind. The latter is a unique compound that greatly helps in reducing weight. Yoga is the healing system par excellence. It can help all of us stay healthy without medicines and surgeries. It is also the go-to modality for spiritual and mental peace. The selection of yoga asanas for different age groups is extremely critical in yoga. How asanas are done, at what time and for how long are some of the basics that matter a lot too.
Here are a few easy-to-do asanas for three different age groups:
Before the age of seven, children should not do yoga. This is because their heart’s capacity to pump blood is limited and it may not be able to handle the heightened load during practice.
1. Virabhadrasana: This asana strengthens the muscles of the legs and makes leg and back muscles flexible. It tones the abdominal organs too. It helps children be active and fit.
- Stand straight with your legs wide apart.
- Turn your right foot out by 90 degrees.
- And turn left foot in by 15 degrees.
- Lift both arms sideways to shoulder height with your palms facing upwards.
- Now breathe out and bend your right knee.
- Turn your head to your right. Push your hips down and hold the posture.
- Breathe in while you come up.
2. Naukasana: This asana works on the muscular, digestive, circulatory, nervous and hormonal systems, and gets rid of belly fat.
- Lie down flat on a mat on your back.
- Breathe in and hold the breath.
- Raise your arms, shoulders, head and trunk off the ground.
- Balance body on buttocks and keep the spine straight.
- Keep arms in the same line as your toes with palms facing downwards.
1. Sukhasana: This asana is excellent to calm and soothe. It eliminates anxiety.
Bend your knees and fold your legs towards your middle.
Cross your legs and keep the arches of the foot on the thighs.
Sit with your hips in a neutral position.
2. Trikonasana: This is a very good pose for the spine and pelvis. It cures a backache and is good for digestion.
- Stand erect, inhale and step to the right with left heel turned inward.
- Exhale and reach out over your foot with your right hand, bending to the right.
- Feel the stretch.
- Raise the left hand vertically upwards.
- Turn your head to look up towards the left thumb.
Age- 35 and above
1. Vajrasana: It improves blood supply to upper torso and head and builds stamina. Excellent for digestion and can be done on a full stomach.
- Stand on your knees with the lower legs stretched backwards, with toes crossing.
- Now lower your body to sit on your heels with buttocks resting on them.
- Keep your hands on knees and head straight.
- Breathe in deep and concentrate on the breath.
- Lie on your back with knees bent and legs together.
- Place your hands underneath the back supporting it.
- Exhale and swing your knees and thighs over your torso.
- Raise your hips and abdomen to support the position.
- Straighten your legs parallel to the ground.

Ayurveda, the ancient Hindu science of medicine, was developed over thousands of years ago (with initial mentions found in the Atharva Veda) and is based centrally on the concept of balance. This balance refers to the equilibrium between the mind and physical health to maintain a proper functioning body existing in perfectly harmonious co-existence. When does Ayurveda flourish : If anything aids the flourishing of Ayurveda and herb growth, it is the rains, or the season of monsoon. The months of July-September provide the optimum temperature and environment required for proper growth of herbs, and in turn, is the best time for bodily growth as well. Advancements in science and technology and extensive research has proved, that the maximum amount of growth of the body takes place during the rainy season.
Understanding the concept of Vata dosha : Vata is a concept that, according to the ancient science of Ayurveda, governs all movement of the human body, along with regulating almost all bodily systems such as the nervous system and the elimination or excretory system. When the Vata dosha dominates (which is usually congruous with the Monsoon season), it is said that you tend to be more energetic and creative. Greater energy leads you to be more enthusiastic and lively, thus aiding your growth process as well.
Growth in height, however, is not universal in all cases. It is mostly seen in people aged 25 or below, as during that period, the bones are still relatively soft and developing.
What can you do:
- Engage in Yoga: Engaging in proper yoga and exercising regularly will go a long way in increasing height, especially when the Vata dosha is prevalent. In this regard, mention needs to be made of the Tarasana (Tadasana/Mountain Pose). Tarasana mainly exercises the foot muscles (both intrinsic and extrinsic), along with the diaphragm and quadriceps - all of which work towards increasing height.
- Eat right: The one imperative aspect that cannot be overlooked, and which goes hand in hand with yoga and exercising is maintaining a proper diet. Suggested foods include protein rich foods such as gram flour, pulses, milk and other dairy products, black gram, beans, etc. all of which will help you to grow those extra few inches. Herbs such as ashwagandha, giloy, bala, shatavari, etc., in certain specific ratios, can also work wonders. It is advisable that you contact your doctor to know the correct amounts of each which will be suitable for you.

Ayurveda is effective because it treats the root of the problem in order to treat it. According to this ancient system of medicine, bronchitis, which is infection of the windpipe, is known as ‘kasa roga’. According to Ayurveda, bronchitis happens primarily due to impaired digestion. This is the reason why Ayurveda treats bronchitis through drugs that have the ability to treat both the lungs and the digestive system. Chronic bronchitis is also caused due to airborne allergens like cigarette smoke and pollution.
The main symptom of bronchitis is chronic inflammation of the bronchial tubes or the windpipes that carry air to the lungs. This infection causes profuse secretion of phlegm. Other notable symptoms are chest pain, chronic cough, fever, poor digestion and loss of appetite, and shortness of breath. Children, senior citizens and those with an impaired immune system are extremely prone to bronchitis. If left untreated for long, bronchitis can manifest as tuberculosis. Another disease bronchitis can mutate into is bronchial asthma.
- Haldi or turmeric, commonly used Ayurvedic spices in the world, is the most common home remedy for bronchitis. One can take a teaspoonful of haldi mixed in a glass of milk in the night for relief. Haldi is more effective if taken on an empty stomach.
- The juice of vasa is also an excellent remedy for bronchitis. One can take it twice or thrice daily.
- Ginger juice and honey mixed in a cup of warm water is also good for easy expectoration of phlegm.
- One can also mix equal quantities of dried ginger, black pepper and long pepper with honey and take a teaspoonful thrice every day.
- Tulsi or holy basil is a great cure for bronchitis. Water boiled with tulsi leaves brings instant relief to a sore throat. One can use this water for gargling too.
- In case of a congested throat ‘khadiradi vati’ gives effective relief, due to catechu that helps relieve congestion.
Shringyadi churna, kaphaketu, kaphachintamani, sitopaladi churna, pravala pisthi, rasa sindur, talisadi churna, haridra khand and vasarishta are a few effective Ayurvedic medicines for bronchitis.
- Protection from cold is key. Cold water and winds should be avoided. Use warm water for bathing, wear warm clothes and avoid excess humidity, dust and allergic pollen. Heavy physical exercises should also be avoided.
- Stay away from cold foods like curd and sour substances, fruits like bananas and guavas, and from alcohol and tobacco.
- Also, one should eat foods that are easy to digest. Lots of leafy vegetables will give one the vitamins and mineral required to fight bronchitis.
