Back Ache - 5 Common Reasons Behind It!

Back Ache - 5 Common Reasons Behind It!

You might be an elite athlete or just a commoner. There is always a possibility for you to develop back pain while carrying out your daily activities. You might not be aware, but regular activities such as sitting at the computer, running on the treadmill or simply crawling into your bed for a good night sleep can affect the health of your spine. You are always at the risk of damaging your spine, these damages lead to back pain. It has been found that faulty postures can cause back pain by causing straining of the back muscles, injuring the tendons and damaging the vertebrae or ligaments. Back pain can be caused due to the overuse of a particular activity or for undertaking a new activity.

However, it is often very difficult to pin point the exact reason behind the occurrence of back pain. Here are the common causes for back pain:

  1. The screen trouble: You are likely to develop back pain, if you spend long hours sitting in front of the commuter. Researchers believe that spending nine hours or more a day by texting on smart phones or tablets or typing on the computer is dangerous. You must take break at regular intervals while working on the gadgets to avoid back pain. Your monitor of the computer should be placed at the level of your eye.
  2. You skip the core exercises: The health of your spine depends on the core regions of your body as well. The core region includes your back, side, pelvic, and buttock muscles. It is important that you practise the core exercises like lunges, squats, and planks. They help in strengthening the muscles around your core region and keep your spine healthy.
  3. Improper sleep pattern: Your sleeping pattern is as much important as your walking or sitting pattern, when it comes to the health of your spine. If you sleep on your stomach, pressure is placed on joints and muscles. This may cause straining of the muscles or ligaments in the spine region.
  4. Smoking: Cigarettes are not just unhealthy for your lungs or heart, they are equally bad for the spine. Cigarettes contain nicotine. Researchers have found that nicotine hampers the flow of blood to vertebrae and disks in between the spine. Insufficient supply of blood to the spine region results in low absorption of calcium by the bones in this region. Therefore, you end up developing back pain.
  5. Blame it on your emotions: Back pain adds to your emotional stress. But believe it or not, the reverse is equally true. Depression and emotional stress increases or sometimes even initiates back pain. When an individual is depressed, his or her glands releases stress hormones known as cortisol. This hormone causes the muscles in the back region to tense up.

Dislocated Knee Cap - How It Can Be Prevented?

MBBS, MS - Orthopaedics
Orthopedist, Delhi
Dislocated Knee Cap - How It Can Be Prevented?

Patella dislocation is mostly found among women and people associated with the high impact sport. It refers to a condition where the kneecap gets completely displaced from its normal location. Lateral dislocation is more common that involves the damage of ligaments and muscles. An immediate response to a patellar injury should be to cut down inflammation, stop engaging the patellofemoral joint and to relieve pain. One of the best ways to do it is to follow the RICE mechanism- rest, ice, compression, and elevation. Once this is done, one should seek urgent medical attention.

Symptoms of patellar dislocation:

  1. Immediate swelling of the knee area
  2. Extreme tenderness around the area of the knee cap
  3. Instability while bearing weight
  4. Acute pain near the knee cap area
  5. Quadriceps muscle weakness
  6. Redness to the affected area and instant fever as a result of the pain
  7. Warm feeling of the affected area

Immediate Treatment

If patella remains dislocated, consult to doctor immediately. To put the kneecap back in place, doctor may give you pain medication to relax his or her knee muscles, and then gently apply pressure to move the kneecap back into place. This process is called a "reduction."

Nonsurgical Treatment

  • Immobilization. You may wear a brace for 4 to 6 weeks. This stabilizes the knee while it heals.

  • Weightbearing. Because putting weight on the knee may cause pain and slow the healing process, you may require crutches for the first week or two after the injury.

  • Physical therapy. Once the knee has started to heal, you doctor will require physical therapy to help you to regain normal motion. Specific exercises will strengthen the thigh muscles holding the knee joint in place. Your commitment to the exercise program is important for a successful recovery. Typically, patient return to activity 3 to 6 weeks after the injury.

Because a dislocation often damages knee tissue, the patella often remains looser, or more unstable, than it was before the injury. As a result, the patella may dislocate again. Recurrences also are common if the dislocation was caused by an irregularity in the knee structure. Ongoing exercises, such as cycling, can strengthen quadriceps muscles in the thigh and prevent future patellar dislocations.

Surgical Treatment

If your patella dislocates multiple times, or continues to be unstable despite therapy and bracing, surgery may be recommended to correct the problem. The type of surgery will depend on the cause of the unstable kneecap. Surgical treatments often involve reconstructing the ligaments that hold the patella in place.

Rehabilitation:
Post-surgical knee rehabilitation is a key step to a full recovery from patellar dislocation. The process of rehabilitation not only rebuilds the muscles but negate the chances of future dislocation. It also focuses on strength, endurance, power and full motion of the knee. The balance and agility of the limb are also focused upon.

How to prevent patellar dislocation?
Since the risk of recurrence of a patella dislocation is 50 percent, prevention procedures should be at the top of the list.

  1. Refraining from high impact sports.
  2. Wearing a knee cap
  3. Continuing the daily exercise recommended by the physiotherapist to ensure non recurrence of the patella dislocation. If you wish to discuss any specific problem, you can consult a physiotherapist.

Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. Although there can be many causes for heel pain like spurs, fascial inflammation, infection, trauma etc but normally plantar fasciitis is the most common cause especially if there is no history of any injury or any s/s of inflammation or infection like swelling, skin redness etc. This kind of pain is usually due to inflammation of your heel fascia. It is chronic pain which get aggravated especially when you walk more and is better with rest. Treatment modalities are aimed at relieving inflammation of the fascia, like ice packs, physical therapy, footwear modification and anti-inflammatory therapy. Also can you please get a few blood tests done empty stomach and send reports across to me: cbc, esr, crp and serum vitamin d and uric acid levels. Do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance. You can also discuss your case and treatment plans with me in a greater detail in a private consultation.

4 Causes Behind Sciatica Pain!

4 Causes Behind Sciatica Pain!

Sciatica pain arises from the sciatic nerve which is the single largest nerve in our body. It consists of individual nerve roots, which branching out from the lower back of the spine to the back of each leg and combining together forms the sciatic nerve. The origination of the sciatic pain lies in the lower back of the body and radiates down the buttock to the sciatic nerve.

Causes of the sciatica pain

  1. ArthritisIf an individual is diagnosed with arthritis, then he or she can expect a throbbing pain or numbness down till the leg.
  2. Herniated disc: Another cause could be a herniated disc in the lower back of the body.
  3. SpondylosisSpondylosis in the lower back would also be a reason for the development of the sciatica pain.
  4. PIVD/DISC bulge

Other causes are a spinal injury, diseased degenerative disc, infection on and around the lower back. The pain would worsen, if an individual is in an occupation where he or she has to stand or sit for hours at length. The lifting of heavy things would strain the sciatic nerves as well.

How to identify sciatica pain?
Sciatica pain varies from infrequent to a constant throbbing down the lower back. So initially it is difficult to detect whether it is sciatic pain or not. But when the constant pain in the lower back leads right down till the toes and foot, it is really time for an individual to get in touch with a doctor. The pain can give a burning sensation almost searing making it difficult for the person to stand up or walk properly. Along with the pain, one can feel fatigued. An involvement of the spinal cord is rare in the sciatic pain but is possible.

Treatment for sciatica pain
Sciatica can be treated in both surgical and non-surgical way. Surgical treatment is rare as sciatica tends to respond well with non-surgical treatments. If the pain continues for over a month despite treatment, surgical treatment will be considered. The non-surgical pain treatment would include physical exercises and oral medications along with natural treatment.

  1. Medications: Painkiller medications prescribed by the doctor can be used to reduce sciatica. Medicines like aspirin, non-steroidal or oral steroids can help reduce the pain.
  2. Steroid injection: Epidural steroid injection acts faster as it is injected in the affected area, thus providing relief from the pain quickly.
  3. Exercise: Early morning exercises can be quite helpful.
  4. Percutaneous Endoscopic DiscectomyThe surgical treatment of Percutaneous endoscopic disc dissectomy constitutes a large part of interventional pain physicians and it has evolved considerably in terms of surgical technique and instrumentation. Percutaneous endoscopic discectomy is a relatively new technique for removing lumbar disc herniation. It involves using an endoscope to visualize the disc removal. The discectomy is performed through a posterolateral approach using specially developed instruments. The advantage of percutaneous endoscopic discectomy is that the disc is approached posterolaterally through the triangle of Kambin without the need for bone or facet resection thus preserving spinal stability. The procedure is day care and is done under local anaesthesia.

Hello, if there's pain through the back of your leg then you might have sciatica which is pinching of nerves between the vertebrae. Exercise to strengthen your core muscles would help you along with some postural exercises.

Dear Sanjana, Many Thanks for asking about your concern. The discomfort in the knee along with swelling suggest something that is still triggering and leading to these symptoms. A good thorough clinical assessment by Physiotherapist & Orthopedic Doctor can reveal the primary diagnosis aided with MRI to confirm it. Depending on the the diagnosis and presenting symptoms, a treatment plan can be worked out which can include exercises, local therapeutic modalities, and if necessary arthroscopic surgery (key hole procedure) by Orthopedic Surgeon. I wish you good health. If there is anything further, please feel free to contact. Best Wishes

First of all, you need to get an x ray done of the knee joints and other joints which are painful. Secondly, get your ra factor checked along with uric acid levels and esr. Consult a good ayurveda doctor as ayurveda provides very good treatment for such problems. Avoid eating curd, peas, excess tea/coffee, brinjal, rajmah and heavy fried food and maida items. Include methi, ginger, turmeric in your food. Garlic and onion should be used liberally in food daily.

I am 33 years old I have pain in right hand starting from my little finger upto my elbow. Due to biting by my younger brother during a fight among us. I am not able to lift things nd cant grab things with my normal effort. Kindly help

Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. Can you kindly tell me where exactly were you bitten by your brother? and maybe you can send a clinical picture of that area? you have actually mentioned inability in lifting things, is that due to pain or weakness of muscles. See what we have to rule out is whether there is any nerve injury of any kinds which usually does not happen in bites etc? I might have to see a neurological (motor and sensory) examination of your involved limb preferably done by a good physical therapist so that I can understand the situation. Also tell me whether any tests have been done to establish a diagnosis. Do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance.
