Dental care should begin as soon as a child’s first tooth appears, usually around six months. “Teeth can be wiped with a clean, damp cloth or a very soft brush. At about age 2, you can let kids try brushing for themselves -- although it’s important to supervise.”

Kindly apply orahelp gum paint twice daily for 15 days. Take multivitamins for a month. Also notice that you are not constipated, stressed or having lack of sleep, having acidity problem as these are few of the reasons for ulcers. Avoid hot and spicy food as this may irritate the ulcers. Brush your teeth twice daily using correct brushing technique to maintain your oral hygiene.

Visit a dentist as soon as possible and wether a filling is to be done or rct (root canal treatment) needs to be done depends on the x ray findings.

Hello doctor, my mother is 40 years old. She is suffered from severe toothache for nearly 2 weeks. She went to hospital and that dentist gave just tablets. She followed that tablets regularly but it is not cured. What should I do now?

BDS
Dentist, Bangalore
Tablets is just for the symptom relief and not the treatment for your cause. When pain is there, genarally treatment is not done as patient will not be co operative and anaesthesia may not also work. So Dr. Will prescribe the medicines and will ask you to visit back for treatment. Please do visit back your dentist for the proper treatment.

If you see blood after brushing your teeth then it is bleeding from your gums and not from your throat. Kindly get scaling done and use gum paint twice daily for 15 days. Brush your teeth twice daily using correct brushing technique.

I am 40 yrs and my teeth is upper open bite and slightly upfront . It is possible to correct the teeth in this age ?.

BDS, MDS Prosthodontics
Dentist, Mumbai
If the tooth is out because of bad gym health it may not be possible without gum therapy/ root canal/ extraction and bridges. If gum condition is healthy then braces can be done at even 40 years of age.

Hi, I am 24 years old. I need your help how to clean my teeth from unwanted marks.
We need more investigations to decide upon treatment. You may need deep cleaning. Rinse your mouth thoroughly with a mouth wash after every meals. Advance procedures can be done with laser. Dental tips: - visit a dentist every six months for cleaning and a thorough dental check-up. Limit sugary food to avoid tooth decay. Gargle your mouth thoroughly after every meal. Scrub gently to clean your tongue with a tongue cleaner. Floss all your teeth inter dentally & brush twice daily, morning & night, up & down short vertical strokes, with ultra-soft bristles, indicator brush. Tooth brush to be changed every 2 months.

Do not worry about the shade of teeth. Only milk teeth are milky white. Permanent teeth are always offwhite to slight yellow. Color of teeth is just like your skin tone which may be different for differnt people. No tooth paste can provide you pearl white sparkling teeth as generally claimed in advertisements. Regular brushing and flossing twice will keep your teeth and gums healthy. Dental bleaching can help you but it is also not permanent.

All About Tooth Sensitivity

All About Tooth Sensitivity

Tooth sensitivity is a condition when the nerve ending in the teeth are overly sensitive to hold hot and cold conditions. Drinking and eating hot or cold food may cause a sharp pain in the tooth. A material called dentin, which is what makes up the inside of your tooth, is protected by the enamel in the crown and the cementum in the root of the tooth. In cases when the dentin loses its covering, teeth may be become sensitive.

Causes of sensitive teeth
1. Inflammation caused by bacteria may lead to sensitive teeth.
2. Gum diseases such as gingivitis may cause the gums to retract and reveal the roots of your teeth.
3. Constantly grinding your teeth can cause the enamel to break down, which leads to exposure of the dentin.
4. Accumulation of plaque can cause sensitive teeth.
5. Various acidic foods such as lemon cause the enamel to be worn out.
6. Sensitive teeth is caused by decay of the tooth.
7. Various dental procedures such as teeth restoration and cleaning of the teeth cause the teeth to be sensitive.

Treatments for sensitive teeth
1. You need to use dental products that contain fluoride. Fluoride products tend to decrease teeth sensitivity.
2. Restrict consumption of acidic foods such as lemon and some dairy products.
3. If you grind your teeth then start using mouth guard.
4. Follow proper dental hygiene, such as brushing and flossing on a regular basis to keep teeth sensitivity at bay.
5. You should use a toothbrush that has soft bristles so that the gum tissue is not affected while brushing.
6. You may use a toothpaste that has been made for people who have sensitive teeth.
7. You may apply fluoride varnishes to root surfaces that have been exposed.
8. You may cover up root surfaces with white fillings.
9. Application of dentin sealers to root surfaces that have been exposed may help in preventing tooth sensitivity.
10. Laser is also effective to fix tooth sensitivity.

Eating food gives you fibre than drinking fruit juices. Fibre is good for digestion and has cleansing action on teeth. Eating fruit is always better. Whitening tooth pastes are safe, but the action is temporary/ short lived. There are other ways to whiten your teeth.

I am having ulcer on my lower lip. The problem is that it is recurrent twice in a month. It is usually appearing when I am eating chicken. This starts about 6 years ago. Ot is very disturbing and the wound is very big size.

MDS - Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery
Dentist, Chennai
If the mouth ulcer is causing a lot of pain, gently rub a small ice cube over the spot or rinse your mouth with ice-cold water. You could also chew on a clove bud (lavang) and direct the juice generated to the area where the ulcer is located. Clove buds are a great ingredient to cure sore throat too. To prevent the ulcerated area from getting infected, make it a point to rinse your mouth with a little salt water. Remember, this won’t make the ulcer disappear, but it can help reduce the pain. Honey is a natural humectant. It helps reduce scarring and hastens the process of new tissue growth. This, along with its anti-microbial effect ensures faster healing of the mouth ulcer. Chew a few leaves of tulsi along with some water about three to four times every day. This will help in getting rid of ulcers faster and also have a preventive action against their recurrence. Applying a little coconut oil directly onto the mouth ulcer or chewing some coconut (fresh or dry) helps reduce pain and inflammation and hence, ulcers heal faster. Mix some sugar to crushed khus-khus seeds and consume this mixture for instant relief from ulcers. You could apply a little ghee directly to the ulcerated area, or drink a glass of buttermilk two or three times every day. Mouth ulcers left untreated generally go away in a week or so; with these home remedies, you can expect faster relief. However, if you notice an ulcer in the mouth that is persistently present although it does not cause you any pain, do not neglect it or try to treat it with home remedies beyond a few days. Make it a point to see a doctor soon because often, a painless mouth ulcer is one of the earliest signs of oral cancer.

Dear lybrate user, space left empty by removing a tooth is not good because it leads to bone loss in that area. Also, the neighboring teeth and the teeth in the opposing arch also begin to show slight movement towards the empty space which disturbs the normal relation between upper and lower teeth. You are still at a growing age. Don't think of extracting your tooth and leaving the gap empty.

Brush your teeth after each meal and at bedtime with a soft-bristle toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Soak the brush in warm water to make the bristles even softer.Floss gently once a day.Rinse your mouth four to six times a day, especially after meals, with salt and baking soda. Try a solution of half a teaspoon of salt and half a teaspoon of baking soda in one cup of warm water. When radiation therapy starts, use fluoride rinses and gels. These are an important part of caring for the health of your mouth during cancer treatment.Drink sips of water throughout the day, and use artificial saliva to moisten the mouth.Avoid mouthwashes and other dental products that contain alcohol. Products designed for people with dry mouth are available without a prescription.Use a cool mist humidifier, especially at night.
