You can continue breast feeding with semi solid foods at frequent intervals. You do not require any medicine at the moment.

Research suggests that people with mild eczema who drink oolong tea three times a day may show improvement in itching and other symptoms. Compounds in the tea called polyphenols appear to be responsible.

Your baby is doing extremely well. She has gained appropriate weight. Please do not force feed the child. The rate of growth is slowed down in second half of first year thus requirement also goes down. Get her hb and routine urine exam to rule out anemia and urinary tract infection. Regards

Is Your Child Suffering From Rickets? 3 Ways To Deal With It!

MBBS, MD - Paediatrics
Pediatrician, Mumbai
Is Your Child Suffering From Rickets? 3 Ways To Deal With It!

A nutritional disorder, the problem of rickets occurs if your child suffers from a deficiency of calcium, phosphate or Vitamin D. It causes softened and damaged bones, skeletal deformities, impaired development of the bone's growth plate (a spot of growing tissue found near the end of a long bone in adolescents and children) and stunted growth.

Here are few very simple ways you can prevent your child from getting it:

1. Having Vitamin D and calcium rich foods - One of the best ways to prevent this nutritional disorder from affecting your child is by making sure he or she have foods that are high in Vitamin D and calcium. Egg yolks, fish oil or fatty fish like salmon and mackerel are some of the Vitamin D foods that your child can have to strengthen his bones. Even foods that have Vitamin D added to it such as cereals, orange juice, milk and infant formula can also be given to your child. Sources of calcium can be soyabeans, nuts, broccoli, cabbage, cheese and yoghurt.

2. Going out in the sun - Considered to be an excellent source of Vitamin D, getting your child exposed to sunlight is another excellent way of getting most of this nutrient, as well as preventing him or her from developing rickets. Although the exposure time may vary from individual to individual, about 10-15 minutes of sun exposure without sunscreen can help.

3. Having Vitamin D supplements - Even the consumption of Vitamin D supplements can reduce your child's risk of getting rickets. Since mother's milk contains less than the recommended Vitamin D amount, infants too need to be put on Vitamin D supplements of 400 IU each day. For teenagers and young children, the recommended dosage is 600 IU of Vitamin D every day. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a pediatrician.

HEALTHY FOOD INTAKE FOR STRENUOUS STUDY DAYS

PGDD, RD, Bachelor of Home Science
Dietitian/Nutritionist, Mumbai
HEALTHY FOOD INTAKE FOR STRENUOUS STUDY DAYS

Exams are here again. As always we tend to neglect our food in the process of concentrating on studies. But we forget that to concentrate on studies we have to concentrate on taking a healthy diet.

Here are a few diet tips that will help you balance your study as well as diet.

1. Eat small and nourishing meals every three hours, instead of just 2-3 heavy meals. The brain needs a constant supply of energy and a heavy meal will divert the blood supply to digest the heavy meal.

2. Your daily diet must include 2-3 fresh, seasonal fruits. Start your day with a boost of fruit energy. Have a banana with a tablespoon of honey as the first meal of the day. Fruits provide you not only with fiber, vitamins and minerals but also simple and complex carbohydrates for short and long duration of energy supply when studying. The fiber will also help to keep the bowel movement clear.

3. A good breakfast is a must for anyone. The breakfast must contain foods with complex carbohydrates like flakes, oats, rawa (semolina), daliya (wheat cracks), poha (rice flakes) or pav with vegetables and a protein source such as eggs, milk, pulse, sprouts or paneer.

4. Nuts and dry fruits like almonds, walnuts, and dates provide nutrients which enhance brain power and concentration and also provide an extended source of energy supply.

5. Include potassium-rich coconut water, citrus fruits/ juices and soups in your diet.

6. Green leafy vegetables, pulses, and nuts will also provide vitamins and minerals to help avoid anemia. (Anemia is a common problem causing difficulty in concentration.)

7. Including milk as a bedtime meal and curd/lassi/buttermilk after lunch or as a mid-meal assures a supply of Vitamin B12 too.

8. Drink plenty of water to keep your body hydrated. Always keep a glass of water beside you to remember to take sips of water every 15 minutes.

9. Basic exercise like stretching, walking or yoga with meditation will help to reduce negative stress and also help you to get good sleep.

10. Avoid junk foods as they will provide you no nutrition.

11. Avoid stimulants like tea, coffee or colas as they may seem to perk you up but the energy does not sustain for long. Too much may even cause bloating or acidity.

12. Avoid aerated drinks as they are full of sugar and may cause a rapid rise in blood sugar levels causing a sudden rise and drop in sugar levels.

13. Chocolates may seem to may you feel good but the sudden rise and fall of sugar it causes in the blood can lead to trembling nervousness and panic.

14. Have your dinner if possible a little earlier than 9-10pm.

15. Keep about 2 hours between dinner and your bedtime.

16. Have a sound sleep for at least 7-8 hours daily.

Remember your body and mind need the fuel to help you perform the best. So, nourish it and take care of it and it will do the same for you.

My daughter is of 9 years. She is still suffering from bed wetting. What may be the reason? Any suggestions for treatment?

Nocturnal enuresis is more common in female pt. Initially we try alarm therapy. Never annoy with your children. Encourage her for going to toilet. Help her to wake up two times in night. If not responding to alarm therapy then write me.

The sixth month of pregnancy brings along a larger frequency of headaches along with it. Chocolate, caffeine, dehydration, over exposure to sunlight or low blood sugar levels can be the triggers to it. If taking rest does not help, consult with your doctor or pharmacist.

Risk of thalassemia disease of my ...
As you said your baby has thalassemia minor or trait. It will not affect the baby in a major way, she is going to have only slightly lower hemoglobin then peers. She may not be able to donate blood. And she carries a risk of having Thalassemia major offspring if married to a guy with thalassemia trait. Nothing else.

If it is not associated with dehydration or weight loss, you need not worry about it. Small frequent stools are normal at this age. If you really want to be sure about it - you may go for microscopic examination of stool in a laboratory. That will confirm the cause.
