Cervical spondylitis never goes from roots so first you have to get rid of present symtoms then continue home exercise regimen for life time. You can set cervical traction unit at your home and take it two hours twice a day for 21 days continuously then after seeing the result opt for operative procedures.

Ayurvedic Treatment Panchakarma For Cervical Spondylosis!

Ayurvedic treatment panchakarma for Cervical spondylosis

How to Diagnose Cervical spondylosis?
1) careful history taking is very important
2) Examine the neck for any congenital deformity
3) A quick neurological examination can be easily done Always check grip strength, look for fasciculation and wasting to rule out cervical myelopathy
4) Always check Romberg's sign
5) Supinator jerk, knee-jerk, and plantar reflexes are to be done
6) We should rule out diabetes
7) X-Ray, MRI scan is useful to know cervical myelopathy and its grade confirms the diagnosis (not needed most of the times)

Ayurvedic Treatment in acute phase-
The acute herniated cervical disc should be visualized as kaphavruta vata, asayapakarsya gati and chronic degeneration should be visualized, as dhatuks aya. Hence the treatment is done accordingly.

Ayurvedic Lepam (Kapha vatahara usna)-
1) Apply the warm paste of K4 curnam or R4 curnam or N4 curnam or Kolakulatthadi curnam with tamarind juice and little vinegar in the cervical region.
2) Apply it twice daily.Keep it until it gets dry and wipes it off with warm water
3) Valuka sveda (Ruksasvedam, with dry husk or kulattham (economical) for 20 minutes or until sweat appears.)
4) Oil should not be applied for first few days

Other important panchakarma

  • Vaman
  • Virechan
  • Basti
  • Nasyam
  • Shirodhara
  • Shirovasti

Neck Exercises
To be started after pain relief and after the acute phase for strengthening the Neck Muscles.

What's The Best Way To Treat Spondylitis?

What's The Best Way To Treat Spondylitis?

If you suffer from persistent backaches and neck pain, you may be diagnosed with spondylitis. Spondylitis refers to degenerative changes of the spine, such as the formation of bone spurs and degeneration of spinal discs. This condition can affect the neck, upper or mid back and lower back. Of these, spondylitis of the neck- cervical spondylitis and lower back- lumbar spondylitis are most common.

Spondylitis is considered to be triggered by age. As a person grows older, the wear and tear of the bones and ligaments of the spinal column can lead to the development of bone spurs and osteoarthritis. Age can also cause the discs between vertebrae to weaken and degenerate leading to bulging discs and herniating spinal discs. Most people experience the first symptoms of spondylitis between the age of 20 and 50. A family history of spondylitis and being prone to injuries also increases a person’s risk of suffering from spondylitis.

Since spondylitis is a degenerative disease, there is no cure for this condition. However, the pain associated with it can be managed. Thus, treatment for spondylitis is very similar to treatment for neck or back pain. This treatment can be in the form of pain medication, exercise, physical therapy and minimally invasive surgery. Depending on the extent of spinal damage the doctor may prescribe steroids that need to be injected directly into the intervertebral spaces. This is also known as epidural injections.

Spondylitis patients are often advised to follow their normal schedule and refrain from bed rest as this can prolong recovery. However, at the same time, you should not undertake any activity that puts additional pressure or stress on the spinal column. Alternating between warm and cold compresses can help relieve the pain associated with spondylitis. Additionally, try sleeping with a pillow between your legs to relieve low back pain.

Special pillows that offer cervical support can help relieve spondylitis of the neck.

Surgery may be considered in cases where this condition causes or worsens nerve damage. Spinal decompression surgery involves relieving pressure on the nerves in the spinal column that may be caused by a herniated disc, spinal stenosis or foraminal stenosis. This surgery can be performed through a laminectomy, discectomy or foraminotomy. Bone spurs in the spinal column or a vertebral disc can also be removed surgically. However, these surgeries are rarely performed as most patients respond well to non-surgical treatments.

Torn Meniscus - Symptoms And Treatment Of It!

Torn Meniscus - Symptoms And Treatment Of It!

Your knee is guarded and cushioned by a cartilage known as meniscus. A meniscus tear, therefore, is an extremely painful and discomforting situation. It occurs very frequently and has emerged as one of the most commonly occurring cartilage injuries. What makes a meniscus tear an extremely common phenomenon is the way it can tear that is all it takes is a twist of the knee for it to happen.

People involved in sports mostly face the brunt of this form of injury. The risk of getting meniscus torn increases with age and tends to occur at the slightest change of direction of movement.

Symptoms
Some of the symptoms of a torn meniscus are:

  1. Pain and inflammation: It goes without saying that an internal injury of the cartilage or tearing away of it would inevitably result in extreme pain and inflammation near the knee.
  2. Immobility: The extreme pain and inflammation, which follows will inevitably make it difficult to move. Since the pain occurs in the joint, you will have difficulty in walking and any forceful movement will only aggravate the pain.
  3. Locking of the knee: Locking of the knee refers to a situation when you are unable to move your knee. This occurs most commonly after you have your meniscus torn.

Initial treatment

The doctors initiate the treatment with some simple measures to avoid surgery. The measures include:

  • Rest: The first thing any doctor would recommend would be to take proper rest and do not indulge in any activity that aggravates your knee pain, or forces you to twist, rotate or pivot your knee. If you are suffering from severe pain, crutches might help in taking pressure off your knee to promote healing.
  • Apply ice: In order to get some relief, applying ice is a suitable option. If you apply ice every day for some time, it wonders in reducing swelling and the consequent pain.
  • Medication: There are some pain relievers that can ease knee pain.

Therapy

The doctor then recommends physical therapy to strengthen the muscles around your knee area and other parts of the leg to stabilize and support the knee joint.

Surgery

If your knee remains sour even after the therapy, then your doctor would recommend you to undergo a surgery. It is possible to repair a torn meniscus, especially in children and young adults. If the tear still doesn't get repaired, the meniscus might be tripped through surgery, through tiny incisions using an arthroscope. After the surgery, you will have to do exercises to optimize knee strength and stability.

How To Deal With Achilles Tendon?

How To Deal With Achilles Tendon?

Achilles Tendon pain is an orthopedic condition that can originate from tears and ruptures to the AchillesTendon, which is known as one of the strongest and also the longest tendon in the human body. It is a band of tissues that decides the quality of your movements and motions to a great extent, as it connects the heel with the calf. Therefore, any injury to this tendon can decrease the strength and support to the muscles and create a painful situation. So how can you deal with this pain? Read on to know more.

  • Rice Therapy: Rice is a commonly used term by orthopedic specialist. It refers to Rest, Ice, Compression with a bandage, and finally Elevation. The patient must take lots of rest as well as use ice packs to deal with the injury and acute pain. Finally, the area must be compressed with a bandage and kept elevated on cushions.
  • Surgery: For very severe cases, the orthopedic specialist can recommend surgery as well. This kind of surgery aims at reattaching the displaced or ruptured tendon which may have reached such a fate through a sports or any other kind of injury. The doctor may also place your leg in a cast for a few weeks to keep it at complete rest.
  • Pain Medication: The doctor can also prescribe pain relievers that contain Ibuprofen as well as acetaminophen or even naproxen. These medicines should be taken in moderation as per the doctor's prescription. Usually, this kind of medication is taken only when unbearable pain is experienced by the patient.
  • Thermotherapy or Heat Treatment: The use of heat for chronic pain or even pain that has been ailing for over 48 hours is known as thermotherapy. This therapy uses heating pads and hot water bottles to help relieve the pain. One must be careful while applying anything hot to the site of the injury. Use a towel to wrap the hot water bottle or heating pad so that there is no scalding or leaking on to the skin.
  • Footwear: It is important to prevent continuous injury and pain to the already injured Achilles tendon. To do this, you must wear supportive and comfortable footwear that has heel lifts and other customized orthotics built into the shoes.

Taking care of Achilles Tendon pain is a matter of taking various precautions and supportive actions that lead to better healing.

All About Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury

In general, anterior cruciate ligament injuries, or ACL injuries, are understood to be tears in any of the several knee ligaments joining the upper leg bone and the lower leg bone. This can vary from minor injuries, such as small ligament tears, to more serious cases, like complete tears or when the ligament and one of the bones gets displaced from the other. These injuries usually occur during sports activities, like soccer, basketball, football, gymnastics, tennis, volleyball, etc. An untreated ACL injury can lead to a condition called an ACL deficiency. This can cause a lot of problems with regard to knee movements as the bones may rub against each other, causing a lot of pain. In some cases, the cartilage covering the ends of the bones may get damaged, eventually tearing and trapping the cushion pads supporting the knee joints.

Symptoms

Signs and symptoms of anterior cruciate ligament may include:
1. You are unable to move properly.
2. You experience immense pain while walking up and down stairs.
3. You are unable to engage much in physical activities.
4. Your knee begins to swell gradually.
5. You can sense a loud popping sensation when moving your knee.
6. You experience feelings of instability.

Causes

Anterior cruciate ligament injuries generally occur during :sports. Here are some common possible instances that might happen during a game :

1. Sudden arrest in motion
2. An unsteady landing from a jump
3. Direct blows to the knee from tackles
4. Sudden shifts in direction

Treatment

Treatment of ACL injuries normally involves the following:

1. Immediate medical attention along with intense first aid care

2. Sincere adherence to the R.I.C.E model of self care -

- Rest: proper rest for a couple of weeks or months depending upon the severity of the injury
- Ice: using ice packs to help cool the nerves
- Compression: ice treatment further helps in compression
- Elevation: when lying down in bed, it is strongly recommended that you keep your affected leg at a slightly higher position, through the use of pillows or cushions

3. Success rehabilitative therapy for several weeks

4. Anterior cruciate ligament surgery or reconstruction
