Diabetes And High Blood Pressure - Are They Related?

MBBS
Diabetologist, Jabalpur
Diabetes And High Blood Pressure - Are They Related?

High blood pressure or hypertension is a condition caused when the force of the blood against the arterial walls exceeds drastically than what it normally is. A blood pressure reading exceeding 140/90 over a prolonged period of time is considered to be ‘high blood pressure’ or diagnosed as ‘hypertension’.

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is characterized by extremely high levels of blood glucose (blood sugar) in the body, either due to the insufficient secretion of insulin by the pancreas or reduced sensitivity of the body to insulin. This makes your body unable to break down the sugars. At first glance, these two conditions seem completely unrelated, but, according to certain studies, the two conditions do have similar outcomes and could be inter-dependent.

The Connect-

According to the American Diabetes Association, the combination of hypertension and type 2 diabetes is particularly lethal and can significantly raise a person's risk of having a heart attack or stroke. Having type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure also increases your chances of developing other diabetes-related diseases, such as kidney disease, and retinopathy (eye blood vessels), which may cause blindness. There is substantial overlap between diabetes and hypertension, reflecting substantial overlap in their etiology and disease mechanisms. Genetic structure, Obesity, inflammation, oxidative stress, and insulin resistance are thought to be the common pathways. A prospective cohort study in the United States reported that type 2 diabetes mellitus was almost 2.5 times as likely to develop in subjects with hypertension as in subjects with normal blood pressure.

In the Hong Kong Cardiovascular Risk Factor Prevalence Study, only 42% of people with diabetes had normal blood pressure and only 56% of people with hypertension had normal glucose tolerance. There are many minor lifestyle changes that can lower your blood pressure and blood sugar. A brisk walk for 30 to 40 minutes every day, or any aerobic activity can make your heart healthier. In addition to lowering blood pressure and blood sugar, physical activity can strengthen the heart muscle and may reduce arterial stiffness. You may need minor modifications in your diet like, cutting out sugar salt, high-fat meats etc. You can take several servings of vegetables, low-fat dairy products, leans meats and fish or meat substitutes, fruits, whole (not processed) foods, whole-grain pastas, breads, and brown rice etc. While some people can improve their type 2 diabetes and hypertension with lifestyle changes, most require medication.

Depending on their overall health, some people may need more than one medication to reduce their risk. Consult your doctor to choose best possible medicines for your diabetes and / or blood pressure control.

lybrate-user, thanks for the query. Since there is no mention about blood glucose levels and HbA1c%, it is difficult to comment. People with diabetes have to take medicine for their whole life, these drugs are quite safe. They help patient live in a healthy manner. I did not understand the reason for phobia. Please do come back with the reason for that. For diabetes other than taking modern drugs there is no medicine in any other practices, even though a lot of claims are made. Thanks.

lybrate-user, Diabetes even if not in very good control is unlikely to cause an increase in menstrual cycle. It is better if you get a thyroid assay done and see if there is any problem with it. Plus it is good to consult a local gynecologist. Thanks.

My Father is suffering from High Sugar and High BP after the treatment of 2 year in this field so please suggest me how.
Once the fasting blood sugar is more then 126 mg/dl and pp blood sugar is more then 200 mg/dl, patient is diabetic and diabetes can be controlled only by medication and can't be cured. The same os with blood pressure once it crosses the prehypertensive state B.P>140/90 medicines can control it but can not revert it back to normal.

Please let me know if Honey can be used as alternative to Sugar for green tea (or any non milk based tea). I was told Honey can not be used with hot water. Is it a myth then?

Mr. lybrate-user, Warm water, lemon with honey is recommended by some as a treatment for reducing weight. As a doctor I am not able to explain how or why it works. Honey is same as either sugar or jaggery, containing sucrose, plus it is having some vitamins and antioxidants. Can be used as a substitute to sugar. Thanks.

lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. Madam the information given is very general. So it does not give any idea about blood glucose levels & HbA1c% as well as current treatment. Also there is no information on weight, height and extent of daily exercise being done. Plus information regarding BP readings, serum creatinine & urea level and lipid profile is also needed. Then present dietary pattern is also required to give any suggestions or other guidelines. Thanks.

Hello have you shown your problem to any ent surgeon because watering from ear looks unrelated to diabetes. Secondly I would like to know your fasting and after food blood sugar level plus hba1c level to guide properly. At your age it is essential to have a very tight blood sugar control, almost like a non diabetic. Please give above detail. Also I want to know your bmp and waist circumference. Plus your physical activity level. Also your lipid profile.

Hello doctor. My question is, is diabetic patient can take honey with water and lemon in the morning?

Hello doctor. My question is, is diabetic patient can take honey with water and lemon in the morning?
Plainly, yes, diabetics can have honey, but obviously in moderation. When it comes to sugar and diabetes, most people believe that anything sweet is taboo. But what you need to consider is that it is the total carbohydrates in your diet, and not the amount of sugar that matters. Honey has high glycemic index compare to white sugar so it will not immediately increase your blood sugar level. But you can use it in moderate amount only.

There has been no comparison between the two drugs till now. For all practical purposes, they are the same but sitagliptin offers the convenience of once a day dosing.
