Drink plenty of water. Apply ice cold water packs on forehead and lower abdomen. Give him one cup of spinach juice. If you can find a nurse to give an enema ask her to help.

How do we know that a patient on mechanical ventilator is breathing himself /herself.

Hmm. Good question. It will be difficult for a lay man to evaluate that. Because ventilators have different settings. If the patient is conscious and is able to cough then probably he is breathing on it's own. But I am guessing that you would like to know in case of an unconscious person on ventilator. Most patients on ventilators would be on SIMV setting. In whic h a ceratin amount of respirations are set to be given/assisted by the ventilators and rest the patient takes himself. So ask your doctor for the set respiratory rate insimv mode and count the patient's respiration yourself. For eg if your doctor says that that the set rest rate is 12 and you count the patuient's resp rate as 16 then the patient is taking atlest 4 breaths on his or her own. In assist control mode almost every braeth is assisted by rthe ventilator so it is difficult to assess by alay person. If the mode is cpap then every breath being taken is being initiated by the patient. To summarise ask you doctor the mode of ventilator setting, ACM or BIPAP or CPAP. It is difficult to tell inACMV mode. Follow the above example in SIMV mode if in CPAPmode then your patient is definitely breathing by himself. Hope it helps.

In her recent X ray reports, it indicated that there is little amount of fluid accumulated in the lungs. So she's not able to breathe properly. Why does the fluid accumulates in the lungs and what is the treatment for it? Can it be just wheezing or lung cancer?

Fluid on both sides or one side, how long and associated symtoms and any reports will decide cause and then treatment. Uni lateral effusion is mostly due to TB.

As per your concern I would suggest you to do following remedy 1. Cut, de-seed and crush 4-5 Indian gooseberries to paste 2. Press this paste on a sieve and extract the juice 3. Take 2 tsp of this Indian gooseberry juice 4. Add ½ tsp nutmeg powder 5. Mix well 6. Drink 2 times a day This is very helpful Your problem is permanently cure by ayurvedic treatment.

Have lost 20 kgs in 20 months with control on sweet, fat and outside food consumption besides regular exercising. Kindly suggest ways to reduce fat from lower belly. It's good to reduce weight at right time as many problems are directly related to overweight. Management: 1.Take 1 glass of Luke warm water with lemon juice and honey in the morning daily. 2.Drink at least 2 litters per day. Lukewarm water is best for drinking. 3.Avoid cold drinks and alcoholic drink like beer as they contain more calories. 4.Don't skip meals. Avoid heavy meals. Take light meals. 5.Must have 3 main meals per day – In between main meals take fruits & green salads. 6.Eat seasonal fruits & Fresh vegetables. Fruits and vegetables contain fibres to help you feel full quickly. 7.Avoid sweets, oily, spicy, junk food, chocolates. 8.Eat more whole grains and cut carbohydrates. Choose proteins instead of fatty ones. 9.Cut salt from your diet. 10.Eat home foods. Going out to eat makes it too easy to cheat. Food sold at restaurants is commonly much higher in fat, sodium, and other weight-loss killers. 11.Avoid sedentary and lazy lifestyle. 12.Take small frequent breaks for a quick walk in between as sitting for long hours together encourages the accumulation of fat in the body. 13.Do regular exercises daily. Exercise decreases the stress hormone in your body, burns calories and also increases the blood circulation. Brisk walking for 15-30 minutes daily is good. Jogging, running, swimming & cycling are good options.

Greying of hair increases with nutritional deficiencies. So, make sure to have plenty of milk, milk products, fish, jaggery, spinach, lettuce, wheat, meat. Have calcium and iron supplements. You need to get evaluation for autoimmune diseases. Don't use dyes, bleaches, steam or blowdryers. Avoid spa. You can to start with use brown henna. Avoid swimming in pools. Drink milk and plenty of dairy products to replenish calcium needed for tyrosinase. Include cabbage, broccoli, brussels, kale in daily diet. Have vitamin and mineral supplements. Have spinach and jaggery, iron in it vil enhance melanin forming pathway. Stay away from hairdyes, dryers, spas, bleaches and hot irons. You can use brown natural henna to cover your greys.

There are several things you can do to prevent a cold—they are all easy and inexpensive and worth the effort. Wash your hands often-with soap and warm water.The germs stick to the soap and get washed down the drain. Always wash your hands after coughing or sneezing into your hands, blowing your nose, after touching someone who is sick, or when using public restrooms or telephones. Cover Your Mouth and Nose When You Sneeze or Cough- Clean your hands every time you cough or sneeze. Avoid Touching Your Eyes, Nose, or Mouth-Germs are often spread when a person touches a contaminated surface and then touches their eyes, nose, or mouth. Stay Home When You’re Sick-Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, don’t smoke, manage stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food so you can fend off viruses. Take healthy balanced diet...like boiled eggs.daily in breakfast .. Avoid people who have a cold or cold symptoms. Routinely clean and disinfect common areas of your home. Treatment:There is a gradual 1-3 day onset of symptoms. It often starts out as a sore throat, then a fever and coughing. As the cold progresses, the nasal mucus may thicken which is the last stage before the cold dries up. A cold usually lasts for a week or two. But, taking good care of yourself at home can relieve symptoms and help prevent complications if you are otherwise healthy. Unless you develop complications, you shouldn’t need medical treatment. Complications include bacterial infections of the ears, throat, sinuses or lungs which must be treated with antibiotics. In general you should: • get plenty of rest so your body can use its energy to fight the cold • staying at home will keep you from spreading germs • drink plenty of liquids like herbal tea or hot broth/vegetable/tomato soups. Avoid foods or drinks with caffeine which can keep you from getting enough sleep Runny Nose and Sneezing- if you have post nasal drip, gargle to keep from getting a sore throat. Drink extra fluids. (avoid sugary and high calorie drinks) Use saline nasal sprays or nasal irrigation • Tablet Nasorest-P once/twice daily may reduce the amount of mucous. • Humidify the rooms you are in most or your whole house if possible. • Do steam inhalation once or twice daily Cough-Coughing is how your body gets rid of debris and mucus from the airways during a viral infection. Unless your cough is severe or is keeping you from resting at night, it is better not to treat it. A severe cough can be treated with a cough syp, but don’t try to completely stop the cough. There are two types of coughs. Productive and non-productive or dry cough. Non-productive, dry cough. A dry, hacking cough may develop near the end of a cold. Dry coughs that follow viral colds are often worse at night and can last up to several weeks. Take syrup Alex-D for a dry cough. Cough drops can sooth an irritated throat, but most don’t affect the cough. Productive cough. A productive cough is one that brings up mucus from the back of the throat or the lungs. Productive coughs should not be suppressed to the point they no longer bring up mucus. Use syrup Alex. Drink lots of water if you have a productive cough. Head and Body Aches- Take tablet dolo-650 mg for fever once or twice daily

Dear lybrate-user, It is nice of you to help your mom when she is not well. It is better that she goes back to the same psychiatrist who prescribed these drugs for the last 7 years. He would have assessed the dose, the effect's limit and side effects. Your mother also got relief and confidence with these drugs. I don't know what she is suffering from now. During menopause, the depression and its treatment needs a change. At times a gynaecologist also need to be consulted. However you take her to a psychiatrist nearby, so that she can visit her/him frequently to adjust the dose.

I am the 22 years old guy, I have three disturbing problems which depressed me badly: An average student not able to bring good marks to proud my parents about myself, which make me sad and depressed as my parents investing money to my education. Secondly, since my father’s death I feel low about myself as what to do in future, I feel like sky is crashing on me, family pressure, the more I fight the more I shatters, for my father I did not do anything, thirdly I am in love with someone but she dnt loves me, I tried to show her but she dnt try to understand my feelings. She loves somebody else. First time I loved someone. I fight with her but she don’t understand my feelings. All these feelings strangles me and I can’t control them and these shatters me totally. I don’t get sleep for all these things sometimes. I don’t like to eat. But my father’s death hits me strongly as I pains me so much. Sometimes I feel I have nowhere to go. Sometimes I feel why god took him why not me as I feel worthless since my childhood. Feels I am walking in dark. Nobody is there for me. What to do? How to control these feelings before it will late to be better?

You may be going into aa self-pity mode and this will ruin all your hopes and aspirations. If your father is dead and you want to be grateful for all the money that is spent, then you will work harder and do everything well. But by pitying yourself you can go on messing up your life and become useless in the end. If you are genuine you will really do all that you ought to do and come out with flying colors. If you father dies when you were a teen I could see the severity of the loss. "Even so for his sake and yours you must push yourself to do better than others. Having a girlfriend in the middle of all this is also bad planning. Which girl will want to be with you if you do not do well in life? Again if you are serious about a girl, show your worth and prove that you are deserving of this girl. In my opinion, you have chosen the wrong girl, in the sense that she is already seeing another boy. In your place, I would determine to look fit, study well and develop good character. In these developments, you will not only be a success but you will be an attractive proposition for any suitable girl! So get up early and go for regular exercise, eat well and healthily, sleep well and be responsible with your academic pursuits.
