Dear Lybrate User, Increasing weight does not mean that you will go fatty. In fact, extra fat serves as a precursor of many diseases. In order to increase your weight as well as stay healthy you have to increase the muscle mass of your body. Normally a muscle undergoes an increase in size when it gets hypertrophied due to weight training. Weight-training leads to the pumping of blood to the muscle resulting in increased protein synthesis in the muscles. This applies to every muscles of human body. So, weight training is a must to increase weight. Whenever a muscle gets hypertrophied it demands protein to expand. Here comes the need of protein supplement. The most effective protein supplement is WHEY protein. But kindly remember only taking supplement is not enough. You need to take those supplements according to a fixed schedule. For quicker & better results take 40 grams of whey just after waking from sleep at morning. Take another 20 grams of whey just 30 minutes before workout. Again take 40 grams of whey just after you have finished your workout. Kindly remember gaining weight is a time -taking process. So do not expect any result within fortnight.

From last year I am suffering from chronic urticaria some doctor says I m allergic to light some says hormonal imbalance some says its cosmetic induce allergy I got my all test done like cbc whole liver profile hormonal test thyroid test and all my tests are normal. I have irregular itching on hand face and leg. My rashes dont go away even if there is no itching. I had anti allergy tablets light steroids and hormonal tablets but nothing has given desired result till date.

Dear patient, allergy in itself signify that your immune system is not balanced. There is no other reason for urticaria like hormonal imbalance. Allergy may be to many things ranging from light, cosmetics, to food products, stress and lot more. To know the allergy causing agents you can undergo allergy test which costs nearly rs. 5000 but in that you can know that things affecting you which you may try to avoid at that time. Dear patient, a proper measure for knowing and managing your diabetes will be to ensure a hba1c below 6.5%. Regarding diet, we indians have high carbohydrate diet. You have to closely observe your plate and you can come up with a better diet plan for yourself or your mother. To simplify it, identify the items which are carb rich in your plate and try to compensate the same with protein and fibres, for eg cut down a roti and increase sabji, dal or salad. To have a better control you can do a monthly self glucose monitoring 3 times a day and keep a track of the food with it. Check fasting sugar, sugar one hour prior to lunch and 2 hrs post lunch, and note down the details of her breakfast and lunch items. Modify as per my earlier suggestions and within a week you will see your blood sugar level responding. Best of luck.

Hi… apply mixture of onion and lemon juice on the scalp, @take 200 ml of fresh buttermilk after meals, @take 30-40 black currants and 1 tsf of jaggery during meals, @take fresh juice of beet or pomegranate in morning instead of breakfast, @take 1 tsf of lavanbhaskar churna after meals @use vatajatadi taila and rootz shampoo, do all these things for 30 days…it gives you good result…thanks.

My mother is about 85 years old and totally immobilized. She takes Acitrom 2mg and 1 mg alternative day. She has DVT in both leg. Now recent threat on bedsore on her back near spinal chord. Any infection will increase PT INR ratio. Last week she had a bleeding in mouth and PT INR was 9. Now after hospitalization with FFB about 5 units her PT INR comes to 2.5. Pl. Advise why sudden increase in PT INR to 9.

According to her age. Its because of her aging process. Though how much you try, there will be some or the other problem going to arise. What you need to do is just to stabilize her vitals and maintain all ailments. And for bed sore, please keep on doing dressing twice in a day and make her position change every 2 hourly.

Hi saurabh, since how long have you been on betacap tr 40? have you been suffering from constipation even before you started on betacap tr 40? it would have helped me suitably answer in particular had I had all the information in detail. Nevertheless, I would advise you to consult with your physician on this asap as your constipation could very well be a side effect of your current bp medication. Usually lactulose solutions like duphalac help clear off stubborn constipation as yours but I would prefer your consulting physician evaluate you clinically and prescribe as appropriate. Usually, however, constipation is caused owing to a faulty diet and irregular lifestyle. A couple of generic steps that you may take are as follows: (a) eat a simple and natural diet consisting of whole grain cereals, green leafy vegetables and fruits/ dry fruits e. G mango, grapes, papaya, tomato, pears, guava, gooseberry, fig, raisins et al as suitable. Make sure to chew your food properly and avoid drinking water in between. Although, fibre rich foods are usually recommended, please note that fibrous diet sometimes complicate the problem and especially in your case it is better that you avoid difficult to digest fibrous foods for sometime till the acute phase is over. (b) eat less of fatty, oily and strong foods. Restrict tea, coffee and sugary foods including carbonated beverages. (c) drink at least 6 - 8 glasses of water unless advised otherwise by your doc. (d) exercise daily - walking outside, in fresh air, is the best exercise. Its also the safest provided you are not having any joint problems or other health restrictions et al. In case you have a sedentary job, make sure you take regular breaks and walk around a little each time before getting back to work again. (f) daily abdominal massage/ exercises also help tone up the abdominal muscles that aid in emptying the bowels. Although, you can safely do the same yourself, I would advise you take help of a massage therapist to initially train yourself on the process and then you may practice it yourself. (g) after the meals/ dinner, one may try sitting in vajrasana for a couple of minutes. This aids in digestion, and in turn helps overcome constipation too. (h) avoid frequent use of purgatives/ laxatives unless advised by your family doc. (i) reduce mental stress and strain as much as possible. Practicing yoga & meditation would help you stay relaxed and focused. Hope this helps. Should your issue not resolve still, I would advise you to meet a competent gi specialist at the earliest and seek his/ her's opinion on this. Bbsr.

Hair hair fall could b significant or just physiological without any systemic involvement. Firstly, don't stress over it. Meditate. Practice yoga. Relax yourself. Stress vil increase your hairfall. Drink two litres of water. Eat plenty of pulses, meat, fish and milk. Avoid hair cosmetics. Wash hair twice or thrice a week. Shampoo should be done to wash dirt, dust and grime and not for anything else. Don't use dyes, bleaches or straighteners. Massage scalp to improve circulation. After a bath, don't blow dry your hair instead naturally dry hair. If any scalp infection, get it treated. Any allergy should be taken care of. 1. Tab biotin daily for 1 month 2. Tab fe (if your fe level is reeduce) 3. Scalp massage with antioxidant oil

Causes of knee pain
1. Acute knee pain

Sudden knee pain is usually due to an injury, the common ones being:
Tendon injuries: tendons attach muscle to bone, and are prone to injury, especially in athletes. Sudden rupture partial or complete will cause pain, and prevent normal movement of the joint. More commonly, inflammation sets in, especially in the quadriceps and patellar tendons (tendonitis)

Ligament injuries: the knee has two ligaments inside the joint and two outside, connecting the femur and tibia, and stabilising the joint. Tearing any of the these ligaments often results from contact sports, or a heavy fall, and causes immediate pain, which is worse on walking or bending the knee. Damage to the internal ligaments may cause the knee to give way when weight is put on the leg.

Meniscus injuries: the meniscus is a cartilage cushion inside the joint. A tear of the meniscus can cause pain, worsening over 24 to 48 hours. The tear may lift a piece of the cartilage off which then flaps between the knee bones (like a bucket-handle) this can cause locking of the joint, preventing full straightening of the leg. Alternatively, a piece of the meniscus can break off, and move around in the joint space, interfering with normal movement. Old or repeated injuries can lead to degeneration of the meniscus.

Dislocation: this commonly affects the kneecap, and is easily seen. Dislocation may become a recurrent problem.

Gout: although this is a chronic underlying disorder, an attack of gout occurs suddenly, causing intense pain and swelling which can last up to two weeks, then clear, leaving normal joint movement.

Bursitis: this is inflammation of the fluid-filled sacs outside the joint, over which the tendons slide. Commonly the bursa at the front of the knee (pre-patellar bursa) is affected, causing pain when kneeling.

Ilio-tibial band: athletes, especially runners, are prone to this disorder, in which the ligament from the hip bone to the tibia is tight, and chafes against the outer femur

Osgood-schlatter disease is an overuse problem found mainly in athletic teenagers, and can affect one or both knees.

Septic arthritis can follow an injury. In addition to pain, the patient will be ill and feverish.

2. Chronic knee pain

This is often due to a previous injury, but is associated with several underlying medical conditions.

Osteoarthritis is the commonest type. It is an age-related condition, sometimes called wear and tear arthritis, and is caused by gradual degeneration of the joint cartilage. The pain varies from day to day, is often worse in the mornings, and eventually leads to a stiff joint.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a destructive auto-immune disease, often involving both knee joints. Acute flare-ups alternate with quiescent periods. Pain, stiffness & swelling eventually lead to loss of mobility and a destroyed, deformed joint.

Chondromalacia patellae describes a condition of pain under the kneecap, due to mild arthritis of the patella. It is common in young women. Pain is worse after sitting, or with rising from the chair or going up stairs, and patients report a sensation of grating under the kneecap.

Tumours: malignant tumours of bone (like osteogenic sarcoma) can cause pain and swelling near the knee. This must be excluded in a young patient who has no history of sport injury or any underlying medical condition.

How does metabolism work in summer, rainy and winter from appetite point of view for human point of view for people aged 50+? What can we do to enhance it? Can drinking a lot of water be problematic? In summer only, based on how much one perspires?

In winter season metabolism is more as body has to produce more heat to maintain temperature, so appetite is more. In summer you may feel less hungry for the same reason. You can increase appetite by taking vitamin tonics as well as certain specific medicines prescribed by doctors. Drinking good amount of water is good especially in summer when you sweat a lot.
