Sir I am 66 yrs old. When I get cold, the throat sour & cough are severe and continues for days (frequent cough disturbing sleep also)

AUTLS, CCEDM, MD - Internal Medicine, MBBS
General Physician, Faridabad
Sir I am 66 yrs old. When I get cold, the throat sour & cough are severe and continues for days (frequent cough d...
There are several things you can do to prevent a cold—they are all easy and inexpensive and worth the effort. Wash your hands often-with soap and warm water. The germs stick to the soap and get washed down the drain. Always wash your hands after coughing or sneezing into your hands, blowing your nose, after touching someone who is sick, or when using public restrooms or telephones. Cover Your Mouth and Nose When You Sneeze or Cough- Clean your hands every time you cough or sneeze. Avoid Touching Your Eyes, Nose, or Mouth-Germs are often spread when a person touches a contaminated surface and then touches their eyes, nose, or mouth. Stay Home When You’re Sick-Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, don’t smoke, manage stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food so you can fend off viruses. Take healthy balanced diet...like boiled eggs.daily in breakfast .. Avoid people who have a cold or cold symptoms. Routinely clean and disinfect common areas of your home. Treatment:There is a gradual 1-3 day onset of symptoms. It often starts out as a sore throat, then a fever and coughing. As the cold progresses, the nasal mucus may thicken which is the last stage before the cold dries up. A cold usually lasts for a week or two. But, taking good care of yourself at home can relieve symptoms and help prevent complications if you are otherwise healthy. Unless you develop complications, you shouldn’t need medical treatment. Complications include bacterial infections of the ears, throat, sinuses or lungs which must be treated with antibiotics. In general you should: • get plenty of rest so your body can use its energy to fight the cold • staying at home will keep you from spreading germs • drink plenty of liquids like herbal tea or hot broth/vegetable/tomato soups. Avoid foods or drinks with caffeine which can keep you from getting enough sleep Runny Nose and Sneezing- if you have post nasal drip, gargle to keep from getting a sore throat. Drink extra fluids. (avoid sugary and high calorie drinks) Use saline nasal sprays or nasal irrigation • Tablet Nasorest-P once/twice daily may reduce the amount of mucous. • Humidify the rooms you are in most or your whole house if possible. Cough-Coughing is how your body gets rid of debris and mucus from the airways during a viral infection. Unless your cough is severe or is keeping you from resting at night, it is better not to treat it. A severe cough can be treated with a cough syp, but don’t try to completely stop the cough. There are two types of coughs. Productive and non-productive or dry cough. Non-productive, dry cough. A dry, hacking cough may develop near the end of a cold. Dry coughs that follow viral colds are often worse at night and can last up to several weeks. Take syrup Alex-D for a dry cough. Cough drops can sooth an irritated throat, but most don’t affect the cough. Productive cough. A productive cough is one that brings up mucus from the back of the throat or the lungs. Productive coughs should not be suppressed to the point they no longer bring up mucus. Use syrup Alex. Drink lots of water if you have a productive cough. Head and Body Aches- Take tablet dolo-650 mg for fever once or twice daily

I m suffering from head-ache continuously, is that symptoms of any disease or not? please answer.
Headache can be due to multiple reasons. High blood pressure/ problems of near or distant vision. Not using spectacles/ change required in glasses power. Nose/ ear / throat infection/ sinus infection/tooth infection. Some time there can be brain tumour. For treatment of specific cause of disease, consult your doctor. However rest/ steam inhalation/ applying balm on fore head/ tea /coffee may help.

I was prescribed Insulin Nova Rapid 18-0-0 in a day, now my medical specialist not recommended that and prescribed Jardiance-10 mg (Empagiflozhin Tablets). I have few insulin injection cartridges left with me, shall I continue insulin (till all insulin cartridges over) along with Jardiance. Is it correct? Or will it have some side effect? Or shall follow medical specialist advice? Two. When I urinate, white foam is seen? What is the symptom? Some make me fear that kidney is affected, and some say protein is higher side. What is your opinion and advice?

Either you take nova rapid or jardiance because both decreases blood sugar. Yes with nova rapid sugar was not controlled then you can take both simultaneouly. No problem. We can decrease dose of nova rapid accordingly. Regarding foam in urine better you go for urine complete analysis. Then tell the reports. Most probably phosphates are passing in urine. You can ask on line.

Simple things you can do yourself to help prevent piles

Master in Psychology, MD - Ayurveda, Dems, Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine and Surgery (BAMS)
Ayurveda,
In the majority of cases, piles resolve on their own without the need for any treatment. Treatments can help significantly reduce the discomfort and itching that many patients experience.

A good doctor will initially recommend some lifestyle changes.

Diet -
Piles can be caused by too much straining when doing bowel movements, which is the result of constipation. A change in diet can help keep the stools regular and soft. This involves eating more fiber, such as fruit and vegetables, or switching your cereal breakfast to bran.

Water
Water is the best drink, and the patient may be advised to increase his/her water consumption. Some experts say too much caffeine is not good.

Body weight -
If the patient is obese, losing weight may help reduce the incidence and severity of hemorrhoids.

Simple things you can do yourself to help prevent piles:

Try not to strain when you go to the toilet
Avoid laxatives
Exercise.

Ointments, creams, pads and other otc medications - there are some over-the-counter (otc) medications which help soothe the redness and swelling around the anus area. Some of them contain witch hazel, hydrocortisone, or some other active ingredient which can relieve symptoms of itching and pain.

It is important to remember that they do not cure piles, they only treat the symptoms. Do not use them for more than seven consecutive days - longer periods may irritate the anus area and cause skin thinning. Unless advised to by your doctor, do not use two or more medications simultaneously.

Corticosteroids - these can reduce inflammation and pain.

Painkillers - ask your pharmacist for suitable painkilling medications, such as acetaminophen (tylenol).

Laxatives - the doctor may prescribe one if the patient suffers from constipation.

Banding - the doctor places an elastic band around the base of the pile inside the anus, cutting off its blood supply. After a few days the hemorrhoids fall off. This can work for grades 2 and 3 hemorrhoids.

Sclerotherapy - a medicine is injected to make the hemorrhoid shrink - the hemorrhoid eventually shrivels up. This is effective for grades 2 and 3 hemorrhoids, and is a useful alternative to banding.

Infrared coagulation - also referred to as infrared light coagulation. Used for grades 1 or 2 hemorrhoids. A device burns the hemorrhoid tissue.

Surgery - used for particularly large piles, or grades 3 or 4 hemorrhoids. Generally, surgery is used if other procedures were not effective. Sometimes surgery is done on an outpatient basis - the patient goes home after the procedure.

Hemorrhoidectomy - the excess tissue that is causing the bleeding is surgically removed. This can be done in various ways. It may involve a combination of a local anesthetic and sedation, a spinal anesthetic, or a general anesthetic. This type of surgery is the most effective in completely removing piles, but there is a risk of complications, which can include difficulties passing stools, as well as urinary tract infections.
Hemorrhoid stapling - blood flow is blocked to the tissue of the hemorrhoid. This procedure is usually less painful than hemorrhoidectomy. However, there is a greater risk of hemorrhoid recurrence and rectal prolapse (part of the rectum pushes out of the anus).
Complications linked to piles
Anemia - hemorrhoids can sometimes cause long-term blood loss, which may lead to anemia.

Stangulated hemorrhoid - the blood supply to an internal hemorrhoid is cut off, causing severe pain, and even gangrene (death of tissue).

Hi my friend is suffering from hypoglycaemia and he's non diabetic. Doc suggested with insulin antibody serum test. What is this test for? The report showed 20U/ml What did this reading mean?

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
The anti-insulin antibody test checks to see if your body has produced antibodies against insulin. Normally, there are no antibodies against insulin in your blood. Normal value ranges may vary slightly among different laboratories.

Hello- Excessive practice of squeeze technique to delay ejaculation can result in obstructive urinary pathology. It other words it can affect your urinary function, and can cause urine retention, as the technique can rupture the continuity of the penile urethra. Its better to perform the exercise under proper guidance and give sufficient rest between two sessions.

What is the best way to cure acidity? Please tell me an answer which will exclude the use of drug.
Here are some home remedies to cure acidity.  - Skip the aerated drinks as well as the caffeine. Opt for herbal tea instead.  - Have a glass of lukewarm water everyday.  - Include banana, watermelon and cucumber in your daily diet. Watermelon juice is great for curing acidity.  - Nariyal paani is known to soothe the system if you suffer from acidity.  - Drink a glass of milk - everyday.  - Have your last meal at least two to three hours before you hit the sack.  - Keeping long intervals between meals is another cause for acidity. Have small but regular meals.  - Try to avoid pickles, spicy chutneys, vinegar, etc.  - Boil some mint leaves in water and have a glass of this after meals.
