I smoke weed regularly, 3-4 blunts a day. But I don't drink at all. How can it affect me? On the positive side I go to the gym daily.

Psychiatrist, Hyderabad
If you are an occasional smoker - with public messages, health awareness programs and your own doctors advice, you can quit. If you are a regular smoker, motivational therapy with a trained psychotherapist or a psychiatrist and enormous will power will help you quit. If you are a diseased smoker, consult a de addiction psychiatrist at the earliest. He may give you anti-smoking medications and de addiction treatment.

Tips for Healing a Broken Heart

1. Go through – don’t hide from - the experience. You need to fully experience all the negative emotions before the healing process can begin.

2. Allow yourself to wallow in your independence. Don’t rush into a new relationship. You don’t need another person to make you feel complete. You’re enough in yourself. You are NOT inadequate.

3. Make a list of your strengths. It’s important that you focus on your good qualities as a broken heart can cause our self-esteem to plummet. Make a note of your successes and accomplishments. They didn’t disappear with the relationship!

4. Don’t try to suppress all the memories you have. Allow yourself some time to go over one or two … But don’t pitch your tent there - as the future’s now your focus.

5. Reach out to others who are suffering. You’re not the only person who is having a hard time (although you often feel you are when you’re broken-hearted) … and comforting another will distract you from your pain.

6. Allow yourself to laugh, and allow yourself to cry. Both of these are healing, and can bring release. They can help us feel more “normal”, and can bring a sense of peace.

7. Make a “good and bad list”. Make a list of all the things that you need to stop doing, to try and put some distance between you and them. For example, if you’re always checking their stuff on facebook then you’ll likely find it is harder to get them out mind. Alternatively, going out for a jog or meeting up with a friend can help to lift your spirits, and to change the way you feel.

8. Hang onto your hope. When a relationship ends (or if our love is unrequited) we can feel that life is pointless as there’s nothing good ahead. But the future is still open – and there’s definitely hope … And one day you will notice that you’re smiling naturally.

My son doesnot concentarte while studying and that is why do not remember studies. Otherwise he is active and remember each minute things.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
Yes, his problem could be about concentration but let us not assume that he is not intelligent. That might be a huge fallacy: sometimes children who are too intelligent cannot concentrate because the material may be too boring or too mundane for his level. You may check his iq by testing and see if that is true. It is also possible that he is over active and might need more engaging things and activities around him. So you could give him supplementary work at home that is both challenging and interesting. He could also be given a lot of exercise to do by the play way method like, cycling, football, basketball, kids? games that involve running around etc. When he is exhausted he will be more amenable to concentrate. Do not feed him high energy foods. His father? s involvement will go a long way to mitigate these difficulties. In fact he may need a lot of attention, especially of the physical kind to be more balanced. Don't focus too much on his academic skills but on his overall development.

Feeling depressed, sad and disinterested in surroundings and bursting into tears (emotional sensitivity) suggests a depressive disorder which definitely needs urgent evaluation and treatment. Consult me online or a psychiatrist in your vicinity for help and treatment.

You cannot change your height anymore, period. But you certainly need to change your friends and come out of their negative influences. There is a famous saying, 'Tell me the friends you keep, and I will tell you who you are' This is the influence your companions have on you. Without their influence, you can be more and more the person you want to be. In the meantime, attend a personality development course, personal grooming course, public speaking course etc. And work at developing your personality. Life is extremely precious and if people hurt themselves for their defects, then all of us should be bruised badly.

How can we manage stress? I dont usually take stress easily but once it gets too much I turn out to be an outburst of wrath I am 18 and am a student I just feel headaches eye aches and I feel I cannot breathe once I lose my patience. Please help me get my anger down and help myself be calm even at the hardest moments. Thank you

Psychologist,
You need to attend anger management sessions with a counsellor. Anger is a healthy emotion as it helps yo to know that your needs and expectations are not being met, someone is misusing you or you are getting hurt. Yet if you resort to anger too often and get abusive, then it can become difficult as it will start affecting your relationships. Teens have been known for their anger as they are at the threshold of discovering themselves and establishing an identity for themselves in the world. They are also idealistic in nature and emotionally sway from one extreme to the other. Often they find the world an oppressive place, where people tell a bunch of lies and are often fake. Please meet a counsellor in your city to help you come out of this situation and develop a more realistic view of self and the world.

One of my family member is addicted with smoking and is unable to relax. How can he quit smoking?

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
You have to quit cold turkey because the body and mind will torture you endlessly while attempting reduction in smoking. The tobacco tar in cigarette smoke lines your lung with huge patches that make that portion dysfunctional. Your oxygen carrying capacity is jeopardized, and breathing is impinged. But don’t be discouraged because it is not too late even now to reverse all the ill-effects of smoking. I don’t know what other organs could be damaged but do go for a thorough medical check up to assess the effects of your abuse. Regarding improving your lungs, do a lot of aerobic exercise breathing through your nostrils only. Then there are a lot of deep breathing exercises in Yoga which you can learn too. Deep breathing cleanses your system and lungs and restores it to good health. Deep breathing uses the 80% of the lungs which are not normally used in normal breathing and even when exerting yourself. The greatest effect is in the lungs because this substance is processed through the respiratory system directly through the lung surface. When quitting, you must take one day at a time; though you must give up all smoking at once, and promptly. If you look too far ahead you will get discouraged and will give up. If you sit and count the number of days you have given up, that will also focus too much on achievement. You must focus on the here and now, on that day to be precise. After all quitting is not that easy due to many factors. So even if you fail one day, you must try and try again. Very few people succeed in their first attempt. Your persistence will eventually pay off. The urge to discontinue is hampered by many factors but the worst of them is the conditioning. In fact these conditions can exist all through the day unlike other addictions. But your desire to want to stop is the most important factor. It is important to find out about the ill-effects of smoking to have a reason that alarms you about continuing in the habit. The information is really scary but true and you must remind yourself about this every day. The nicotine in tobacco smoke stimulates the heart beat to raise the blood pressure in no time at all. So you must avoid it like the plague: it is just very bad medicine for you. In fact it is highly toxic too. You will need to stop smoking or consuming any tobacco related items with immediate effect. You should start vigorous exercises, gradually increasing it over a period of time. Do deep breathing exercises every time you feel like smoking (try Yoga), and replace the oral urge with some healthy food substitute to satiate the need. You may also take hard candy or chewing gum. If the urge is too strong, then use nicotine gums and nicotine patches, for a little while until the smoking drive reduces, substantially. You may also join Smokers Anonymous in your city where the support is really extraordinary for like-minded people who are also in the same situation. Keep yourself occupied or engaged with interesting activities during the times when it is most tempting. Keep the company of non-smokers for some time i.e. at least for the first 21 days. Above all announce it to everyone that you have quit smoking. Here’s a piece of very good advice: even if you accidentally/willfully take a cigarette, it is not the end of the world – you can start the cessation all over again. You must persevere with the best support until you defeat this addiction. Counseling is very useful in the initial stages and when temptations are at their highest.

I want to get rid of smoking what should I do for it please suggest medicines for it.

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
Only by using strong will power and avoiding all situations where you feel like smoking, chewing tobacco or drinking or using drugs avoiding friends who smoke and diverting mind by reading or chewing a gum, like NICORETTE and taking a walk when you crave for a smoke can all help. You can chew Nicorette gum which is nicotine replacement. There are medicines available. Which can be prescribed if asked personally Cigarette smoking is a leading preventable cause of mortality. It kills more than 60 lakh people worldwide every year. More than 50% of regular smokers would invariably die from tobacco-related illnesses which includes heart attack, cancer or asthmatic lung diseases. Best age to stop smoking is before 40 31st May is “World No Tobacco Day” Quitting smoking before the age of 40 is associated with larger decline in premature death than stopping it at a later date. Best age therefore to stop smoking is before 40. However, stopping smoking even after the age of 50 is still associated with lower risk of death as compared to those who continue to smoke. Even in smokers aged 80 years or more, quitting smoking appears to reduce some mortality.

Once in a month is ok...but why to do once in a month also.. Better not to go for it... When we know that "Hot iron will burn us when we touch we, why to show our stupidity to touch it....?" Better don't go for it... Take care... :)
