I m using specs for more than 12 years. Now I want to get contact lenses. That will be good for me.
Contact lens requires a lot of care and are expensive stuff. Moreover you must have to be very careful in placing and taking out contact lens from eyes. For those person who are into field jobs or drive 2 wheelers, contact lens are not recommended as dust particles can damage lens thus damaging eyes. But now a days contact lens is a common practise and if you can handle it with care then you can opt for lenses but always wear good quality daily wear disposable contact lenss of a good company like PURE VISION.

Doctor has recommended glasses for my 5-year old daughter. Will it be right get her glasses in such a small age. Can eye sight improve naturally as age grows?

Doctor has recommended glasses for my 5-year old daughter. Will it be right get her glasses in such a small age. Can ...
Hello. If the doctor has recommended glasses for your daughter, it would be a good idea to get her glasses. The reason being that the age range between birth to 12 years is the prime period for the development of the eyes. Any child in this range having glasses should be made to wear glasses and an eye checkup should be done at least every 6 months (if not advised otherwise). If glasses are not worn as recommended, there are chances of developing amblyopia (lazy eye). This entity means that the vision potential of the eye is reduced permanently. The glasses use should be recommended during school, homework, etc. But need not be worn throughout the day. Also, a good idea would be to encourage proper postural maintenance while doing homework, watching television, computer screen or the mobile phone. The distance of viewing should not be excessively close. Similarly, prolonged periods of staring at the television/ computer screen should be strictly discouraged. The power of the glasses may change with age (not necessarily improve). This would only be possible to say with time. It has been seen in certain children that glasses power reduces with age but that depends totally upon the type of eye refractive error and genetic factors. In case you require further suggestions, feel free to communicate over the video facility offered via lybrate. Hope my suggestions helped you. Take care-

I am a student and I use pho ne a lot. My eye sight has become very weak. Please help me.

I am a student and I use pho ne a lot. My eye sight has become very weak. Please help me.
Mobile screen is made up of hundreds of tiny pixels that are constantly moving. Our eyes in turn are not naturally able to set focus on these constantly moving pixels, and hence we try to focus on an area behind the actual screen. Therefore, in order to work on a mobile, our eyes need to keep on fluctuating focus between their natural point of focus and the pixels on the screen. And this tires the eyes and causes a lot of wear and tear.As a result, we suffer from irritation, which may range from a number of things like headaches, dry eyes, blurred vision, problems in focusing and faulty color perception, to something as severe as glaucoma. The electromagnetic waves that are emitted by a mobile phone can be extremely damaging to the eyes. It has been studied and well documented that these cell phone waves can have a damaging effect on the various parts of the eye, including the retina and the cornea. Moreover, they can cause cataract too. Moreover it is more distressing for our eyes to view contents on a tiny screen which requires even more concentration and extenive usage of eyes without blinking thus causing Eye dryness making them vulnerable to frequent Eye problemss. . The solution for this problem I its reduced usage and while uing mobiles use them inproper light. There is nothing more effective than controlling usage to reduce and negate the effects. You can also reduce the intensity of the mobile’s screen by attaching a filter or by getting an eye-friendly screen. Above all, one must try to reduce the amount of mobile usage or take frequent breaks.

Hello ma'am. If before the stroke he was fine. The vision problem can also be due to the brain problem he is having. Is Your Vision Blurry? What Should You Do?

Cornea Cataract & Lasik
Ophthalmologist, Delhi
Is Your Vision Blurry? What Should You Do?

Blurred vision is most often a sign that you need corrective spectacles for near sightedness, far sightedness or astigmatism but it could also be a sign of a bigger problem including eye diseases or neurological problems. Blurred vision involves the loss of sharpness of vision and objects appearing hazy and out of focus. It can affect one eye or both eyes simultaneously.

Whatever be your age, it is a good idea to consult a doctor as you begin to experience a blurred vision. To measure the extent of your vision problem, a doctor will do a comprehensive eye examination including spatial contrast sensitivity and a standard eye chart test.

Some of the factors that trigger blurred vision are:

  1. Myopia or nearsightedness
  2. Hypermetropia or farsightedness
  3. Astigmatism caused by an irregularly shaped cornea
  4. Presbyopia - the diminished ability to focus on objects due to the hardening of the lens in the eye
  5. Dry eyes or the lack of lubrication on the surface of the eyes
  6. Hormonal changes during pregnancy
  7. Migraine headaches
  8. Temporary floaters in the eye formed by the liquefying of the gel in the eyes
  9. After effects of Lasik surgery
  10. Eye drops or medication
  11. Overuse of contact lenses
  12. Diabetes

Blurred vision can also be a symptom of a serious condition such as cataract, glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and cardiovascular diseases.

Treatment for blurred vision depends on the factors triggering it. Wearing corrective glasses can cure blurred vision caused by myopia, hypermetropia and astigmatism. These conditions can also be treated by Lasik surgery. For blurred vision related to diabetes, check your blood sugar and get it into its optimal range.

Exercises for the eye muscles can also help sharpen vision and lower the rate of eye muscle degeneration. Some of these exercises are:

  1. Alternately focus on an object close to you and another far from you for ten seconds each.
  2. Blink your eyes and hold for two seconds
  3. Roll your eyes clockwise and anticlockwise. Repeat 15-20 times.
  4. Rub your palms together to generate heat and place over your eyes to relax them.

A healthy diet with plenty of vitamin A can help keep your eyes healthy and prevent blurring of vision. Wearing sunglasses can also protect your eyes from harmful UV radiation and lower their rate of wear and tear. Lastly avoid reading in moving vehicles and holding a book too close to your face.

If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor and ask a free question.

I am suffering from myopia How can I get my eyes back without myopia. Without surgery is it possible?

FICO, DNB Ophtalmology

I am suffering from myopia
How can I get my eyes back without myopia. Without surgery is it possible?
Hello lybrate-user. Myopia or" short sighted-ness" means the inability to see distant objects clearly. People with myopia have minus numbers as their refraction. It is determined by several factors such as genetic and hereditary factors, postural factors, systemic co-morbidity, diet, etc. I would not like to call it as" suffering from myopia" it is just a state of the eye which is naturally present in your case. Thus, please do not take it as a disorder. Rather, take it positively and focus on maintaining good healthy eyes. Unfortunately, it is not possible remove myopic refractive errors without surgery. It would be a good idea to maintain a healthy antioxidant rich diet. Let me enumerate the diet necessary for healthy eyes. (1) green leafy vegetables including spinach, sprouts, cabbage, beetroot. (2) fruits-blue-berries, black-berries, strawberries, raspberries, kiwi fruit, grapes, pineapple, pomegranate, grapes, guava. (3) dry-fruits: almonds, walnuts, apricots, dates. (4) cereals: oats, barley, millets. (5) drink a cup of green tea daily. (6) drink a glass of milk daily. Also, I have a few suggestions for you regarding the usage of computers, mobile phones and books. Follow the rule of" 20" this means that every 20 minutes, take a gap of 20 seconds, blink your eyes actively 20 times and focus at an object which is minimum 20 feet away. This will help in relieving your eyes from the continuous strain that is caused due to staring. Staring at the computer continuously causes us to subconsciously blink less than normal. This causes the tear film on the surface of the eye to dry up. The result of this is pain, discomfort, etc. Another suggestions regarding the usage of computers is to maintain a proper posture. The computer must be positioned at the same height as your eye level. The neck should not be inadvertently flexed or extended. Roughly, an angle of 90 degrees should be maintained between your upper body and thighs. Likewise, a similar angle (90 degrees) should be maintained between your lower legs and thighs. Also the angle between your hands and arms should be roughly 90 degrees. This is the healthy ergonomic way of sitting while using a computer. Maintenance of proper posture would help in further relieving the symptoms of eye discomfort and pain. You could consider preservative free lubricant eye drops 4 to 5 times daily. These eye drops would ensure that your eyes stay well lubricated and fresh. All these suggestions may take a while to sink in and imbibe in your routine. Once followed, they are sure to work wonders for you. Hope my suggestions help you. Take care. Regards.

My eye is red from 1 week and pain kin one eye can you suggest me what I should do.

FICO, DNB Ophtalmology
Ophthalmologist, Gandhinagar
My eye is red from 1 week and pain kin one eye can you suggest me what I should do.
Redness of the eyes has multiple causes associated with it. To enumerate a few common causes: (1) allergy of the eye. It is usually caused by improper eye hygiene. There is a tendency to rub the eyes with fingers, handkerchief, cloth, etc. This is not a good habit because it tends to transmit lots of virus, bacteria and dust into the eye. Allergy usually presents with symptoms of watering (clear water), redness and itching of the eye. (2) infectious conjunctivitis: this is usually associated with white-yellowish discharge. If so, it would be a good idea to go and show to an eye specialist in person. (3) foreign body lodged in the eye. This is more commonly associated with people who drive 2 wheeler vehicles without protection. It occurs more commonly in one eye. Foreign bodies that commonly get lodged are eyelashes, insect wings, small insects, dust particles, iron particles (more common with people working in the iron industry) the solution for a foreign body lodged in the eye would be better provided by an eye specialist at the clinic. (4) raised intraocular pressure: this is a condition known as glaucoma. It is not so common as the previous mentioned conditions. There is usually associated pain in the eyes. It is commonly bilateral (occurs in both eyes). There is usually a positive family history of glaucoma associated in a majority of the cases. (5) inflammation of the coats of the eyeball. This is known as" uveitis" it is also a relatively less common condition. There is associated pain. It would require a thorough eye checkup including the retina-thus a good idea would be to visit the eye specialist in person. (6) increased blood pressure. This has known to cause redness which is also known as sub-conjunctival hemorrhage. In this regard, a complete ophthalmic evaluation and a systemic evaluation is warranted. From the symptoms described by you, it seems more likely to be a case of allergy. Maintaining the precautions and hygiene that I mentioned should probably work well for you. You could also use a lubricant eye drop along with an anti-histamine eye drop. (3-4 times daily) hope my suggestions helped you.

I use glasses and no matter which glasses I wear, I dont feel comfortable wearing them until I adjust them every 10 min. This is because I have an irritation feeling over my face. So I remove my glasses, rub my face with my palm, and put the glasses back every ten min. Please help.

You shall first make sure the glasses you are using are correct or not (correctly prescribed, manufactured and fitted). Then get evaluated to know if you have dry eyes problem. Alternatively, first try to use some lubricating eye drops such as CCS or Zyaqua and see how you feel.
