Why Tracking Your Menstrual Cycles Is Important?

M.D. Gyn. & Obstetrics, MBBS, Diploma in Advanced Gynaec Laparoscopic Surgery, D.N.B., F.C.P.S.(Mid. & Gynae), D.G.O., D.F.P.
Gynaecologist, Mumbai
Why Tracking Your Menstrual Cycles Is Important?

Tracking the cycle means that you keep a record of when you are menstruating and what are the symptoms you experience. Many doctors emphasize on maintaining a regular planner and mark the first day of your period on the planner. This will help you as well as your doctor to diagnose the real cause of any problem you are suffering. You could know the length of the menstrual cycle and if the duration changes every time, you could take up the issue with the doctor.

It is very important for the woman who wants to conceive or who wants to avoid pregnancy to understand the rhythm of the cycle. Those women who have very regular cycles can find big help in the cycles as it is an effective tool for birth control. This method has been used since ages and it has proved effective to be most of the times.

Keeping track of your periods gives you a clear indicator of whether you have become pregnant because delay in menstrual onset implies pregnancy. The reverse is also true; if you are trying to get pregnant, conception is usually fruitful on these days of maximum ovulation, which you can easily calculate based on your well maintained menstrual record.

What to Track?

  1. Period heaviness by day — Does your period start with a couple of days of heavy flow and then taper off to a day or two of spotting? If so, you probably require different strengths of pads or tampons through the course of your cycle. Anticipating these needs can make your life much easier.
  2. Changes in mood during the menstrual cycle — If you experience PMS or PMDD, your moods may seem subject to random fluctuations. Start tracking your moods in the days leading up to and during your period, though, and you just might find that you wake up on the wrong side of bed exactly two days before starting your cycle each month.
  3. Energy level, appetite and other changes — A lot of women don't even realize how many aspects of their lives are dictated by the menstrual cycle, at least during parts of the month. When you track how you feel as your cycle approaches, you can learn some pretty interesting things about your habits. Also, it might be possible that tracking your energy level shows you that you are always exhausted on day three of your period, or that you get a headache before your period starts each month. When you track every aspect of your cycle, you won't be blindsided by your body's reactions to menstruation.

How should you go about keeping track of your menstruation?

While it not possible to note down every possible aspect of the menstruation in a notebook, the easiest way of maintaining a planner is to mark the first day of each period on the calendar. However, if you want to get a little more high-tech with it, there are computer programs, online trackers and smart-phone apps that give you the ability to keep up with every detail you could want. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a gynaecologist.

I am suffering from heavy bleeding. My problem is thickened endometrium. What should i do for this?
Hello Lybrate user- Prolonged menses or over flow during menses is known as Atyartava disease in ayurveda. Thickening of endometrium is not a good sign. It occurs due to improper diet and daily schedule. Try these tips to overcome this diseases- a) Avoid salty and spicy foods, avoid fast foods, green leafy vegetable and curd. B) Go to bed before 10 pm. C) Increase dairy product other than curd in your diet specially cow's ghee. D) Use Ashokaristha 2 tsp twice daily with water and tab pistil forte 1 tab twice daily.

It can be due to tablet. It's a high dose of hormone and it can cause menstrual irregularity. But if you have any doubt do a serum bhcg test.

Tips to Deal with a Patient Recovering from Brain Surgery

FRCS - Neurosurgery(UK), M.Ch - Neuro Surgery, MS - General Surgery, MBBS

Tips to Deal with a Patient Recovering from Brain Surgery

Undergoing Brain Surgery can be a very traumatic experience, and it is common for many patients recovering from brain surgery to face depression, spells of dizziness, confusion and weakness post the surgery. It can be very critical that family members and friends talk to the patient and be empathetic towards them.

It takes approximately 12-18 months for the brain to heal after a brain surgery and slowly and gradually the patient will regain all his normal functions and get back to his daily routine. However in that time they need the complete support and understanding of their families, as well may need help from therapists. This will help the patient in gaining back their independence as well as confidence in their abilities.

Here are some tips that will help you deal with a patient recovering from Brain Surgery:

  1. After brain surgery, a person may feel disoriented and have some speech or understanding disability for a while. Family members and friends are advised to take pause when talking to the patient, so that he/she can easily understand the conversation. Speaking slowly is not recommended, as patients may recognize it and have an emotional outburst or feel hurt.

  2. Caretakers and family members should also keep reminding the conversation topic at different points to the patient, so that it is easier for them to participate in the conversation.

  3. Family members should also not react adversely in case of emotional outbursts, instead show love and patience to a person recovering from brain surgery.

  4. Caregivers should make sure that the person recovering from brain surgery gets enough sleep and rest to recuperate.

  5. People interacting with someone recovering from brain surgery should understand that the person's ability to learn and remember will improve daily, and any lapses in attention by the patient are not caused by any act of obstinacy. Your care and understanding will be essential for a person to recover.

  6. Family members should also make sure just to give enough care and not smother the brain surgery survivor. It is essential for them to regain their confidence and a sense of competence.

Family members should take the patient for a neuropsychological examination--after treatment, 6 months later, and a year later to see if they are recovering properly. Caregivers should watch out for emotional outbursts, like rage, uncontrollable laughter, withdrawal and depression. In case of such symptoms it is advisable to take the patient for a check up with medical practitioner. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor and ask a free question.

I am 26 years old we planned for a baby. We are trying for a baby from last 3 months. But still I get periods. What is the reason behind that. Please give suggestions.

M. sc Psychology, BHMS
Homeopath, Hyderabad
Conceiving depends on pattern of your regular cycle, ovulation period. The no.& period when your participating play key role. Mostly participating in 2nd n 3rd wks is proper time, when your cycle runs for 28 days. Becoz, in that period, ovulation starts in normal regular cycles. If everything is okay regarding above mentioned, still you r not able to conceive, then you both go for a checkup.

Can anyone take primolut N even their periods got started. ? If they took during their periods what will happen?
Hello menstrual cycle is a natural process, so v should not stop it, n also natural means there should b no pain too. I would suggest you not to take such tablets, if you try postponing it now before or during periods whatever later it may cause heavy flow or sometimes may get irregular, so avoid such tablets is nly better is my opinion.
