Diabetes Proves Deadly for Smokers

While it is well known that smoking causes lung cancer, heavy smokers with diabetes are also at increased risk of death from causes other than lung cancer, according to a study being presented next week at the annual meeting of the radiological society of north america (rsna).

Diabetes is a chronic illness in which there are high levels of glucose in the blood. More than 29 million people in the u. S. Have diabetes, up from the previous estimate of 26 million in 2010, according to a report released by the centers for disease control and prevention. One in four people with diabetes doesn't know he or she has it. Having diabetes can also put people at risk for numerous other health complications.

To determine the extent to which diabetes is associated with deaths from lung cancer, other cancers, and other causes among heavy smokers, researchers examined the risk for all-cause mortality among people with and without diabetes within the national lung screening trial (nlst), a massive, multicenter trial that compared low-dose helical ct with chest x-ray for early detection of lung cancer in current and former heavy smokers.

" in our study, we found a statistically significant link between diabetes and all-cause deaths, non-lung cancer deaths and lung cancer deaths in women" said kavita garg, m. D, professor of radiology from the university of colorado -- denver.

For the study, Dr. Garg and colleagues looked at data from 53, 454 participants in the nlst and identified 5, 174 participants who reported having diabetes at screening.

They conducted an analysis of the relative risk for overall mortality, lung cancer mortality, and non-lung cancer mortality associated with diabetes, adjusting for age, gender, body mass index (bmi), and pack-years of smoking. Over the course of the study, there were 3, 936 total deaths, including 1, 021 from lung cancer and 826 from cancers not of the lung.

Participants with diabetes tended to be older, reported more pack-years of smoking, and had a higher bmi than those without diabetes. There were 650 deaths (12.6 percent of patients) among participants with diabetes and 3, 286 deaths (6.8 percent of patients) among participants without diabetes.

" we found that diabetes doubles the risk for all-cause mortality and non-lung cancer mortality among heavy smokers" Dr. Garg said" we also found that women with diabetes have an increased risk of lung-cancer mortality, but did not find the same effect in men"

The researchers continue to analyze data in an effort to better understand the underlying cause. In the meantime, Dr. Garg emphasizes the importance of taking control of diabetes and undergoing lung cancer screening if you're a smoker.

" patients have to take care of their diabetes to maximize the benefit of ct screening for lung cancer" she said" it truly makes a magnitude of difference in mortality risk"

To increase your stamina you need to exercise regularly and increase the time and intensity of your exercise. While exercising it is very important to breathe only through your nostrils. Aerobic exercise is the best and pay less emphasis on weight training as such. When you smoke you damage your lungs: when you smoke more you damage your lungs more: and if you smoke less you damage your lungs no less – well maybe a little less. The tobacco tar in cigarette smoke lines your lung with huge patches that make that portion dysfunctional. Your oxygen carrying capacity is jeopardized, and breathing is impinged upon. But don’t be discouraged because it is not too late even now to reverse all the ill-effects of smoking. I don’t know what other organs could be damaged but do go for a thorough medical check up to assess the effects of your abuse. Regarding improving your lungs, do a lot of aerobic exercise breathing through your nostrils only. Then there are a lot of deep breathing exercises in Yoga which you can learn too. Deep breathing cleanses your system and lungs and restores it to good health. Deep breathing uses the 80% of the lungs which are not normally used in normal breathing and even when exerting yourself. The greatest effect is in the lungs because this substance is processed through the respiratory system directly through the lung surface. You should start vigorous exercises, gradually increasing it over a period of time. Do deep breathing exercises every time you feel like smoking (try Yoga), and replace the oral urge with some healthy food substitute to satiate the need.

Dear Rajesh, If such a food is available, the doctors will be recommending it all over the world instead of creating awareness of depression and spending lots of money on developing new antidepressant tablets. However, whatever is recommended for heart's health is also advised for depression, like omega 3 rich food (oily fish, flax seeds). Tryptophan rich food like banana is also advised. The dose of them is highly impractical for anyone to consume.

Tremors, feeling anxious or nervous, sense of panic, sweating, increased heartbeat, feeling of impending doom, stomach discomfort, dizziness etc are signs of anxiety. These can be debilitating. If the anxiety us overwhelming, consult a psychiatrist at the earliest. With the right medication and counseling, it is likely your symptoms will improve. Other than that, try yoga, deep breathing, meditation, moderate exercise, progressive muscular relaxation and guided meditation. Please do not experiment with medicines. This is not something you can do on your own, based on what you have heard. Do not take any medications on your own without the approval of your treating doctor. Respected Sir, The numerous symptoms that you have mentioned could be due to the stress of your studies and exams. However they could also be due to various other medical/ neurological reasons. Hence I would suggest that you first get consultation from a Physician or Neurologist to rule out any physical causes for your symptoms. Now coming to the mental part, I would suggest that you keep a schedule or time table first and learn to manage your time. This is important as the memory loss could be due to overcrowding of your brain with many thoughts. Secondly, keep some daily for Exercises, yoga or atleast some basic relaxation exercises. These could not only help in improving your mental state but also help with your allergies. If the symptoms still persist and no physical cause is identified, I would suggest that you get in touch with a psychiatrist too to get yourself thoroughly evaluated and get the necessary treatment.

Alcohol dependence is associated with significant physical, mental and social problems. Physically, there can be liver failure, jaundice, vomiting of blood, passing blood in stools, stomach ulcers, damage to nerves of the body, swelling of legs, fluid collection in abdomen, and many more. Mentally, there is irreversible brain damage, worsening of anxiety or depression, triggering of psychosis and mood disorders, dementia, etc. From a social point of view, there may be isolation from neighbors or family, increased abusive behavior to children or spouses, legal problems, accidents, etc. Anti craving medications are available which will help to reduce the craving. Consult a psychiatrist with experience in deaddiction.

Dear Mit, You have to motivate him for stopping chewing tobacco. Apart from the bad effects of chewing tobacco, you have to inform him of health benefits of stopping. You should understand, it is not easy. You should appreciate any small efforts he takes to stop - though there are lapses in between. Make him chew only the betel leaves and nuts without tobacco. He can keep his mouth busy with cloves, elachi or cinnamon also. If he has withdrawal, assure him of nicotine replacement chewing gum. In 12 weeks time he will be able to master his craving. Keep giving him some gifts for reducing tobacco chewing. Show him the results of his medical illnesses's improvement like BP or sugar results.

Dear Lybrate user. In many of the cases Stammering has two important reasons. Vocal chord misalignment or other problems are the primary reason. For this vocal chord complaint, you should consult an ENT specialist and get it corrected. Second reason is purely psychological. Stammer therapy can help you in psychological reasons. Take care.

Dear Lybrate user, At your age, Memory problems like amnesia are not common. Many young people are having problems with memory. These problems are either they are too busy or due to anxiety and stress. Busy people use organizers or employ a personal assistant because they can't remember every task. You need to understand this. If you still say, you are having memory problems, we need to check your memory using memory test. If you want more of my help in this regard, please contact me. Memory and mind power depends on three aspects. Understanding, retention and recollection. Recollection is easy if your retention is proper and flawless. Retention is possible when you are able understand what you read or learn. To understand you should have concentration. Concentration comes from effective learning techniques based on creative and active learning. Physical exercise, outdoor games, entertainment, socializing coupled with systematic learning improves your memory and mind power. Vegetables, fruits and nuts are perfect for memory. Brain games like sudoku and jigsaw puzzles helps too. Avocados, Beetroots, Blueberries, Broccoli. Celery, Coconut Oil, Dark Chocolate etc are good for improving concentration and memory. I suggest online education counseling. Take care.

Respected Sir, Depression is a medical or psychiatric diagnosis that can and should only be diagnosed after consultation with a psychiatrist. It is not just a sad mood that persists for a certain duration. It is a syndrome characterized by Depressed mood, loss of interest, decreased energy, easy fatiguability, decreased concentration, reduced self esteem, changes in your sleep, activity, appetite and also accompanies by depressive ideas such as hopelessness, helplessness, worthlessness and guilt. There are many other components for you to be diagnosed with depression. Hence first confirm your diagnosis after a proper consult and then search for the remedy. However if its not depression and just a sadness, even then I would need to know the reason or triggering factors behind your current condition to help you properly.

This is an unfounded fear of people developed from sometime in your childhood perhaps or because it could be a family trait or behavior. We are all social animals and need to learn to live and be with people all through our lives. If this is crippling you, you need to meet with a counselor and sort out this fear of people. The counselor will guide you and help you will some measures to build self-image, self-esteem and to learn to love yourself. You need to believe that people are basically good and the threat you envisage may be ill-founded on some misconstrued notion developed over many years and experiences. Anyway, you must deal with your fear of people and it will be the best solution to your problem. You need to change your perception of the fearful stimulus then you can change your response to the fear. The first one is the best and will preempt the need for the second. If you are already far gone into the reaction mode, then you need both responses to counter the attack. The way we see things in life (like half empty or half full glass) is very dependent on our attitude. Attitude may have developed over many years but fortunately, can change in a matter of sustained choices made and acted upon now. Accordingly, you choose to see things as either threatening or as an opportunity. The opportunist will be positive and will work with the situation to make good out of it. The individual who sees it as threatening, will, out of fear, try to avoid/run away from the situation or react with anxiety. Yes, self-belief does impact it too, but you can see that prior to that, perception will tarnish the belief system too. Here, you can see that all the resolution lies in just changing your perception/attitude, even if it is against odds. Changing your response, despite the perception, is building up of your reserves and resources to handle any contingency that life throws up at you. And life throws up situations quite regularly and heavily. In the meantime do some confidence building exercises by attending a personality development course, public speaking skills course (I suggest you join the Toastmasters Club), work out at a gym to build good self-image, and join social events to practice your skills. Surprisingly many people are often in the same boat as you, and so you are not alone. The very people you are intimidated by may be afraid of you too, though not to this extent! There are three important developments to have to create an autonomous personality: Awareness, intimacy, and spontaneity. If you are super aware or too conscious of yourself, it will affect the intimacy and spontaneity. Although your problem is now directly to do with intimacy, you can see that they are all connected. Go and work on these matters with a counselor for this level of social panic to disappear from your life for good.

The word depressed is a common everyday word. People might say" i'm depressed" when in fact they mean" i'm fed up because i've had a row, or failed an exam, or lost my job" etc. These ups and downs of life are common and normal. Most people recover quite quickly. With true depression, you have a low mood and other symptoms each day for at least two weeks The common symptoms are (few might be present in a person with depression) Feelings of sadness, tearfulness, emptiness or hopelessness Angry outbursts, irritability or frustration, even over small matters Loss of interest or pleasure in most or all normal activities, such as sex, hobbies or sports Sleep disturbances, including insomnia or sleeping too much Tiredness and lack of energy, so even small tasks take extra effort Changes in appetite — often reduced appetite and weight loss, but increased cravings for food and weight gain in some people Anxiety, agitation or restlessness Slowed thinking, speaking or body movements Feelings of worthlessness or guilt, fixating on past failures or blaming yourself for things that aren't your responsibility Trouble thinking, concentrating, making decisions and remembering things Frequent or recurrent thoughts of death, suicidal thoughts, suicide attempts or suicide Unexplained physical problems, such as back pain or headaches.

Dear Lybrate user, Thanks for contacting us. It seems like you are going through a great loss and it makes a lot of sense that you are feeling very sad and have a hard time accepting that she is no more. Losing a loved one is a painful experience and it might feel like it's never going to be better. It was only less than two months since she passed away though, so give yourself some time. Allow yourself to feel sad, angry, hopeless - whatever feelings might be there - and then move on. Take your time. Things will change, even though it might not feel like it. Everyone deals with grief differently and there are no right or wrong ways, but there are ways to cope with the pain that might help you. Connecting with others might help you heal. Have you tried talking to others who have experienced something similar? There are support groups of people who are all experiencing a loss of a loved one who can help each other cope with their loss and grief. They often find that they are not only supported by others who can understand them, but also realise that others need them too. If you feel the need to talk to one of us we can certainly set up a session online to do the same. Else do contact a psychologist at Aurangabad to help you process your grief. I hope this was helpful for you. All the best!
