A speech disorder, stuttering usually occurs in childhood where the person affected has problems in speaking coherently. Elongated pauses, repetition of syllables and lengthening of words are symptoms of this disorder. It is caused due to damage to the neural connections in the region related to speech in the brain. Speech and language therapy are used in treating the symptoms of stammering. It can also be genetic as it is sometimes passed on to the offspring from the affected parent or any other family member.
