Lymphoedema is a lymphatic obstruction, which can cause swelling in one or both the arms and legs. It occurs when there is blockage or obstruction in the lymphatic system that causes retention of the localized tissue fluid and leads to swelling of the tissues. Lymphoedema a chronic disease, which has no definite cure to it. Symptoms like swelling of arms or legs, heaviness or tightness in the swollen limb, restricted movement, pain, discomfort, relapse of infections and fibrosis are seen in this condition. Lymphoedema is of two types, and these are- Primary Lymphoedema, which is caused due faulty genes that affect the development of the lymphatic system; and Secondary Lymphoedema, which is caused due to damage of the lymphatic system.
HOW IS LYMPHOEDEMA DIAGNOSED?
Primary Lymphoedema is less common compared to secondary Lymphoedema and is estimated to affect around one in every 6,000 people.
