Lung cancer is a fatal disease and has in fact, put an end to the life of many people. Though completely preventing it might not be possible but a few preventive measures can certainly lower your risk.

Check out the list below to reduce your risk of lung cancer

  • Quit smoking - If you stop smoking before cancer develops, your damaged lung tissue gradually starts to repair itself. No matter what your age is or for how long you have smoked, quitting may lower your risk of lung cancer and help you live longer.
  • Avoid second-hand smoke - Living with a smoker raises your chances of developing lung cancer by 20 to 30 percent. And, if you find anyone around you smoking, politely ask them not to.  Or try limiting your exposure to areas where you know smoking is a common practice.
  • Eat a healthy diet - A  healthy diet with lots of fruits and vegetables may also help reduce your risk of lung cancer. Some evidences suggest that a diet high in fruits and vegetables may help protect against lung cancer in both smokers and non-smokers.
  • Get yourself moving - Even moderate amounts of exercising can be of great help in preventing lung cancer. Studies suggest that even something as simple as gardening twice a week is associated with a lower risk of developing lung cancer.
  • Avoid air pollution - Long-term exposure to air pollution and, in particular, particulate matter with absorbed polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and other genotoxic chemicals have been suspected to increase the risk for lung cancer. So, avoid air pollution as much as possible.
  • Have green tea -  Regular consumption of green tea has shown to prevent some of the damage to cells caused by smoking. And studies suggest that those who consume more green tea may have a lower risk of lung cancer. However, that best thing to do is simply quit smoking.
  • Say no to alcohol - It is another important step that you must take towards preventing your risk of lung cancer. So, make sure you do not indulge in any such habits.
