Prostate cancer begins in the prostate gland. It is a slow growing cancer among men and generally affects the ones above 40 years of age. The prostate gland is responsible for carrying urine from the bladder in men and helps in production of semen which contains sperm.

The fact is, till date there have been no proven results that show prostate cancer is preventable. But, another important thing that you should not miss out on is that you can definitely lower the risk of this form of cancer by being mindful about a few factors.

The following measures can help you against prostate cancer:

  1. Lead a healthy lifestyle: Strictly avoid smoking and alcohol consumption. Also, if you have had prostate cancer in the past and you still smoke then you are more likely to have a recurrence of the condition.

  2. Monitor your weight: Weight is one of the major risk factors for prostate cancer. In case you are overweight then focus on shedding the extra kilos. Limit the amount of calories you consume and exercise everyday.

  3. Eat right: It is suggested that bringing down your calcium intake and fat that comes from red meat and excess dairy products can help in preventing the onset of this cancer. The calcium intake should not go beyond 1,500 mg per day. Cooked tomatoes with olive oil as well as cruciferous vegetables including broccoli and cauliflower should be included in your diet.

  4. Keep your blood pressure under check: High blood pressure can be a  serious concern, especially the kind that is triggered by stress and causes hypertension. Also, ensure that your cholesterol levels are within control. Consult a doctor and take medications to manage hypertension if required.

  5. Get yourself screened regularly: If you have a family history of prostate cancer then your chances of suffering from the disease increase. Hence, it is recommended to get an annual screening done so that you eliminate the chances of finding it out late.

So, with the help of these healthy practices you can prevent the risk of prostate cancer.
