Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder - How it Affects Men and Women?

Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder - How it Affects Men and Women?

Do you feel disinterested in getting physically close to your partner? If yes, then it can be a sign of HSDD, that is Hypoactive sexual desire disorder. It is a sex disorder marked by disgust and disinterest towards sex. This disorder affects both men and women.

Men with Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder
Men are generally perceived as highly sexual beings, but in reality, 1 out of 5 men may be suffering from HSDD.

Some possible causes of male HSDD include:

  1. Psychological issues: Anxiety and stress due to the strain of family or relationship problems, rigours of daily life or mental disorders such as depression are some of the factors that influence sexual desire.
  2. Medical causes: Diseases (for example: diabetes), conditions (such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure and obesity) and drugs (such as hair loss medications) have adverse effects on sexual desire.
  3. Hormonal problems: Low levels of testosterone usually lead to low sexual desire. Other hormones, such as the thyroid hormone or prolactin (hormone that governs the development of breast milk) can also contribute to the cause.
  4. Low levels of dopamine: Dopamine is a neurotransmitter, which is responsible for the pleasure perception in your brain. Low levels of dopamine usually signify low sexual desire.

How it can be treated ?
If the cause is psychological, then sex therapy (psychological counselling based on sexual issues) is used to treat HSDD. But if it is hormonal, testosterone supplements are used.

Women with Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder
Female HSDD is more complicated and is difficult to diagnose. HSDD can affect women across all ages.

In women, this disorder can have a wider spectrum of causes, which include:

  1. Interpersonal relationship problems: Certain problems such as the partner’s performance issues, loss of emotional gratification with relationships, childbirth and becoming nothing, but only a loved one’s caregiver can all lead to low sexual desire.
  2. Sociocultural influences: Media’s portrayal of sexuality, peer pressure and job stress have negative influences on sexual desire.
  3. Low testosterone: Women produce testosterone as well, and similar to men, low levels of this sex hormone cause a significant dip in sexual desire.
  4. Medical problems: Mental illnesses such as depression or medical problems, such as fibroids or endometriosis (a disorder characterized by the growth of uterine tissues outside the organ) affect women, physically and mentally, thus making ‘hypoactive sexual desire disorder’ a possibility.
  5. Medications: Excessive use of antidepressants, oral contraceptives and blood pressure drugs can lower sexual desire.
  6. Age: The androgen (sex hormone) levels lower drastically as a woman ages, thus negatively impacting her sexual desires.

Treatment

Sex therapy (therapy that concerns itself with counselling and addressing one’s physical or psychological hindrances to sex) medication changes, diagnosing underlying medical problems, vaginal estrogens and testosterone therapy (therapy that helps in managing the effects of low levels of testosterone) are mostly used to increase sexual desire in women. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a sexologist and ask a free question.

An Overview of Sexual Addiction & Sex Addicts It is well known among people in the 12-step programs that of all the addictions, sex is the most difficult to master. Far from the notion that sex addiction is the “fun” one, the suffering of people dealing with this affliction is enormous. It is common for members of the sex recovering groups to be unable to maintain any continuous time of sexual sobriety, giving way to despair and hopelessness. Before treatment, sexual enactment is the addict’s only source of safety, pleasure, soothing and acceptance. It vitalizes and connects. It relieves loneliness, emptiness and depression. Sex addiction has been called the athlete’s foot of the mind: It is an itch always waiting to be scratched. The scratching, however, causes wounds and never alleviates the itch. The percentage of people who go to therapy or a 12-step program is quite small. The majority of sexual compulsives live in isolation, filled with feelings of shame. Almost 100 percent of the people who come to me for an initial consultation — whether it be for compulsive use of prostitutes, phone sex, a fetish, cross dressing, or masochistic encounters with dominatrixes — relay that beneath the shame they feel in telling me their story, they also experience a sense of freedom that comes from finally being able to share with another human being the hidden, shameful, sexually compulsive acts that imprison them. The life of a sex addict gradually becomes very small. The freedom of self is impaired. Energies are consumed. The rapacious need for a particular kind of sexual experience drives the addict to spend untold hours in the world of his addiction. Inexorably, the compulsion begins to exact higher and higher costs. Friends slip away. Hobbies and activities once enjoyed are dropped. Financial security crumbles as thousands of dollars a year are spent on sex. Then there is perpetual fear of exposure. Relationships with partners are ruined. The appeal of intimate sex with a partner pales in comparison to the intense “high” of indulging in the dark and devious world of sexual compulsion. What is a Sex Addict? Sex addiction, of course, has nothing to do with sex. Any sexual act or apparent “perversion” has no meaning outside of its psychological, unconscious context. What sets sex addiction apart from other addictions and makes it so persistent is that the subject of sex touches on our innermost unconscious wishes and fears, our sense of self, our very identity. While the definition of sex addiction is the same as that of other addictions — recurrent failure to control the behavior and continuation of the behavior despite increasingly harmful consequences — sexual compulsion is set apart from other addictions in that sex involves our innermost unconscious wishes, fears and conflicts. Sex addiction is a symbolic enactment of deeply entrenched unconscious dysfunctional relationships with self and others. It involves a derailed developmental process that occurred as a result of inadequate parenting. Treatment of Sex Addiction Current treatment might include: participating in a 12-step program; going to an outpatient clinic; engaging in aversion therapy; or using medications to stave off hypersexuality. Cognitive-behavioral therapy is used to help the patient control or repress the instinct for a period of time. Addicts usually have a dysfunctional mother-child relationship. An unempathic, narcissistic, depressed or alcoholic mother has low tolerance for the child’s stress and frustrations. Nor is she able to supply the empathy, attention, nurturing and support that foster healthy development. The result in later life is separation anxiety, fear of abandonment and a sense of imminent self-fragmentation.

This fluid coming out is semen .Semen, also known as seminal fluid, is an organic fluid that contains sperms. It is secreted by the sexual glands. Semen coming out at night is also called Night fall or Nocturnal emission or Wet dreams. Do not be tensed about this issue. It is normal at your age. It is not an illness but a natural phenomenon by which old sperms come out and make space for new sperms. New sperms are produced continuously in our body by pushing away the older ones. It does not cause any physical harm or weakness.

I am 58 years old and from Mumbai. Travelling to office - to and from around 80 kms daily. On 14.09.2016 I have done blood test and the report shows --- FASTING BLOOD SUGAR -- 109.30. Please advise.

MBBS, MRCGP ( UK), Diploma in Diabetes (UK), DFSRH (UK), DRCOG (UK)
Endocrinologist, Hyderabad
Hello Sir, according to your fasting blood glucose you are in the Pre-diabetes range. You can bring your blood glucose to Non- diabetic range by following a good healthy diet and exercise. Plan: 1) Eat plenty of vegetables, whole grains, pulses, milk, fruits. Avoid fatty food and sugary stuff. You can treat yourself to these high calorie stuff once a week so that you derive some pleasure in eating. But watch your portion sizes (ie instead of big slice of cake eat a smaller one) 2) exercise at least 30-45 min daily - walking, jogging, cycling etc. Start slow and gradually increase the duration and intensity. 3) By doing 1) and 2) above you can lose weight. Your ideal weight is around 67 kg. This will also help your blood glucose to come under control. 4) Check your fasting and post prandial blood glucose in 3-6 months. Hope this helps you. Thank you.

Hiv test 4th and western blot result negative after 20 months of exposure. Did I do rna pcr for double sure? Is any possibilities become positive in this test? Pls hlp.

Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine and Surgery (BAMS)
Sexologist, Faridabad
YOU CAN DO RNA OR PCR TEST RNA tests detect the virus directly (instead of the antibodies to HIV) and thus can detect HIV at about 10 days after infections soon as it appears in the bloodstream, before antibodies develop. These tests cost more than antibody tests and are generally not used as a screening test, although your doctor may order one as a follow-up test, after a positive antibody test, or as part of a clinical workup.

Follow these steps and stay away from Constipation

MD
General Physician, Delhi
Follow these steps and stay away from Constipation
1. Make sure to chew your food properly, and avoid drinking water intermittently while eating.

2. Eat less of fatty, oily, greasy foods and meat. Restrict tea, coffee and sweet food stuff including sweetened carbonated beverages or packaged juices.

3. Drink at least 8-10 glasses of water daily unless advised by your physician otherwise

4. Exercise daily for at least 30 to 45 minutes. Brisk walking outside in fresh air is the best and safest exercise unless you have joint issues or other health problems that prohibit you from doing so.

5. Abdominal massage, daily, either by you yourself or by a trained masseur helps not only in toning the abdominal muscles but also facilitate intestinal peristalsis thereby aiding empty bowels.

Consult me online for queries regarding constipation.

I feel guilty in sleeping in night I can't sleep long time in night during twelve to three AM. Is there any medicine to recover the problem.

MBBS
General Physician, Mumbai
Dear lybrate user, use your bed only for sleeping and not for other activities. Switch off the lights and other gadgets like television and mobile before you go to sleep. If you are not into reading books, please start now. You may read your favourite book during night time. The eye strain may induce sleep. You can have a bath before going to sleep. It is also known to induce sleep. Please do not sleep in the afternoon. That is the main reason for not getting sleep early at night.
