I m not sleep well feeling so much stress on me please suggest the any solution how to control pressure.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
I don’t know if you are fully aware: you have mentioned that you are suffering from stress, which in itself can disturb your sleep. Instead of worrying too much about causes, why don’t you implement some of my suggestions, because they work effectively. The lack of sleep, i.e. sleep for less than 6 hours per night, is directly linked to about 86 diseases! So let us first focus on that. In your case particularly, do not sleep during the day; don’t even lie down. Go for regular exercise (breathing through your nostrils only) at a fixed time (at about 6 am) every day, whether you sleep or not. You must develop this habit of sleeping by 10 pm latest every night and wake up at a uniform time by 6 am every morning, even if you do not get sleep. If you do not get sleep, just lie down and if you have a bed lamp (or you could get one) lie down and read something light but not exciting. Your eyes will tire and you will fall asleep. If you like you may also put on light and soft music with the sleep function on. Depending on whether you are a visual or auditory person, you may watch TV in a lying down position until you feel sleepy. Have a warm bath before going to bed (for some people a cold bath at night seems to induce sleep! If you are one of them, please do so). Place the head side of your bed in a North-South position. The room must be as dark as possible and there should be no electronic items that give off even a light LED glow. There must be ample ventilation in the room. Avoid strong odors, except lavender, on your body or in the room, or on your sheets and clothes. There should not be any live plants in your bedroom. Sleep with the lightest of clothes or without any clothing. When lying down to sleep, lie down on your left ear as much as possible. Do not sleep directly under an overhead fan. You must eat a good breakfast, a fairly light lunch, and an early dinner, which should be a very light meal. Whatever you eat in the other meals, have only a pure carbohydrate meal at night with any vegetables, and preferably before 8 pm. Do not drink much liquids after or near about dinner time. When lying down to sleep you may use the 4-7-8 breathing pattern of sleep inducement i.e. breathe in for four counts through your nostril only, hold for 7 counts, and exhale with a whoosh sound, through your mouth only, for 8 counts. Repeat this four times in the morning and just before you sleep at night. If you know Emotional Freedom Technique or EFT (check this out either on YouTube or Google), then please practice this too for sleep induction. Self-hypnosis and slow relaxation techniques, at night will be tremendously useful. Acupuncture or acupressure will both be very useful too. Pray last thing at night before you sleep.

I am 23 male. I made plans and I am good at everything I write in plans. I don't have sense of time and I wasted last 5 years thinking why am I so careless and lazy and started feeling low about myself. I was previously patient of depression and treated for that but in a row I become patient of chronic procrastination I think. I don't bath for week though I use to live very hygienically. I am treated with valporic acid by my doctor and I feel frustrated with each and every day as I am not doing anything just distracting myself into something else. Please help me I wasted so much of time that I cant afford to be unhealthy for a second.

D.P.M(psychiatry) [Diploma in Psychological medicine] , MBBS
Psychiatrist, Jalna
Hello, I can understand what is worrying you and your situation right now. First, i'd suggest that you don't need to use every second just for achieving something. Devote some time to yourself, pick out your hobbies, join some sport or music club. The purpose of life is to be content, happy and peaceful and not merely be an achiever. Secondly, what you describe sounds like bipolar depression. For this, optimize your dose of valproate, if that doesn't help much, there are medicines that can be used along with valproate for bipolar depression. Take care.

I became angry very fast but I dnot want. I try to b happy but my problem follow me.

Dear lybrate-user, welcome to lybrate. Anger and aggression are emotions. Anger comes when you become irritated. Irritation happens when you don't like something, or when something is repeated. As anger is an emotion, it should be vent out. You should be able to throw anger out instead of controlling it. But more perfect will be, know the frustrating situations and stop being emotional. If practiced properly, you will not get irritated at those circumstances at all. Those techniques are much easier to understand. I suggest anger management therapy. Take care.

Hey I'm 19 years old and goes to university. I'm a little good at math because I don't have to remember long paragraphs in math but the problem is I can't remember long answer that's why I failed in computer fundamentals. I prepared very well at home but in examination hall all the stuff that I had learned suddenly disappear. I can't even write a single sentence. Please tell me how can I improve my memory. And give some tips to study better and learn long paragraphs and remember it. Please help. Thanks.

Dear lybrate user, welcome to lybrate. Memory and mind power depends mainly on three aspects. Understanding, storage and recollection. To understand what you are studying, you must be able to be attentive or concentrate. Concentration is possible when you are interested in that subject. Creative way of learning can help you concentrate and understand easily. When you are able to understand and concentrate, it is stored within your brain. If you read more and more it will be store in long term memory. Third part is retrieval. Whenever you want to retrive what you learned and stored, your brain gets the request, searches the database and retrieves the information for you. The retrieval may prove to be difficult if you are anxious, stressed, worried or tired physically or mentally. Retrieval is more easy when you are relaxed and healthy. Brain needs nutrients to keep itself sharp. Fruits, vegetables and dry fruits provide much needed nutrients for your brain. Include at least one fruit in your daily diet. Physical exercises, entertainment, hobbies, relaxation, memory games like sudoku etc help keep your memory sharp and active. Take care.

Yesterday I swam longer distance than usual. Since then I feel quite out of breath with chest tightness. I'm also quite tired. I am often getting tired sooner than people my age. I often have chest tightness although today it is much worse. I am just lying down this afternoon. Could this be caused by anxiety? Am I making something out of nothing? How can I tell?

MBBS, MD Psychiatry, DNB Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Nagpur
Being concerned about ones health issues is not anxiety. Swimming more than your usual, means you crossed your usual physical limits, that is natural to create strain on your physical health. I think rest and relaxation should bring you relief. About your capacities, physical I assume, being less as compared to people of your age ma need some evaluation. Consult your physician for an assessment.

Hi, I am 32 year old, mother of a 3 year old. Since my delivery 3 years back I am suffering from depression. I took treatment (medications) for around 8/9 months but then stopped after I changed cities. I felt I was getting addicted to them. I couldn't sleep without meds. I have forgotten the medicine name. Last 1 year, with no medications, I have been suffering terribly. Feel very lonely abandoned. Take out all my frustrations on my child. I am worried I am not giving a healthy environment to my child. I have lost all intimacy with my husband. I can't stand him at times. I feel people always take me for a ride No one loves me unconditionally. Pls help me.

It's better to make time for yourself and do whatever you like. Join for art or music classes. Spend time creatively. Its good if you join for yoga. Find out any ladies club is there nearby. Become a member and spend time in a good way. Keep yourself busy and grooming. Enjoy with your child. Mother is the best teacher. Teach him good values and give him quality time. Take him out. Play with him. By doing so your child will develop a caring and affectionate bond with you.

How to forgot someone who had left and made me depressed my heart beat faster when I think about her.

Diploma in Obstetrics & Gynaecology, MBBS
General Physician, Delhi
Keep yourself occupied, time is a great healer, no medicines or smoking to get over the ditch, may be she has moved on for a reason and you should learn to accept it. Do not remind yourself again and again, it will be keeping wounds raw and you will be rubbing salt on them by talking about it to people. Write everything in a diary and do not read again.

I am 37 male. From some last six month I feel lack of concentration & memory. Please suggest some homeopathic medicines to improve the concentration & memory so I can remember the things easily? Last year some circumstances occurred in the family which disappointed me very much. I think this is the main cause which has affected my brain power.

(MRCPSYCH-UK), MD - Psychiatry, MBBS

Tension, forgetfulness and decreased concentration can be a symptom of depression or anxiety. Consult a psychiatrist for effective treatment. Eat well, sleep on time, maintain a regular day structure, meditation, breathing exercises, focus on the task, rehearse all these will improve your memory and concentration and reduce stress.

Actually my problem is I can't walk most times doctors are saying its because stress. Please advice

Psychologist, Calicut
Feeling weak in the knees or experiencing “jelly” or “rubber” legs is a common stress response reaction. Most people in fearful or stressful situations experience weak legs. The degree of weakness often is directly proportional to the degree of fear or stress. Also, since stress hormones are stimulants, a body that is persistently stress response overstimulated can become tired and feel weak. This weakness often is experienced in the limbs, such as the arms and legs. Fortunately, stress-caused weak legs is not caused by a serious disease, and is therefore, not a cause for concern. Once your stress and anxiousness have been addressed, this symptom diminishes and eventually disappears.

Few months back I was suffering from depression. Cut my wrist and got 4 stitches. Now I encounter difficulty in sleeping and feel very alone and sometimes want to cry very much. I have shared my problem with my best friend but he just say me that you will destroy yourself. People never understand my problem. I can't sleep at night easily and this effects my mood and I suffer from headache. Please help me.

MBBS, DPM
Psychiatrist, Bangalore
Dear lybrate-user, You may be evolving into a borderline personality disorder. Depression, cutting wrist, feeling alone, sharing with a boy etc may be due to your personality weakness. Still you have not fixed your personality at 16 years of age. You can develop a better personality if you take treatment like Cognitive Behaviour therapy or DBT. Please consult a clinical psychologist or psychiatrist who is trained in these therapies for help.
