Stress Management

MD - Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Alappuzha
Stress Management

The pace of modern life makes stress management a necessary skill for everyone. Many people juggle multiple responsibilities, work, home life, caregiving, and relationships. Learning to identify problems and implement solutions is the key to successful stress reduction.

The first step in successful stress relief is deciding to make stress management an ongoing goal, and to monitor your stress level.

Once you start monitoring your stress level, the next step is identifying your stress triggers. When or under what situations do you experience the most stress? some causes of stress are easy to identify, such as job pressures, relationship problems or financial difficulties. But daily hassles and demands, such as commuting, arranging child care or being overcommitted at work, also can contribute to your stress level.

Positive events also can be stressful. If you got married, started a new job and bought a new house in the same year, you could have a high-stress level. While negative events, in general, are more stressful, be sure to also assess positive changes in your life.

Once you've identified your stress triggers, you can start thinking about strategies for dealing with them. Identifying what aspect of the situation you can control is a good starting point.

For example, if you have a difficult time falling asleep because you're stressed out, the solution may be as easy as turning off the tv when the evening news is too distressing. Other times, such as high demands at work or when a loved one is ill, you may only be able to change how you react to the situation.

And don't feel like you have to figure it out all on your own. Seek help and support from family and friends. You may want to ask them what stress-relief techniques have worked well for them.

And many people benefit from the daily practice of stress-reduction techniques, such as deep breathing, massage, tai chi or yoga. Many people manage stress through practicing mindfulness in meditation or being in nature.

And remember to maintain a healthy lifestyle to help manage stress - eat a healthy diet, exercise regularly and get enough sleep. Having a healthy lifestyle will help you manage periods of high stress.

Stress won't disappear from your life. And stress management isn't an overnight cure. But with ongoing practice and incorporation of resiliency into your lifestyle, you can learn to manage your stress level and increase your ability to cope with life's challenges.

Smoking is not only your problem, but also a global problem. I suggest you some practices to get rid of the habit. But it is only Your Own will power/fortitude/guts, say whatever it is, it will only lead you to success. 1)Announce a particular date (within a week) on which you are going to stop smoking, to all your friends, neighbors, family members etc., 2) Enjoy smoking as much as possible till that date, but with 100% consciousness (just like meditation you should concentrate only at the smoking activity itself). 3)Make some arrangements so that you and your family members, particularly your parents, should be inside your home for a few days(more is better). 4) Be psychologically prepared to face some mood changes like feeling of losing something, thoughts about life without smoking is not possible, even headache, constipation, restlessness etc., all these are withdrawal symptoms and only temporary. Will loose strength day after day. 5)On the particular day close yourself inside home and start meditating (recite the mantra "I WILL NEVER SMOKE EVEN AT THE COST OF MY DEATH' to yourself very strongly and repeatedly). For the next few days do nothing else except this meditation. You will have the positive energy to fight against the habit. And again, it's your strong will power that gives you what you want. Your second question, size of the penis doesn't matter, it matters only the Erection of the penis. Bcs even a two-inche erect penis is sufficient to satisfy a woman sexually. So nothing to worry about it.

For at around 4 years I was taking antipsychotic medicine sulpitac 50. Now I stop taking that medicine. Now I am taking homeopathic medicine acconitum nappellous 30. Now I am feeling good. But sometime I feel anxious although I can manage that. I am so much concern about my behavior. Nowadays I am feeling very harder to talk with people with eye contact. And even I can not talk with eye contact with children also. I think my eyes are to big to them while I talk with someone with eye contact. I feel very sad for this. I know it is social phobia. How can I solve this problem? I am also doing some yoga.

Dear Lybrate user. It's good that you are concern about your mental health and actively taking concrete step to improve that. I think you should also start taking some one on one sessions with Clinical Psychologist. There are therapies which could help you. Other then taking one on one sessions. As you said you do yoga. Try doing Yoga with some family member or any friend. Try to do first with one person and slowly incorporate group of 2-3 people. This will help you giving exposure to interacting with people. You can practice talking in front of the mirror. Start with some small conversation like introducing yourself. While standing in front of mirror try make eye contact with your reflection. Another thing you can try is joining some hobby club. Choose something which is your cup of tea. May b singing or dance or theatre. You can join reading club. All these wil help you. Take small step, break your tasks and soon you will overcome your anxiety. Take Care.

My fiance was depressed due to his failure in competitive exam and his illness from last year. He always had mood swings but we were having a healthy relationship with love. We used to discuss abt almost everything and many times he feels low then he used to come to me and get relaxed. But due to anxiety and fear for future he was not able to concentrate on studies due to negative thoughts. He has been given pexep cr 12.5 mg and neurodin multivitamin tablets to be taken once in a day and now he is very relaxed and concentrated for studies. He has completed course of 3 months for this dose and been given omega fish oil capsule in place of earlier medicine. From last month he has been taking omega capsules. Meanwhile due to his viral fever and weakness his studies get affected. His exams are after 10 days and he is really clncioua n afraid n negative abt his health. He was having dry cough n he has show it to doctor n doctor has given him antibiotics n syrup. His eyes r really heavy from long time. I do not understand the reason behind dis heaviness n unable to sleep at night. Is it due to cold or surviving medication or tensions for upcoming exams. Pls suggest the reasons and home remedies so that he can concentrate for exams as there are only 10 days remaining for exams.

It is very difficult to suggest something to work so fast. However it does look like he had not sought counseling in tandem with the medication and that could be the cause of a lot of the discomfort. He needs to learn skills and techniques to handle the stresses of life and the depression. The failure and the illnesses could have aggravated his condition. Also he can use some of these suggestions written in the second person but you can understand and apply: Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber, nuts, avocado, exercise regularly, eat dark chocolate, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. I suggest you do the opposite of what this depression makes you feel like doing (actually, not doing): you will need to fight this condition. You must become active; stay upright during the daylight time; meet people; never sleep during the day, wake up by 6 am every day, play some active games, especially contact games, do physical exercises, talk to people and join some social clubs, attend Yoga classes etc. Watch sitcoms on TV or comedies and cheer yourself up. Go for excursions in groups, for outings, camps, conferences, and religious conventions. Get a pet dog and spend time training it, exercising it and relating to it. Expose yourself to some sunlight every day, at least, 30 minutes but not in the scorching heat. Whatever happens, please incorporate these three important adaptations in your life: always be responsible, be respectful, and be functional. If you did these three, lots of things will go well in life. Please pray and have faith in God to alleviate your sufferings. Don’t wait for others to help. Use your own motivation, which might be at its lowest, but persevere and win this battle. Above all to be really happy, you need to live in love and for love. Learn all about emotions and how to handle them and that will get you out of the depression rather easily and quickly. A counselor is there only to facilitate you, all the hard word must come from you, and your cooperation with that person is very critical for your success. Be positive every day and learn to be contented with what you have. Do some left brain exercises: it is the happy brain. Here are a few suggestions: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do calisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. Whatever happens please cooperate with the therapy and do not discontinue until the condition is completely resolved. As regards the concentration you are sure to have hormonal imbalances which may impact your memory because of the chemical but also the distractions that come with it; together with depression I can imagine your problems. But you may work on the following even if the hormones kick in: Daily exercise of at least half an hour is a must. Even if you go to a gym, ask for aerobic and/or callisthenic exercises with whatever else you are doing. A healthy body harbors a healthy mind. With regard to memory, it is very important that your brain and body is ideally rested to be able to recall whatever is required, rather comfortably. Puzzles pose problems to the brain that help it to use new pathways and neurons, which give the brain considerable exercise. It taxes the left brain to use logic to solve the myriad possibilities which other activities do not stimulate. Crosswords are excellent for vocabulary learning and use. Jigsaws and Rubik cube stimulate different permutations to finally settle on the most likely one. Picture completion and anagrams help approach problem solving from several angles. Do Sudoku, and memory co-relation activities and skills. Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber (whole grains, fruits and vegetables), nuts, avocado, eat dark chocolate, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. You need to check out if you are stronger visual or auditory. The visual is a better mode than the auditory. However, if you combine the two modes, you will get the best concentration. Have a special place of learning, which should be well lit, with soft painted walls, well-ventilated, with no distractions. When you get bored, study by writing. If you repeat learning at least five to seven times, you will apparently remember for a longer time. Sit comfortably but do not slouch. The reading material should be of a fairly large print. Study at small intervals of about 40 minutes and then take a break or change the subject. Short-term memory is a faculty of the left brain, and long-term memory is a feature of the right brain. When people are stressed, they tend to favor the right brain and abandon the left brain, where short-term memory resides. So, it is really very simple: deal with the stress and activate left brain functions. Here are a few suggestions to activate left brain function: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. There are some memory enhancing techniques and study methods that your teacher will be able to guide you with. If your home life is full of distractions and stress, it is likely to affect your memory, adversely. In that case, I suggest that the family goes for counseling.
