But it is extremely important for you to able to deal with it and start living a normal happy life again. It is extremely important for you to get a grip of your depression so that you can move on from it.

Here are a few tips on how you can handle it:

1. Believe you are not lonely: It is very easy to think that you are all alone in the pit of depression when you are depressed. But you have to remember that you are not lonely. What usually happens is you isolate yourself thinking that it will be extremely stressful if you have to share your depression with anyone else. You have to get rid of the feeling that apart from you, everyone else is extremely happy; because that is incorrect. Every person has been depressed and disturbed at one point of time. They are happy now because they overcame their depression. That is what you have to learn from them and do. Acknowledge that they are concerned about you.

2. Talk: This is very important if you want to let go of your depression. Talk it out with a therapist or a friend or anyone you are comfortable with. Know that they will hear whatever you have to say. All you have to do is speak. Talk about everything which is affecting you; talk about why you are depressed, about what you want to do. Talking will help you get some closure and insight.

3. Cry: Cry it out. It is better out than it is inside. Find a private, convenient place and cry your heart out. It will make you feel lighter and will take a burden off your heart.

4. Succumb to art: Whether that is painting, writing poetry, or playing music, any kind of art will help you bring your thoughts out. It is believed that depression and creativity usually go hand in hand. Utilize your condition to the fullest and you will be surprised to get a masterpiece out of it.

You have to remember that being depressed is just a phase. You will eventually be able get the upper hand on it and live a happy life.

Mental health is - mental/emotional wellbeing. Being mentally healthy means being peaceful from within, able to deal with life's challenges and manage emotions and relationships, etc.

There is a lot of misunderstanding about "mental health" and 60% of mentally sick or disturbed people are not taken to doctors or other mental health professionals. Instead, they are taken to astrologers or tantriks. Some are even punished for being crazy.

In today's highly stressful world, people do not have time to think and plan their lives. Because of modern lifestyles and nuclear families, people do not have outlets to share their feelings and express their intense emotions.

Sometimes emotional wounds like deep hurts, insults, neglect, shaming, physical and/or sexual abuse in childhood, may cause Personality or Behavioural disorders.

A person who loses temper for any small thing, or who is suspicious all the time or the one who breaks down or cries at slightest provocation, or who is jealous and possessive to the extent of being obsessed, or who is anxious all the time etc. needs to understand his/her feelings and find out the root cause of such feelings and behaviours.

Here are a few tips to develop/improve your mental health:

  1. Learn to express your feelings assertively
  2. Become aware of your own feelings and emotions
  3. Understand how to manage your emotions on day to day basis (anger, fear, jealousy, etc.)
  4. Review and nurture your relationships and infuse new life into them
  5. Periodically get rid of past baggage, deep hurts, spoilt relationships, unresolved issues, by resolving them in your mind
  6. Have a daily routine where your own needs and others' needs are balanced
  7. Reward yourself
  8. Develop positive attitude: focus on good events in life and positive affirmations.
  9. Introspect how often you succumb to negative emotions.
  10. Keep company of positive people
  11. Devise own methods for de-stressing
  12. Keep away from any kind of substance abuse.
  13. Have some routine exercise regime.
  14. Do not hesitate to seek professional help from - Counsellor/Psychiatrist/Psychologist

Hitting the gym and shedding a few pounds does good for health. Indeed, a person needs to do some exercise, in the gym or outside, to stay fit. But does that make a person completely healthy?

Health is a wholesome combination of physical and mental health. One needs to stay fit mentally as well as physically to stay completely healthy. Physical health and mental health are closely connected. In fact, good mental health can go a long way in ensuring good physical health.

Mental illnesses like anxiety, depression, etc. can affect the ability to participate in various social events. This can, in turn, give rise to various chronic diseases, and also bring down one's ability to recover from diseases. In a way, mental health is no less important than physical health. Satisfying emotional needs and cravings is also important, since that keeps the mental health strong.

One needs to attend to emotional needs. If a person doesn’t do that, the quality of life can suffer. A setback in quality of life can precipitate setbacks at work, as well as relationships.

All this can drag a person down in a spiral of emotional and consequent physical suffering.

What Is Implied by Mental Health?

Mental health refers to the overall psychological well-being of a person. It includes the way one feels about himself, the quality of his relationships, how he deals with difficulties as well as his ability to manage emotions and feelings.

Is Mental Health A Lesser Evil?

Mental health is not a lesser evil. The problem with mental health is that people usually take it for granted. The physical manifestation of a heart attack or a broken arm compels people to visit the doctor or get admission to a hospital. However, mental health problems rarely have such sudden emergency manifestations. There are symptoms, but people rarely ascribe an element of emergency to such symptoms. People don’t often recognize symptoms of mental health problems unless they are accompanied by physical symptoms.

Common Mental Health Problems with Physical Manifestations

Some mental health problems may show up as physical health problems. Problems like depression, stress, anxiety, etc. often give rise to fatigue, headaches, muscle tension, heartburn, stomach aches, lack of appetite, heart palpitations, insomnia, etc. Nevertheless, people often tend to disregard their emotional problems.

The Biggest Challenge

The biggest challenge is acknowledging the problem. Unfortunately, even at this age and time, mental health problems are associated with social stigma. This makes it difficult for people to acknowledge the problem and seek help to resolve it. In fact, people tend to interpret their own emotional problems as their weakness. This leads many people to seek solace and emotional well-being elsewhere. Most often their pursuit leads them to take alcohol and stay away from the problem. Little do they realize that alcohol cannot solve any problem, but can certainly lead to an increase in physical problems. The person needs to visit a psychologist to treat his mental health and not try to gulp down his feelings with glasses of alcohol.
