Oats Are Perfect For Breakfast - 7 Reasons That Support It!

One of the healthiest grains on earth; oats are gluten-free and an excellent source of minerals, fibers, vitamins and antioxidants. They are incredibly nutritious and one of the most preferred breakfast options. Owing to its healthy, super filling and nutritious properties, oats are on the top of any healthy diet chart.

Apart from being one of the best sources of soluble fibers, oats are also known to help in lowering cholesterol levels, reducing glucose absorption, relieving constipation, and decreasing the risk of childhood asthmaRead on to know about the benefits of eating oats for breakfast in detail:

  1. A nutritious and balanced breakfast option - Oats have well-balanced nutrients composition. They are an excellent source of proteins and contain very little fat as compared to other grains. They provide all the necessary nutrients, without added calories, to keep you going throughout the day.

  2. Contain soluble and insoluble fibers - Oats are packed with a large quantity of soluble fiber called beta-glucan, which helps control cholesterol levels and stabilizes glucose levels in the blood. Fibers also give you a feeling of fullness and increase the growth of good bacteria in the gut. Oats also contain insoluble fiber that improves intestinal health and fights constipation.

  3. Contain vitamins and minerals - Oats are also loaded with manganese, copper, iron, folate, vitamin B1 and B5, making an ideal option to start your day with. Eating 1 cup of oatmeal provides an ample amount of vitamin B complex to help your body convert food into energy. Iron content in the same serving helps meet 25 percent of a man’s and 11 percent of a woman’s daily requirement.

  4. Help lower cholesterol - One of the leading causes of death globally is heart disease for which the major risk factor is high cholesterol. Oats contain a beta-glucan fiber that is known to effectively reduce LDL cholesterol levels as well as total cholesterol levels. The antioxidants in oats also help in preventing LDL oxidation in the blood.

  5. Help in relieving constipation - With changes in eating habits, constipation has become very common in people of all age groups. As per studies, consuming oat bran daily can significantly improve gut health and relieve constipation. Especially for elderly patients, oat bran can be a nice alternative to laxatives (due to its side-effects).

  6. Help in managing weight - We all know that eating a filling breakfast in the morning can reduce the urge to eat throughout the day, hence, help in weight loss. This makes oatmeal an excellent breakfast option as it is not only delicious but also keeps you full for longer. Beta-glucan in oats increases the production of a satiety hormone called peptide YY (PPY), which leads to reduced calorie intake, thus helping in managing weight and reducing the risk of obesity.

  7. Reduce the risk of childhood asthma - Asthma is an inflammatory disorder of the airways. Symptoms may differ in every child; some may experience shortness of breath or wheezing, while other children may have a recurrent cough. According to various studies, introducing your child to solid food at an early age can increase the risk of developing asthma. Well, this does not apply to all foods, as introducing oats to an infant can actually lower the risk of developing childhood asthma.

Although oats don't contain gluten, in rare cases, they are grown in the same grounds as wheat or barley, and these crops can sometimes contaminate oats with gluten. Therefore, it is advised to pick oats that are certified as gluten-free. Having gone through all the health benefits of oats, it is proved that oats not only make a nutritious meal for you but your child as well. Go ahead, shake hands with oats and make them your perfect breakfast friend! In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

How Can A Vegan Diet Improve Your Health?

How Can A Vegan Diet Improve Your Health?

Veganism has gained immense popularity worldwide over the years. From celebrities and athletes to youngsters and fitness freaks – everyone is turning vegan these days. However, for those who are unfamiliar with the concept, a vegan diet excludes the consumption of any food that comes from animals – dairy, eggs, honey, gelatine, etc. Many of you must be wondering whether one should embrace the vegan lifestyle because clearly, the diet will not allow you to consume animal proteins, and you might think that you would miss out on the essential vitamins and minerals. However, recent studies state otherwise.

Health Benefits of a Vegan Diet

A vegan diet, which is low in saturated fat and salt, can benefit you in more ways than you could possibly imagine. The positive effects of being a vegan are numerous –

Vegetarian food is rich in fibres

• They are a good source of antioxidant food

• Vegetarian food are easy for digestion, absorption & assimilation activities

• Helps lose excess weight

• Regulates blood sugar levels

• Improves your kidney functioning

• Keeps cancer at bay

• Reduces the risk of heart ailments

• Helps reduce arthritis pain

• Promotes ‘good’ gut hormone

Researchers conducted a study on 60 participants to compare the effects of a plant-based meal with those of a meal rich in animal products. Out of the 60 participants, 20 people were diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, while the remaining 20 showed no signs of any health issues. The participants were split randomly into two groups. Some of them were given a vegan meal, which included tofu, and others were given cheese and processed meat to eat. Both the meals were matched for the quantum of macronutrients and calories.

Regardless of whether the participants had obesity, diabetes, or no health complications whatsoever, those who consumed a vegan meal showed an increased level of beneficial gut hormones than those who devoured meat and cheese. Beneficial gut hormones are the ones that help regulate blood sugar, energy levels, and insulin production. They also make you feel satiated, thus contributing to weight management. This is because plant-based meals are rich in fibre but do not add up to the extra calories.

What are the health risks of being a vegan?

Despite all the benefits stated above, a vegan diet does put you at certain health risks. You may be at risk of deficiency of iron, calcium, zinc, vitamins D and B12, omega 3 fatty acids etc. However, that does not mean a vegan diet is unhealthy and that your carnivorous counterparts are leading a healthier lifestyle. It only means that you should look out for vegan food sources that will substitute the animal proteins and vitamins. Incorporate vegan proteins like tofu, chickpeas, green peas, lentils, seitan and tempeh in your diet. Eat lots of veggies and fruits, seeds and nuts, pulses and whole grains. You may also include vitamin supplements suited for your diet. Therefore, if you are looking to embrace veganism, you must ensure that you receive enough of these vital nutrients through plant-based food sources. Turning vegan is a big step for many, especially if you have been a hard-core non-vegetarian for years. It may sound bland and boring; nevertheless, remind yourself of the umpteen benefits and you will feel motivated to make the switch!

How To Motivate People To Lose Weight Effectively?

Losing weight can turn out to be a difficult and long process if you do not get support from your surroundings. Here are some ways to motivate people looking to lose weight effectively.

  • Encourage them to eat healthy

Many people fail to lose weight because they cannot control their cravings and end up eating unhealthy snacks. There is also a lack of awareness among people. You can take the responsibility of spreading the knowledge of the harmful effects of such kind of food items. Advise them on quitting unhealthy eating habits and switch to healthier food options, like fresh fruits and veggies, nuts and seeds, whole grains and legumes.

  • Encourage them to exercise

You can motivate others to adopt an active lifestyle. If someone is struggling to lose weight, you can ask them to practice cardio and aerobic exercise. Activities like swimming, cycling, jogging, and running are very effective to burn calories. You can also tell them to join a gym. If they do not have the time for that, you can advise them to take the stairs, walk and do basic household chores.

  • Become an active participant

You can take membership in a gym, practice cardio exercise, and eat the dishes that they are preparing. This will provide them with encouragement and will be beneficial for your own health.

  • Listen to them

You should be supportive of the person who is trying to lose weight. Do not let them be too harsh on themselves. Listen to all of their struggles patiently. If they have not achieved the goal, ask them to start again.

  • Give them the advice to maintain a food journal

Keeping a food journal has proved to be beneficial for some people. You can encourage others to write down their daily calorie consumption and plan a diet chart with the help of a specialist.

If a person follows these tips with a positive attitude, then he/she can turn out to be helpful to that person who is attempting to lose weight.

Hello, thanks for the query. I have sen the given information, from which it is clear that current medication is not helping in controlling blood glucose effectively. There is a need to upgrade the treatment, plus we will have to look closely to the diet, extent of daily exercises, weight and height details. Then only a proper treatment plan can be finalsed. Because just adding some drugs or changing those is not the treatment at all. If you are keen the please come back with following details: current fasting, pp glucose, hba1c%, weight, height, extent of daily exercise, dietary pattern in details, lipid profile & bp readings, preferably in a private conversation (paid consultation) then I will be able to give specific guidance and even prescribe the necessary drugs if required. In this communication we are supposed to give only general guidelines, no drugs can be prescribed. If not then please contact your local diabetologist and get the upgrade dome. I await your response. Closing Holes In The Heart!

Closing Holes In The Heart!

Many children are born with Atrial Septal Defect, a condition which is popularly known as holes in the heart. It is a major concern for most parents, but, thankfully it can be treated very easily. None of the parents wants their child to undergo hospitalization and the resulting pain that treatments might incur. However, the good news is all kinds of heart holes do not need to be closed by surgery at all. Many a time the holes are filled over time naturally and the child only needs to be under medical observation that’s all.

Catheter Procedure
In case a surgery needs to be performed, given the hole(s) in your child’s heart is medium to large sized, the surgeon makes sure that the procedure is painless. One of the commonest surgeries is one that involves the use of a catheter. Here, a catheter is attached to an umbrella-shaped device (a disk) and the apparatus is inserted through the groin region. The device is designed to reach your child’s heart and attach a disk to the hole, thereby filling it. When the process reaches completion the catheter is taken out of the body. The good thing about this surgery is that by six months natural tissues grow over the surgical site and re-operation is not required.

Open Heart Surgery
Another type of surgery that is performed to treat Atrial Septal Defect is open heart surgery. This is only carried out only when the condition is serious. In this surgery too, the child is given medications that allow him/her to sleep throughout the procedure. Using a bypass machine the surgeons opens the heart and while the surgery is on, this machine imitates the pumping of the heart. The surgeon then uses a patch like a device to seal off the hole(s). Post surgery the child is discharged from the hospital within a week. There will be some guidelines that the concerned doctor might acquaint you with pertaining to the post-treatment care of the child. He/she might prepare a diet chart for your child.

Ventricular Septal Defect
Ventricular Septal Defect is a condition where a hole develops around the wall which separates the lower chambers of the heart. In most cases, the hole closes in on its own. If the hole is medium or large sized, surgery will be performed. With surgery, your child would go back to leading a normal life. It is just that you need to take special care of his/her diet. The doctor might recommend foods that are high in calories. Make sure you follow the doctor’s advice properly and watch your child going back to bounding and playing like other children in no time.
