Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) - What Are The Symptoms?

The coronary arteries supply the heart with oxygen-enriched blood and nutrients. If these arteries become damaged or diseased; they could cause Coronary artery disease or CAD. Plaque deposits on the walls of the arteries are the most common cause of this disease. This plaque is usually the result of high cholesterol levels. As the plaque builds up, the passage of blood flow is reduced. This reduces the amount of blood that reaches the heart. In cases of a complete blockage, CAD can even cause a heart attack. Because of its slow progression, this disease is often not diagnosed until it reaches a dangerous stage. However, it can be prevented and treated if diagnosed in time.

 

 


In the early stages of CAD, symptoms are not very noticeable. Symptoms become visible only when blood flow tCoronary Artery Diseaseo the heart reduces and the heart has to pump harder than normal. The most common symptoms experienced include:

 

 

  1. Chest Pain: This is also referred to as angina. It may feel like a tightening of the chest or pressure on the chest as though someone is pressing against it. This type of chest pain may be triggered by emotional or physical stress. It is usually relieved within a few minutes of stopping the activity. Women may experience this pain as a sharp, fleeting pain in the back, arm or neck.
  2. Breathlessness: When the heart does not receive enough blood, it has to work harder to pump blood through the body. This may be translated to breathlessness of shortness of breath when performing any type of physical activity. It can also cause extreme fatigue.
  3. Heart Attack: A heart attack is the most severe symptom of coronary artery disease. This is caused by the complete blockage of a coronary artery. A heart attack can occur without any symptoms or be preceded by slight symptoms. The signs of an impending heart attack include pain in the chest and shoulder, shortness of breath and extreme sweating. The chest pain may also travel to the lower jaw. These symptoms are more pronounced in men as compared to women. Women have a higher tendency of experiencing atypical signs such as extreme fatigue.

Other symptoms that might indicate coronary artery disease are dizziness, nausea and an irregular heartbeat. The good news is that this disease can be prevented. The CAD (Coronary Artery Disease) is a condition where the blood flow in your arteries is impaired. This happens when the blood vessels that supply blood to your heart are damaged. As a result, plaque builds up in the arteries and the blood flow to the heart is decreased.

This will eventually lead to chest pain or angina and other symptoms. If the arteries are blocked completely, you may suffer a heart attack later on. It is one of the leading causes of death and heart attacks all over the world.

What are the causes of CAD?

The CAD may be caused due to an injury to the inner part of the coronary artery. This may be due to the following factors – 

If the inner wall of the artery is damaged, deposits made of cholesterol and other cellular wastes are collected in the region. The process is called atherosclerosis. If this plaque surface breaks, the platelets in your blood will try to fix the artery. In the process, these platelets are accumulated in the area. Too much accumulation can block the artery.

As the arteries are responsible for providing oxygen-rich blood to your heart, blockage in the region will lead to a heart attack.

Moreover, Coronary Artery Disease may be caused if you have a family history of heart diseases. It is more likely to occur when you are over 65 years of age. Factors such as obesity and high levels of stress can also lead to this condition.   

Symptoms

The common symptom of Coronary Artery Disease is angina or pain in the chest. However, the condition may be accompanied by other symptoms, like –

  • Tightness, heaviness, burning or a squeezing sensation in the chest

  • Sweating

  • Dizziness

  • Shortness of breath followed by extreme fatigue

  • Pain in the arms, shoulders or the back

  • Severe pressure in the shoulders and arms that lead to heart attack

The angina symptoms are commonly misunderstood as symptoms of indigestion. Be aware and seek medical assistance immediately.

Treating CAD with Ayurveda 

The following Ayurvedic herbs are helpful for preventing the deposits of harmful fats in your blood vessels –

  • Combination of herbs like Amlaki, Arjuna, Punarnava, Kutki and Triphala

Another important treatment procedure for the disease, as prescribed by Ayurveda, is meditation. Meditating for about 20 minutes every day will help you relax and calm your nerves. It will help you enhance your mental health and happiness. This will keep your heart healthy.

To prevent risks of CAD, you must exercise regularly and avoid consuming foods high in fats and sugar. Reduce the amount of preserved foods. Eat more fresh fruits and vegetable daily. Furthermore, get plenty of sleep and stop consuming alcohol or cigarettes to stay healthy.

Coronary artery disease or CAD is the name given to the heart condition in which the major blood vessels that supply your heart with blood, oxygen and nutrients, also called coronary arteries, get blocked, damaged or diseased.

  1. Blockages usually happen when cholesterol-containing deposits called plaque deposit in your arteries. Plaque narrows the lumen of your coronary artery which means your heart gets lesser and lesser oxygen and nutrients to function properly.
  2. Inflammation is also to blame for coronary artery disease.

Common symptoms of CAD include

When you go to a heart specialist, she will ask questions about your medical history and follow it up with a physical exam and order routine blood and diagnostic tests to confirm CAD like:

  1. Electrocardiogram (ECG): An ECG records electrical signals as they travel through your heart revealing evidence of a previous heart attack or one that’s happening. Holter monitoring is a type of ECG where you wear a portable monitor for 24 hours as you go about your normal daily activities. Abnormalities in the results suggest reduced blood flow to the heart signaling CAD.
  2. Echocardiogram:  This test uses sound waves to produce images of your heart. It helps your doctor determine whether all parts of your heart wall are contributing to your heart's pumping activity. If certain parts are moving weakly it can mean damage to muscle due to a heart attack or because of receiving too little oxygen- again signaling CAD.
  3. Exercise Stress test: This test is done by making you do exercises like walking on a treadmill or riding a stationary bike during an ECG. Sometimes, medication to stimulate your heart may be used instead of exercise.

This again detects areas in your heart that receive less blood flow.

  • Cardiac catheterization or angiogram. A special dye is injected into your coronary arteries to observe blood flow through your heart in a test known as an angiogram.
  • The dye is sometimes also injected into the arteries through a long, thin, flexible tube called catheter that is threaded through an artery in your leg to the arteries in your heart. This procedure is called cardiac catheterization. This test is very good in diagnosing CAD as the dye outlines narrow spots and blockages on the X-ray images of your heart.
  • Heart scans. Computerized tomography or CT can help your doctor actually see calcium deposits in your arteries that can be narrowing your arteries. If a substantial amount of calcium deposits are found, coronary artery disease could be the reason.
  • MRI scans are also done to diagnose CAD. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Cardiologist.

Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty - What Should You Know?

Angioplasty is a medical procedure used to restore blood flow in the arteries. It allows the blood to flow easily by treating the blocked arteries. Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty or PTCA is used to unblock coronary arteries and to reinstate smooth arterial blood circulation to the heart tissues. This can avoid the treatment of heart condition through open-heart surgery.

Usually, CAD or Coronary Artery Disease and Atherosclerosis are treated with Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty or PTCA. CAD is caused when the arteries in the heart get blocked, which may lead to congestive heart failure, angina or heart attack. Atherosclerosis is a progressive condition in which plaque is developed and accumulated in the inner layer which leads to artery losing its elasticity and making the wall of artery thick.

Procedure

A long hollow tube called a catheter with a small balloon at its tip is introduced inside the blocked coronary artery. The balloon is inflated after catheter has been placed into the blocked part of the coronary artery. The inflation of the balloon helps compress the fatty tissues in the artery. This forms a sizeable opening for better blood flow inside the treated artery. There are several other procedures that one might need to go through depending upon various factors, such as severity and other health issues. A special kind of X-ray, known as Fluoroscopy, is used to help the doctor locate the blockage in the coronary artery with the movement of contrast dye in the artery. Biopsy may also be performed to get a small sample of heart tissue to be tested later for any abnormality.

IVUS or Intravascular Ultrasound is used to help visualize and measure the inside of the blood vessels. This may help the surgeon to decide the most suitable balloon size and/or stents to ensure if it is correctly opened or to access other angioplasty instruments. IVUS includes a computer and a transducer which uses ultrasonic sound waves to develop images of blood vessels. Surgeon will go through a detailed examination to establish if there’s a need of performing PTCA. There might be a need of Atherectomy or to remove plaque at the location of a narrowed or blocked artery.

Takeaway

Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty or PTCA is a medical procedure to unblock the coronary artery which helps in improving the flow of blood to the heart tissues. Usually, Atherosclerosis and CAD are treated using PTCA. The instruments and procedures are determined by the medical team depending on the severity of the condition. Let’s start with the elephant in the room, which is medically known as myocardial infarction or referred to as the infamous heart attack. This occurs when the muscle cells, which are located in the heart die on account of not enough blood flowing through the heart. In simple terms, the best way to get to know that one is having a heart attack is when the person feels a seriously crushing pain in the centre or the left side of the chest. What could be said to be unique about this type of pain is that resting does not make it better.

  3. That being said, a heart attack is a greater possibility. The pain in the chest could spread to the jaw or the back, or even the arm. The sensation is that of the body part being squeezed. The first thing to be done when angina occurs is to rest in order to lower the pain.
  4. While these conditions have focused on the heart, pneumonia affecting the lungs can cause deep chest ache. It causes a cough and chills. There is also likely to be pus from the respiratory tract which is coughed up!
  5. Asthma is yet another respiratory issue which could cause chest pain!
