Picture-Perfect Skin - How To Attain It?

Picture-Perfect Skin - How To Attain It?

The radiant, glowing skin that stares at us from the billboards and hoardings may be extremely artificial, but it definitely absorbs in us a desire to achieve better skin. This is not restricted to just young girls, but also adults refusing to accept the changes that age brings with it. Many want to look younger far younger than their ages.

While there is no trick that will do the magic, there are definitely some things to follow which can help you achieve a picture-perfect skin:

  1. Laser resurfacing: The top layers of the skin need to make way for the fresh layers, which grow from below. This keeps the skin fresh and young in appearance. However, when there is too much of old skin at the top, it ends up appearing dull and lifeless. Laser resurfacing uses a beam of laser where the top layers are removed and the underlying layers are stimulated, so fresh skin is produced. This will need to be repeated at regular intervals.

  2. Chemical peels: Though the concept remains the same as above, chemicals are used to remove the top layers instead of a laser. This could, for instance, include salicylic acid, lactic acid, glycolic acid, etc. The mild acids induce as well as irritate the skin. They are, however, naturally present in the skin and therefore preferred sometimes.

  3. Botox: This prevents ageing by relaxing the facial nerve endings. When the brain does not receive a signal from the skin, it continues to remain as is (minus the ageing). This is a huge trend and many people swear by this. This is especially useful in women who want to curtail the ageing effects including crow’s feet, and fine lines at the nose and forehead. These need to be repeated at regular intervals.

  4. Vampire facelift: The platelet-rich plasma, an elixir extracted from your own blood studded with millions of growth factors when injected into your skin, gives younger looking lifted and radiant skin with less wrinkles, dark spots and other signs of ageing.

  5. Spider vein treatment: If you have spider veins or small veins on your face that are thought to be unsightly, this could be the answer.

In addition to all the above procedures, the following tips never go out of trend and always provide great results:

  1. Keep the skin clean – never go to sleep with makeup on
  2. Regularly exfoliate the skin
  3. Use sunscreen adequately to minimize damage from the sun.
  4. Adequately moisturize the skin to avoid dryness
  5. Use natural products like turmeric, milk cream, lime, honey, fruit packs
  6. Eat fresh vegetables and fruits
  7. Avoid oily, junk, processed foods
  8. Exercise well
  9. Ensure a good night’s sleep

Sleep Disorders - How To Handle Them In Children?

Sleep Disorders - How To Handle Them In Children?

Sleep problems, which can be defined as a sleeping pattern where the parents are unsatisfied, are one of the leading concerns of parents. Children should get a minimum of nine hours of sleep so that their health and brain development can occur. Sleep problems can affect not only their health but also their social and school life. Any interruption or abnormality in a child's sleeping patterns should be examined by a doctor and parents should make necessary efforts for knowing the actual causes of sleep interruption of their kids.

What are the causes of sleep disorders in children?

  1. Injuries and accidents
  2. Behavioural troubles
  3. Overeating
  4. Slow-reaction times
  5. Performance problems
  6. Mood problems
  7. Learning, concentration and memory troubles

Commonest signs of sleep troubles in kids:

  1. Difficulty in falling asleep
  2. The occurrence of unusual events at the time of sleeping like nightmares or sleep-walking
  3. Snoring and breathing pauses
  4. Difficulty in staying awake in daylight
  5. Daytime performances can be adversely affected

Best methods for dealing with sleep disorders in children:

  1. Regular bed-timing should be sincerely maintained at night.
  2. Relaxing routine for bedtime needs to be followed, including story-book reading, getting a warm bath and others.
  3. Noise in the house, especially at night, should be minimized so that unwanted disturbances can be eliminated.
  4. If the room temperature is pretty comfortable, then your kids can sleep peacefully.
  5. Giving caffeine in excess quantity, especially before sleeping, should be reduced otherwise the kids will not sleep well.
  6. Meals should not be provided just before bedtime; rather they should be taken a few hours before sleeping.
  7. If your kids are so very addicted to different electronic gadgets or devices like telephones, televisions, computers and others, then they might face sleeping troubles. Thus, it is your duty to keep your kids away from this kind of addiction.
  8. If your kids are too very tired, then do not keep them awake forcibly; rather you should make them sleep immediately so that they can get a relaxed sleep at night.

If you think that sleep disorder has become a serious issue with your kids as well, then nothing can be a better option than consulting any health physician. They can best analyse the underlying cause of this issue with your kids.

Excessive Sleepiness - Is It A Psychiatric Disorder?

Excessive Sleepiness - Is It A Psychiatric Disorder?

Hyper somnolence or hypersomnia is a condition that leads to constant daytime fatigue and drowsiness as well as prolonged night time sleeps. In this condition, the patient will usually go through repeated bouts of sleep, which he or she will not be able to resist without proper treatment and intervention. This condition makes patients take naps throughout the day even after a long and unhindered sleep throughout the night. Patterns of excessive drowsiness will begin to set in at the most inopportune times including meal times and even in the middle of a conversation. While there is no scientifically or medically proven cause for the onset of this ailment, it is known to affect adolescents more than adults. Read on to know more about the symptoms and treatment of this condition.

Symptoms: The patients suffering from this condition will experience a variety of other symptoms in addition to the constant state of drowsiness. These symptoms include anxiety, which may even go to a severe level if it is not treated properly and on time. Also, the patient may experience restlessness and a sense of increased irritation even in the most normal, everyday situations due to a perceived lack of sleep and constant state of drowsiness. Loss of appetite and hallucinations may also begin to plague patients who suffer from this condition on a chronic and prolonged basis without proper treatment. Slow thinking and slow speech are other symptoms that will start to set in with time as well.

Social Situations: In many social and personal situations, the patient may begin to lose basic functionality because of the constant urge to sleep. The patient’s interactions on a social platform may begin to deteriorate due to the lack of coherent thinking and speaking as well as the sense of irritability and restlessness displayed.

Medication: In most cases, it is best to go about this condition by treating the symptoms with medication prescribed by a doctor. The doctor may prescribe stimulant medication that will help in keeping the system awake for longer periods at a time. The doctor will also stress on the time of the day when these must be ingested so that nighttime sleep is not affected in any way. These medicines include amphetamines, which are usually prescribed for patients suffering from ADHD or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. This medicine is usually given in controlled doses so as to keep the patient alert for longer periods of time. Other medicines include clonidine, antidepressants, bromocriptine, monoamine oxidase inhibitors and levodopa.

Therapy: Behavioural therapy is also known to make a marked difference in such cases, which helps in regulating and normalizing sleep patterns.

I use thyogear 62.5 mg for thyroid. But now thyronorm is available on medical store. Can I use thyronorm or it may lead to any problem by changing it?

Hello, thanks for the query. Both brands are containing levothyroxine only. So you can change if there is a need. However, it is better if you stick with one particular brand of levothyroxine. Do not keep changing. Thanks.

At your age this claim is serious. If you have depression and anxiety then there are some major ramifications to take into account. I believe there may be some genetic predisposition or there has been some childhood issue, related to anger and fear, that needs urgent attention. You must go and meet with a counselor immediately and the doctor too and cooperate to your utmost. Please visit these professionals along with your parents. In the meantime please do the following sincerely because you could resolve the problem better with good cooperation: have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber, nuts, avocado, exercise regularly, eat dark chocolate, do yoga meditation exercises, spend time in nature or gardening, etc. I suggest you do the opposite of what this depression makes you feel like doing (actually, not doing): you will need to fight this condition. You must become active; stay upright during the daylight time; meet people; never sleep during the day, wake up by 6 am every day, play some active games, especially contact games, do physical exercises, talk to people and join some social clubs, attend yoga classes etc. Watch sitcoms on tv or comedies and cheer yourself up. Go for excursions in groups, for outings, camps, conferences, and religious conventions. Get a pet dog and spend time training it, exercising it and relating to it. Expose yourself to some sunlight every day, at least, 30 minutes but not in the scorching heat. Whatever happens, please incorporate these three important adaptations in your life: always be responsible, be respectful, and be functional. If you did these three, lots of things will go well in life. Please pray and have faith in god to alleviate your sufferings. Don’t wait for others to help. Use your own motivation, which might be at its lowest, but persevere and win this battle. Above all to be really happy, you need to live in love and for love. Learn all about emotions and how to handle them and that will get you out of the depression rather easily and quickly. A counselor is there only to facilitate you, all the hard word must come from you, and your cooperation with that person is very critical for your success. Be positive every day and learn to be contented with what you have. Whatever happens please cooperate with the therapy and do not discontinue until the condition is completely resolved.

Mental Problems - How To Avoid It In Old Age?

Mental Problems - How To Avoid It In Old Age?

Older people are at a higher risk of developing mental disorders as with age the neurology of the brain tends to deteriorate. Various physical illnesses such as chronic pain and bone disorders which are common in older people can restrict their ability to live an independent life. Most of the diseases that affect older people tend to require long term care.

Other causes of mental disorders are events like the death of near ones, disabilities or a reduction in socioeconomic status. These factors can make them isolated and lonely leading to psychological problems in the elderly. Physical diseases such as heart problems may also lead to mental problems.

With respect to the above points, you may follow these pointers to stay away from mental disorders

1. Physical exercise
It is very important to stay active as it has multiple health benefits. A sedentary lifestyle increases the risk of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases in the body. In case of movement restrictions, focus on doing simple activities like walking and moving about as a replacement for regular exercise.

2. Food
Food is important to mental health as they provide the necessary nutrients to the body. Add almonds to your diet as they contain vitamin B6 which is very good for the brain. Omega 3 and Omega 6 acids in almonds also contribute to brain health. Eat a diet that is low in fat, focus on simple and natural foods.

3. Communicate
Take up a hobby or participate in social gatherings to get more involved with people. These activities will keep your mind occupied and stimulate your brain. It will reduce the risks of depression and related disorders.

4. Remove negative emotions
Try to avoid negative emotions as they are the major source of depression. Take up meditation as their effect on improving mental health is well known. Focus on the positives in every experience to be content and happy. Negative emotions can lead to serious mental problems such as depression and anxiety disorders.

Fevers, cold and cough, loss of appetite varying temperature, etc. These are bodies ways to fast and recuperate on its own. Wet packs on whole body or just the hot areas in every five minutes for 30 mins to be done 6 times a day. Only feed them water or coconut water and no other food for one whole day. This is body fasting naturally to heal itself. And lots of rest, rest is very important and no screen time. It will help if you did not administer any medicines for this one day or maximum two and continue doing the aforementioned tasks for day two too. In emergency administer one drop of lycopodium 30 in one spoon of water, only once. This should not be repeated.

Q-Switched Laser - What Should You Know?

Q-Switched Laser - What Should You Know?

A Q-switched laser is a non-invasive laser, which emits high-intensity pulsed beam light, and is used as a treatment for dermatological conditions. The laser beams are powerful enough to shatter small fragments of ink or pigmentation and stimulate the production of collagen.

Q-switched lasers, with advanced technology, can be used to rectify the following conditions –

Tattoo removal
• Treatment of toenail fungus
• Sunspots
Age Spots
• Freckles
Birthmarks
Moles
• Spider veins
• Angiomas
Skin rejuvenation
• Port wine stains

Each type of dermatological condition is treated with a different type of Q-switched lasers.

Types of Q-switched lasers:

The most commonly used Q-switched lasers are –

• Q-switched Nd – YAG laser is used in laser toning, freckles, pigmentation, etc.
• Alexandrite Laser – Used for hair removal

How does laser treatment work?

The laser energy pulse releases the pigment into the skin so your body can reabsorb and discard it naturally. The laser energy may feel like several tiny hot dots tingling on the skin. However, the discomfort is reduced when a stream of cold air is directed at these spots immediately after the procedure.

If you are opting for Q-switched laser treatment for tattoo removal, you will likely be given anaesthetics on the particular area because the procedure is rather painful.

Benefits of Q-switched Laser Treatment:

The benefits of modern Q-switched laser treatment are umpteen. Here are a few ways the procedure will prove advantageous to you –

• Helps tighten loose, sagging skin
• Improves facial appearance by removing wrinkles and fine lines
• Gives your self-esteem a boost as stretch marks and birthmarks are eliminated
• Helps you get rid of skin conditions and improves skin tone
• A trusted treatment approach for tattoo and hair removal
• The results are long-lasting, usually three years
• Does not involve severe complications or side effects
• A single machine used to treat a range of skin conditions
• Non-invasive, painless procedure
• Can be used in combination with other cosmetic procedures

What to Expect after the Treatment?

Following the treatment, you can expect a few cuts and bruises on the area that has been treated. To speed up healing, your doctor or dermatologist may recommend petroleum jelly or plain Vaseline that you will need to apply on the treated area and cover it with bandages for a couple of days. Full recovery takes about a few days to 2 weeks, depending on the area being treated.

Q-switch laser treatment is a breakthrough procedure in the field of dermatology. If you are considering going for the treatment, talk to your doctor and discuss the details of the procedure beforehand.
