Increasing Pollution - How To Protect Our Self?

Increasing Pollution - How To Protect Our Self?

If you’ve read the newspaper recently, you would undoubtedly have read about the alarming air pollution levels. Whether it is of exhaust fumes from cars and factories or smoke from burning stubble; air pollution is a cause of great concern. The effects of this can be seen in the growing number of asthma and other respiratory diseases. These diseases affect adults and children alike, however, it is the younger generation and elderly people are most susceptible.

How does Pollution affect your health?
When it comes to air pollution, particulate matter is the greatest worry. This can be described as a mixture of solid and liquid particles that remain suspended in the air. Inhaling air with this particulate matter leads to their deposition on the lining of the respiratory tubes and organs. This can hinder the normal functioning of the respiratory system and act as catalysts for reactions that can harm your health. Along with the lungs, inhaling this particulate matter can also affect the heart and other organs. It also increases susceptibility to allergic reactions and diseases such as asthma.

Protecting yourself from air pollution
Simply talking about how there need to be stricter laws about car emissions and the burning of waste will not help you. Here are a few things you can do to protect yourself and your family from the ill-effects of air pollution.

  1. Carpool: Exhausts from cars and other vehicles are one of the biggest causes of air pollution. Do your part to reduce air pollution by restricting the amount you use your car. Try taking public transport to work or carpool with colleagues. Similarly, avoid making individual trips every time you need something from the market. Make a list and when it’s long enough, then step out.

  2. Limit indoor pollution: Do not smoke indoors. When cooking, keep the exhaust fan on so that the smoke produced does not collect indoors. Avoid spraying air fresheners, etc. While they may temporarily make the air smell fresh, in the long run, they contribute towards air pollution.

  3. Check the weather before you step out: Just as you can see the daily temperature on your phone, a number of sites also tell you the pollution levels in your city. Avoid stepping out in the early morning and during peak traffic hours as this is when pollution levels are highest. When the air pollution levels are high, keep your windows closed as well.

  4. Cover your nose: Invest in a face mask. This will help filter the air you breathe and keep particulate matter from entering your system.

Day Hunger - How To Manage It?

Day Hunger - How To Manage It?

Many people feel hungry throughout the day. They are lethargic until they lay their hands on food. These sessions of hunger go on like a vicious circle and if not resisted it can lead to health issues.

Some ways are given below to prevent unnecessary hunger:

  1. A high- fibre diet can prevent unnecessary hunger - Your diet should be rich in fibre. The body takes a longer span of time to digest fibre-rich food. It also makes you feel full for hours together. Having fibre will keep your bowel movements in control and is therefore healthy. Remember to add extra fibre to your bowl of cereals or salad to keep pangs of hunger at bay.

  2. Divide one heavy meal into two smaller meals - Eating heavy meals and that too less frequently is really bad for your health. This can make you feel hungry time and again. To control the constant rumbling inside your tummy, you should divide one big meal into two or more smaller meals. For instance, if you were supposed to eat sandwiches, boiled eggs and soup for lunch, you should probably eat sandwiches at noon and eat the soup and eggs any time later in the day.
  3. Never be a fast eater - Jumping on your food is the worst way of tackling things. Research studies show how a human brain takes more than twenty minutes to tell your body it is full and satisfied. If you don't wish to overeat throughout the day, you must consume your food slowly. This way the brain takes more time in realizing it is full and thus further time in feeling subsequent hunger.

  4. Eat sufficiently during mealtime - Many tend to eat inadequately during mealtime and as soon as they are done with their food they feel hungry. It is important to fill yourself sufficiently when you are already eating. A person snacking on carrots and corns can keep away from binge eating.

  5. Drink more glasses of water - Every person should drink around three to four litres of water. Drinking water half an hour after a meal can keep your gustatory concerns in check for long. Water keeps you hydrated, helps in digestion and controls unnecessary hunger.

  6. Eat a good amount of protein - Protein makes you full in very little time and thus doesn't need to be consumed in great quantities. It will make you feel content for long as your blood sugar levels are in balance through protein consumption. Protein takes time to be digested.

People are often seen biting their nails in situations mostly when they are nervous or scared. But this habit of nail-biting is dangerous to health. Nail-biting in medical term known as onychophagy or onychophagia, is a sign of tumult and confusion, which leads to nervousness. This habit also disrupts the natural growth of nails. Biting your nails helps the germs and bacteria enter directly into your mouth. This is the reason, we were taught as kids to wash hands properly with soap before meals.

Reasons why you must stop nail-biting:

1. Presenting your nervousness in front of everyone in a way decreases the chance of getting selected for an interview. It shows a lack of confidence in you.
2. Causes germs and bacteria to enter directly into your mouth, which can later cause many infections.
3. Causes nail to grow unevenly or with bumpy chine.
4. The problem of an ingrown nail is raised through this habit, and in the worse situation, the problem is remedied only through surgery.
5. Biting nails not only spoils the shape of nails, but the nail polish you've applied is also toxic, if swallowed.
6. Biting nails also causes hangnails, and at times resulting in painful peeling of your finger skin.

Now that you are aware of the harmful effects of biting nails, here are few tips to help you in avoiding this habit:

1. Self-control: You need to have some restraint on yourself. By continually reminding yourself not to bite your nail, will eventually make you stop this habit.
2. Keep yourself busy: Often people start biting their nails, and they aren't even aware of this habit. Keeping yourself busy helps you to forget all about it, and helps to avoid such addiction.
3. Start using chewing gum, another useful trick for stopping yourself biting your nails.
4. Changing behavior patterns can help you to stay confident and get rid of nervousness, resulting in no nail-biting.

Conclusion:
As per study, it has been found that almost 70% of people have the habit of biting nails in some of the other situations. But with the above discussions, the fact is that nail-biting is dangerous not only for your hands, but also for your oral health. Taking into consideration, the above-mentioned tips, and following them can help you to get rid of this habit. It will take some time for you to stop this bad habit of nail biting, depending on how deep you are into this habit. But the fact is that, it will inevitably save you from many diseases, which are caused by bacteria and germs. It will also give your nails an even growth and beautiful appearance.

Mr Jagadish, Thanks for the query. When some one is on treatment with adequate dosage of Levothyroxine, TSH is maintained around 3 to 4 mU/L, at which level most of the symptoms are in check. TSH 5.3 mU/L means the dosage being taken is not enough, needs to be increased by 12.5 mcg per day. Then check TSH after 6 weeks to see if desired level is achieved. Plus the symptoms that you are mentioning are suggesting that hypothyroidism is not under control. Stopping the medicine is a wrong option, that will lead to severe hypothyroidism. Another aspect to be remembered is that hypothyroidism is a hormone (Thyroxine) deficiency disorder, hence this hormone needs to be supplemented every day for lifetime. If you have any questions please do come back.Thanks.

4 Causes Of Diaper Rash

4 Causes Of Diaper Rash

Your baby's skin is soft and sensitive. Being cautious can reduce the chances of skin infections, but it doesn't in any way refute the possibility altogether. Hence, you must be overly careful. Your baby could face intense discomfort if you happen to neglect the appearance of diaper rashes. Persistent rashes on your baby's bottom can make him or her irritable. Look into the causes and remedies of diaper rash in children to keep your baby cheerful.

Causes of Diaper Rash in Babies:

  1. Friction and lack of air circulation between the skin and the diaper can make your baby suffer from rashes. Make sure the baby doesn't rub against a diaper for too long; existing rashes can go worse in that case.
  2. You should never let your child remain in a dirty diaper for more than a while. A dirty diaper increases the risk of bacterial infections on your baby's bottom.
  3. Skin chafing could also be the reason behind diaper rashes.
  4. Yeast infections could surface in the form of rashes on a baby's bottom. Yeast or fungus is present in small amounts in every person's body. It can be easily developed in the moist yet warm atmosphere of a child's diaper. Being the mother, if you are on medications, your child's chances of contracting skin rashes is likely to be more. The side effects show in children as they are breastfed.

Ways to Treat Diaper Rash in Babies:

  1. Each time a diaper is changed; the area must be washed with lukewarm water and cleaned with a soft piece of cloth. The area should then be dried completely. It is best to avoid soaps as they can be harsh on sensitive skin.
  2. Applying ointments or petroleum jelly can soothe diaper rash. Powder can keep the area dry; it can also remedy itching.
  3. Feed your child liquids like cranberry juice; it makes his or her urine less concentrated. Concentrated urine can cause severe bacterial infection.
