Excessive Oily Hair - 5 Home Remedies To Cure This Problem!

Excessive oil production on the scalp can hamper the health of hair. Oil production is a natural process undertaken by the scalp to provide nourishment to hair. Oil production also provides protection to the scalp from harmful external factors. However, when there is an excess accumulation of oil on the scalp, it can lead to a condition called seborrheic dermatitis. In this condition, there is a presence of numerous red patches on the scalp in addition to the excess dandruff growth.

There are various causative factors that play a role in the development of an oily scalp. If the humidity level in the environment is high, then it is likely to cause an oily scalp. Dandruff production is also increased in humid weather conditions. During the summer season, people usually experience greasy hair. Excessive use of the hair conditioner can also be a big cause of an oily scalp. Also, the use of leave-on in excess can give rise to an oily scalp. Other causes include nutritional deficiencies, specifically Vitamin B and C deficiency, excess shampooing of hair, chronic dandruff problem, hormonal disorders and improper or less hair washing.

A person may find it difficult to maintain an excess oil-free scalp even after washing hair on a regular basis. Not only does it hamper the health of the scalp, but it also affects the self-esteem of the person. To get rid of this condition, there are several home remedies which can be very effective. 5 well-known home remedies for treating an excessively oily scalp are as follows:

1. Apple cider vinegar - It has pH controlling properties, which help to regulate the pH of the scalp. Rinsing the scalp with apple cider vinegar helps to control the excessive secretion of oil on the scalp. 2-3 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar can be mixed with a cup of water and used for rinsing the scalp. Mild shampoo should be used to clean it off after 15-20 minutes.

2. Aloe vera - This plant has wonderful astringent properties that work on various skin and hair related conditions. It has anti-inflammatory soothing properties, which work well on various conditions of the scalp. It is an effective remedy for flaky scalp caused by a chronic dandruff condition. The gel obtained from the leaves of Aloe vera should be applied directly on the scalp and kept for 20 minutes. Use of Aloe vera can cause a change in the hair texture and cure dandruff too. Application of the Aloe vera gel twice a week reduces the excess oil production very efficiently.

3. Coconut oil - Virgin coconut oil is considered to be a very light oil. It should ideally be applied overnight or at least an hour before shampooing hair. This oil provides adequate conditioning to the hair, without making the scalp greasy. Excessive production of oil is prevented by the use of coconut oil prior to a hair wash.

4. Baking soda - Baking soda is very effective as a dry shampoo. It can also be used for rinsing excessively oily hair. Its alkaline nature helps in maintaining the pH of the scalp and it also absorbs excess oil present on the scalp. Baking soda can be directly sprinkled on the hair and scalp and left for 5-10 minutes. It should be rinsed with water after which a visible effect on excess oil removal is seen.

5. Lemon juice - Squeezing a lemon and applying its juice directly on the scalp is one of the easiest available home remedies for treating an oily scalp. Lemon is an excellent clarifier, which works well in removing accumulated dirt from hair. It is a good source of Vitamin C which provides nourishment to the scalp too. Whenever an oily scalp is experienced, lemon juice should be applied for a few minutes and rinsed off with water.

Afternoon Cravings - How To Manage Them?

Sometimes, you are just doing your work with a whole lot of concentration and suddenly as soon as the clock strikes 3 p.m. you get the munchies. The sudden, strong desires for food are called cravings and they strike you when you least expect it!

The reason for this might be a neurotransmitter named as serotonin, which regulates your emotions, mood, sleep and obviously, your appetite. Serotonin becomes slightly inactive by midday, which makes you crave salty and sweet snacks.

Here are some ways to curb your cravings:

  1. Don't skip breakfast or lunch. Choose food items that take a long time to digest, so you can stay full for a longer duration. Whole grain bread and vegetables are good options.
  2. Don't go grocery shopping during this hour because you will end up buying junk food.
  3. Don't watch television as junk food advertisements will lead to cravings, as the images shown to promote these products, induces the desire, which eventually will lead to obesity
  4. If you can feel your cravings still, choose to do something else, such as go for a walk or get yourself really busy with something till the urge subsides.

But if all else fails, then you have no option, but to give in and it is okay to give in sometimes. However, you should do it right and not reach for the nearest package of processed food! Instead, substitute the candy bar, or potato chips with the following options:

  1. Vegetable soup
  2. One slice of wholegrain bread with unsweetened jam/peanut butter
  3. Dried or fresh fruits
  4. Sweetened/unsweetened high fibre cereal with low-fat milk
  5. Low-fat granola bars
  6. Smoothies made from fresh fruit and skim milk
  7. Low-fat yoghurt with fresh fruits
  8. Unsalted, unbuttered popcorn
  9. Hot chocolate with skimmed milk made from low-fat cocoa powder

Basically, your body craves for carbs during the afternoon. And the trick is to choose complex carbs (carbohydrates that digest slowly) over simple carbs (carbohydrates that are easier to digest). From the list above, you can see that most complex carbs have been mentioned. In fact, eating complex carbs will trigger your serotonin levels which will provide you energy, return your focus and make you happier! So it is okay to snack, just don't open that packet of chips and remember to eat the right things.

Weight Loss Program - 7 Healthy Snacking Options To Help You Out!

Losing weight is easier said than done. When the munchies hit, most of us give up and go grab that bag of processed, trans-fat laden food. And then the guilt that you feel is terrible. So, to counter sudden pangs of hunger, and stay healthy (and guilt-free), here are some healthy snack foods you can chew on:

  1. Nuts: Tastier version to appetite subduing snacks! This is the best snack you can carry when you are going on a long journey. Toss some almonds or bhuna channa or figs, walnuts and pistachios, and fill a container that you can easily carry in your bag. So, if you’re on an airplane, instead of buying those salty snacks, munch on your customised one.
  2. Oatmeal: It is somewhere after midnight, and you are wide awake because your tummy wants a midnight snack. Oatmeal is a safe choice for a midnight snack. It even increases ‘tryptophan’ (a kind of amino acid) levels in your brain, which makes you sleep soundly. Eat it with some low-fat yoghurt and fruit of your choice. Avoid eating yoghurt at night, as it benefits best in the day time.
  3. Yoghurt: The gap between lunch and dinner is quite extensive, and if you feel hungry, it’s nothing surprising. The trick is to eat something that is nutritional and filling. Yoghurt is one such perfect snack. Eat it as it is, or mix in some cereals or fruits.
  4. Popcorn: This fun snack has high fibre content. It is also low in fat and packs some protein, thus make it filling and healthy.
  5. Chocolate: Sounds surprising, but chocolate is a treat you can include in your weight loss plan! Dark chocolate is actually good in small amounts. And giving in to your cravings every now and then won’t hurt. Restricting yourself can actually make you give up your plan.
  6. Fresh Seasonal Fruits: If you feel like something sweet, fruits are the best option. You would feel satisfied minus the guilt! Including seasonal fruits like melons, pineapples peaches and even mangoes occasionally can help filling stomach. As a fun option, you can freeze the grapes before eating them.
  7. Almonds: Not only are they delicious, they also pack a lot of nutrients. Grab a handful whenever the munchies strike!

Other Tips:

  1. A teaspoon of soaked chia seeds or grounded flaxseeds or pumpkin and sunflower seeds can make the oatmeal scrumptious and healthier.
  2. Adding About a tsp of cold-pressed olive oil to the hummus dip can make it healthier and it can be enjoyed with vegetable sticks.
  3. Plain yogurts can be added to nuts, fruit cuts or simply made as exotic raitas to facilitate satiety.
  4. Drinking Chaach (buttermilk) during the daytime, or lemonade can also help in keeping self hydrated.
  5. Looks for breakfast cereals which are sodium and sugar-free by reading nutritional labels.
  6. Pick for roasted, salt-free almonds to make it more healthy. Include figs, walnuts and pistachios in daily munching to fill up the stomach with nutrition.
  7. Green tea bags are easy to carry and can be taken at regular intervals.
  8. No diet farsan, zero cholesterol or other bakery products please, they don't exist. Eat from the earth rather rely on the boxes.
  9. Don't consume things which are artificially too chilled, let them come at room temperature first and then have them, as that creates an imbalance in our body.

Your child may be a late bloomer with a slight delay in speech development if he is normal in all respects like growth and development parameters. You can try speech training by yourself giving him training by slowly asking o repeat each word after you say it. It will take time and you will succeed anyway.

Acne Scars - Know The Dermatological Ways Of Treating Them!

Acne Scars - Know The Dermatological Ways Of Treating Them!

Acne scars are caused when a pimple or cyst is popped and broken leaving a layer of damaged skin behind. These scars are caused by the excess oil, dead skin, and bacteria blocking the skin pores causing it to swell.

Acne scars can be categorized into three types:

  1. Ice Pick scars which are small but have deep pits.
  2. Boxcar scars have sharp edges, these can be shallow or deep
  3. Rolling scar have a wavy look as they are wide and shallow. This type of scarring is usually caused by damage to the skin.

Causes of acne scars:

Acne and acne scars can be caused due to the following reasons:

  1. Hormonal imbalance during or after the onset of puberty
  2. Medicines that contains lithium, androgen or corticosteroids
  3. Oil and greasy food items and those rich in carbohydrates can trigger acne. In some cases, dairy products can worsen the condition.

Simple tips to prevent scarring:

Some acne scars fade with time. In the early stages, the scars might look pink as blood vessels in the damaged area of the skin provide it with nourishment. With time the collagen in the skin would fill the injured or damaged portion of the skin. In some cases, it might take up to a year for scars to fade.

  1. Don’t pick or squeeze pimples or acne as they can get inflamed. This inflammation can cause the bacteria to go further into the skin which would result in deeper scars.
  2. Use mild cosmetic products as some products can increase the risk of acne and scarring. Non-toxic, paraben-free products free from synthetic dyes and colours should be used sparingly.
  3. Getting enough sleep is important and necessary for the body to produce collagen which is a protein necessary for skin elasticity. Sleep also helps the body and skin to repair itself.

Treatment of acne scars:

In extreme cases, you might need proper treatment at a hospital. Most of these treatments can be performed as an outpatient procedure. Some of them are:

  1. Skin resurfacing: where the damaged skin is removed to help new skin to grow. The damaged skin can be removed by the use of a laserdermabrasionor a chemical peel.
  2. Laser Treatment: Lasers such as fractional CO2, MNRF, etc can help.
  3. FillersIn this procedure, the doctor would inject a filler such as a collagen or fat into the damaged area. This helps the skin to become smooth.
  4. Rolling: Rolling also known as needling, is a procedure where tiny needles are rolled over the skin to stimulate it to grow
  5. SurgeryIn a few very extreme cases the scars would need to be cut away and the area repaired with the use of skin grafts obtained from another part of the body.

Any scars and especially acne scars can be unsightly. A skin doctor or dermatologist would help you choose the right treatment plan depending on the type of damage done to the skin.
