Hepatitis can be temporary or viral. Temporary hepatitis, which is acute in nature, gets resolved on its own. Viral hepatitis can be of five types, A, B, C, D and E.

Now, let us discuss about the causes behind each type of hepatitis, which results in liver problem.

Causes

The fact that we have identified five types of Hepatitis, A, B, C, D and E, let’s take a look at the causes behind the occurrence of all these types:

  • Hepatitis A: The most common way through which this type of virus gets transmitted, is through consuming food or water contaminated by wastes from a person infected with hepatitis A.
  • Hepatitis B: One can suffer from Hepatitis B, if one comes in contact with infectious body fluids like blood, secretions from vagina, semen, taking drugs through injections, containing the virus of Hepatitis B.
  • Hepatitis C: This is also transmitted when someone comes in direct contact with fluids of an infected person, through injection drugs and sexual contact. As per the reports of Union Health Ministry, about 1.2 crore people of India are suffering from Hepatitis C, with the worst affected region being North India.

•     if you’ve ever had radiation to your neck to treat cancer
•     if you’re taking any of the medicines that can cause hypothyroidism - amiodarone, lithium, interferon alpha, interleukin 2, and maybe thalidomide
•     whether any of your family members have thyroid disease.

Polycythemia is a rare condition where the count of red blood cells in the body increases. The normal count of red blood cells ranges from 4.9-5.2 million cells per cmm. People having polycythemia witness an increase in the count of hemoglobin, hematocrit or red blood cells as compared to the normal level.

Women with hemoglobin levels higher than 16g/dL and hematocrit value higher than 48, are believed to have polycythemia. In case of men, hemoglobin levels higher than 16.5g/dL and hematocrit value greater than 49 are suggestive of polycythemia.

A myeloproliferative disorder that involves an uncontrolled red blood cells formation in the bone marrow is called as polycythemia vera. It is a slow growing cancer involving the blood cells. The cells growing in an excess quantity cause a thickening of blood and cause a reduction in the flow rate of blood. Thickening or clot formation can lead to a stroke or a cardiac arrest. This condition can develop and progress without any symptoms and go undiagnosed for a long period of time. Lack of prompt diagnosis and treatment can cause the condition to become life-threatening. It may also progress to other forms of cancers like acute leukemia.

The two main types of polycythemia are primary and secondary. Polycythemia vera is symptomless usually. When symptoms appear, the commonly seen ones are as follows – constant headache of mild to moderate intensity, itchy rashes on skin, bruises with bleeding points, lethargy, blurring of vision, excess sweating, joint swelling and excessive pain, unexpected weight loss, neuropathy in limbs, low to moderate grade fever and even shortness of breath. There is no specific age group predilection for its incidence, it can occur at any age. However, the prevalence rate is common in adults over 60 years of age. The male to female ratio of occurrence is also even, with no gender predilection.

Polycythemia vera is not completely curable, with the treatment being focused on reduction of red blood cell count. Symptomatic treatment allows for reducing the complications related to the presenting signs and symptoms. Phlebotomy is done where the blood volume is decreased by drawing out of blood from the veins. Thrombolytic drugs like low dose aspirin is given to break clots. Anti-cancer drug Ruxolinitib helps in the destruction of cancer cells to some extent.

What are the possible causes of polycythemia?

  1. Polycythemia occurs due to a genetic mutation of the protein called Janus kinase 2 or JAK2. This results in increased production of red blood cells.
  2. Another condition known as Primary Familial and Congenital Polycythemia (PFCP) is related to the mutation in the Erythropoietin Receptor (EPOR) which escalates the production of red blood cells in response to EPO.
  3. Deficiency of 2, 3-Bisphosphoglycerates (BPG) can increase red blood cell production in your body. Under this condition, hemoglobin develops an increased affinity to hold on to the oxygen, and is less likely to discharge it to the tissues. As a result more red blood cells are produced in response to insufficient oxygen levels.

Look out for the symptoms

The usual symptoms of polycythemia include the following-

The symptoms may vary from mild to severe. If left untreated, polycythemia can lead to severe health complications like scarring of the bone marrow, acute leukemia or myelodysplastic syndrome. Recognizing the symptoms at an early stage can help prevent the complications.

This disorder can cause various complications, formation of blood clots in the body being the most common of them. Formation of such blood clots in organs like lungs can cause an embolism or in the blood vessels can cause an obstruction to the blood flow. Deep vein thrombosis is a common complication caused by the presence of a thrombus formation due to blood clot in the veins of lower limbs. Polycythemia also causes splenomegaly due to increased exertion on the spleen by the uncontrolled growth of red blood cells. Other complications include formation of ulcers in the intestines, joint inflammation and development of more severe blood disorders.

  3. Busulfan - Although this drug is prescribed for the treatment of leukemia, it can also be used off- label to cure polycythemia.
  4. RuxolitinibThis drug is usually prescribed when other medications like hydroxyurea have failed to lower the blood count. Ruxolitinib inhibits the growth factors which are responsible for producing red blood cells.

What is Depression?

While we all feel sad, moody or low from time to time, some people experience these feelings intensely, for long periods of time (weeks, months or even years) and sometimes without any apparent reason. Depression is more than just a low mood – it's a serious condition that affects your physical and mental health.

Types:

-Unipolar and bipolar depression:
If the predominant feature is a depressed mood, it is called unipolar depression. However, if it is characterized by both manic and depressive episodes separated by periods of normal mood, it is referred to as bipolar disorder (previously called manic depression).

Unipolar depression can involve anxiety and other symptoms - but no manic episodes. However, research shows that for around 40 percent of the time, individuals with bipolar disorder are depressed, making the two conditions difficult to distinguish.

-Major depressive disorder with psychotic features:
This condition is characterized by depression accompanied by psychosis. Psychosis can involve delusions - false beliefs and detachment from reality, or hallucinations - sensing things that do not exist.

-Postpartum depression:
Women often experience "baby blues" with a newborn, but postpartum depression - also known as postnatal depression - is more severe.

-Major depressive disorder with seasonal pattern:
Previously called seasonal affective disorder (SAD), this condition is related to the reduced daylight of winter - the depression occurs during this season but lifts for the rest of the year and in response to light therapy.

Causes:

The causes of depression are not fully understood and may not be down to a single source. Depression is likely to be due to a complex combination of factors that include:

-psychological and social (psychosocial)

Some people are at higher risk of depression than others; risk factors include:

What is Depression?

While we all feel sad, moody or low from time to time, some people experience these feelings intensely, for long periods of time (weeks, months or even years) and sometimes without any apparent reason. Depression is more than just a low mood – it's a serious condition that affects your physical and mental health.

Types:

-Unipolar and bipolar depression:
If the predominant feature is a depressed mood, it is called unipolar depression. However, if it is characterized by both manic and depressive episodes separated by periods of normal mood, it is referred to as bipolar disorder (previously called manic depression).

Unipolar depression can involve anxiety and other symptoms - but no manic episodes. However, research shows that for around 40 percent of the time, individuals with bipolar disorder are depressed, making the two conditions difficult to distinguish.

-Major depressive disorder with psychotic features:
This condition is characterized by depression accompanied by psychosis. Psychosis can involve delusions - false beliefs and detachment from reality, or hallucinations - sensing things that do not exist.

-Postpartum depression:
Women often experience "baby blues" with a newborn, but postpartum depression - also known as postnatal depression - is more severe.

-Major depressive disorder with seasonal pattern:
Previously called seasonal affective disorder (SAD), this condition is related to the reduced daylight of winter - the depression occurs during this season but lifts for the rest of the year and in response to light therapy.

Causes:

The causes of depression are not fully understood and may not be down to a single source. Depression is likely to be due to a complex combination of factors that include:

-depressed woman
-Depression has a wide range of causes and potential treatments.

-biological - changes in neurotransmitter levels
-environmental
-psychological and social (psychosocial)

Some people are at higher risk of depression than others; risk factors include:

Symptoms:

-Depressed mood
-reduced interest or pleasure in activities previously enjoyed, loss of sexual desire

-insomnia (difficulty sleeping) or hypersomnia (excessive sleeping)
-psychomotor agitation, for example, restlessness, pacing up and down

Diagnosis:

We've become accustomed to doctors using specialized blood tests or other extensive laboratory tests to help them make a conclusive diagnosis. However, most laboratory tests are not very helpful when it comes to diagnosing depression. In fact, talking with the patient may be the most important diagnostic tool the doctor has. The recommendation is that doctors routinely screen all individuals for depression. This screening might occur during a visit for a chronic illness, at an annual wellness visit, or during pregnancy or postpartum visit.

3. Avocado: Its Oleic Acid Gives You Brainpower
I eat a whole one every day in my salad for lunch. Avocados are power foods because, again, they contain healthy fat that your brain needs in order to run smoothly. Three-fourths of the calories of an avocado is from fat, mostly monounsaturated fat, in the form of oleic acid. An average avocado also contains 4 grams of protein, higher than other fruits, and is filled with vitamin K, different kinds of vitamin B (B9, B6, and B5), vitamin C, and vitamin E12. Finally, they are low in sugar and high in dietary fiber, containing about 11 grams each.

Here are two good reasons why mushrooms are good for your mental health. First, their chemical properties oppose insulin, which helps lower blood sugar levels, evening out your mood. They also are like a probiotic in that they promote healthy gut bacteria. And since the nerve cells in our gut manufacture 80 to 90 percent of our body’s serotonin — the critical neurotransmitter that keeps us sane — we can’t afford to not pay attention to our intestinal health.

6. Onions: Layered With Cancer-Fighting Allium
You won’t find this item on most lists of mood foods. However, it’s included in Dr. Fuhrman’s G-BOMBS because onions and all allium vegetables (garlic, leeks, chives, shallots, and spring onions) have been associated with a decreased risk of several cancers.

“Eating onions and garlic frequently are associated with a reduced risk of cancers of the digestive tract,” explains Fuhrman. “These vegetables also contain high concentrations of anti-inflammatory flavonoid antioxidants that contribute to their anticancer properties.” Again, if you consider the relationship between your digestive tract and your brain, it is understandable why food that can prevent cancers of the gut would also benefit your mood.

7. Tomatoes: Packed With Depression Fighters
I try to eat at least six baby tomatoes in my salad each day for lunch because tomatoes contain lots of folic acids and alpha-lipoic acid, both of which are good for fighting depression. According to research published in the Journal of Psychiatry and Neuroscience, many studies show an elevated incidence of folate deficiency in patients with depression. In most of the studies, about one-third of depression patients were deficient in folate.

Folic acid can prevent an excess of homocysteine — which restricts the production of important neurotransmitters like serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine — from forming in the body. Alpha-lipoic acid keeps coming up as I read more about nutrition and the brain, so I have begun to take it as a supplement, as well. It helps the body convert glucose into energy and therefore stabilizes mood.

8. Beans: Satisfyingly High in Mood-Stabilizing Fiber
“Beans, beans, good for the heart. The more you eat, the more you ... smile.” They make the G-BOMB list because they can act as anti-diabetes and weight-loss foods. They are good for my mood because my body (and every body) digests them slowly, which stabilizes blood sugar levels. Any food that assists me in evening out my blood sugar levels is my friend.
