Side Effects of Diet Pills
Today ‘Diet Pills’ are the shortcut to lose weight and many people favor them to cut down their time and efforts occupied for losing weight. But they don’t know about the dangers of diet pills and side effects. While taking these pills they carry the risk of nasty potential side effects and possible complications.
Recently sales of appetite suppressants (e.g. dexfenfluramine) is stopped after a research that linked it to long-term problems including the heart diseases.
The diet pills are of two types:
• Placebos: – Drugs that contain nothing probably just sugar or chalk etc.
• Ephedra: – Pills based on the drug Ephedrine, similar to amphetamine. This drug carries the risk of many serious side effects including vomiting, heart palpitations, insomnia, strokes, kidney failures, miscarriages, and heart attack.
Diet pills available in the market are only suitable, if taken under the medical supervision. They are:
• Xenical:-A chemical that prevents absorption of fat. Side effects include diarrhea, wind, stomach ache, headache, tiredness, irregular periods and anxiety.
• Reductil:-Side-effects include heart palpitations, raised blood pressure, constipation, nausea, insomnia, and anxiety.
Medical Precaution: – The whole treatment should occur under strict medical supervision. Anyone who is overweight but not obese should be told to lose weight by a combination of healthy eating and exercise, perhaps with the aid of a dietician.
Danger Zones:- In August 2002, the Guardian reported that: “Five people have died and almost 500 have fallen ill after taking the dangerous and poorly regulated herbal slimming aids from China, according to reports in recent weeks that have highlighted the fatal consequences of Japan’s dieting obsession.”

Ayurvedic Treatment Options for Allergic Bronchitis

The lungs are made of pipes - starting from the nostrils all the way to the fine tubules in the lungs, through which the air we breathe passes through. The inhaled air also contains a lot of other particles - dust, pollen, virus, cigarette smoke, etc. Very often, the body is allergic to one or more of these particles, and the bronchi are constantly irritated and inflamed due to their sustained exposure. This causes allergic bronchitis which is identified by symptoms like chronic coughing, difficulty breathing, hoarseness, nasal congestion.

Ayurveda believes that the human body has 3 doshas or bio elements - vata, pitta, and kapha. Any disease is believed to be due to one of these being affected. Allergic bronchitis is believed to be an issue with vata.

  1. The most effective treatment for bronchitis is believed to be a glass of milk mixed with 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric powder in it. This mixture is believed to be most effective when taken on an empty stomach and can be had 2 to 3 times a day.
  2. Equal portions of powders of dry ginger, long pepper, and black pepper can be mixed with honey to make a smooth paste. This can be had 2 to 3 times a day to see wonderful results.
  3. One-half teaspoon of licorice powder mixed in 1 cup of water can be boiled, cooled, and stored to be consumed through the day.
  4. A creeping plant known as somlata (Ephedra vulgaris) is found to be highly efficacious in relieving asthma. This grows in western Himalayas in abundance and is sent in hundreds of tonnes to western countries where ephedrine is prepared from it. The powder made from the whole plant, after drying in the shade and is given in the dosage of 100 to 250 milligrams, mixed with honey or water at the intervals of 8 to 4 hours.

Other formulations

  • Kapha katari - Literally translates as phlegm cutter, this works immediately. The powder needs to be wrapped in betel leaf and chewed slowly. Continue with another 4 doses over the next 24 hours.
  • Kanakasava - The extract of Datura is very effective in halting bronchitis but needs to be taken under medical supervision only. This is habit-forming and therefore, needs to be used cautiously.

In addition, follow these general considerations too:

  1. Avoid or minimize exposure to known allergens, cigarette smoke and pollution
  2. Drink about 8 to 10 glasses of water to help form a thin mucous
  3. Avoid dust in the bedroom, avoid feather pillows
  4. Regularly vacuum clean the house
  5. Do yoga, especially the breathing asanas which are very beneficial for bronchitis patients

Allergic bronchitis is a chronic condition, and acute attacks can be avoided by following some of the pointers mentioned above.

- Kapha katari - Literally translates as phlegm cutter, this works immediately. The powder needs to be wrapped in betel leaf and chewed slowly. Continue with another 4 doses over the next 24 hours.

- Kanakasava - The extract of Datura is very effective in halting bronchitis but needs to be taken under medical supervision only.

Priapism - How Can It Be Treated?

Priapism is a condition of the penis where the erection persists long after the sexual stimulation. It is a painful condition and is extremely common among patients suffering from sickle cell anaemia. Medical treatment is necessary at the earliest in order to prevent any damage to the tissue. This condition is mostly observed in people in the age segment of 30-40.

Symptoms of priapism:
The symptoms of priapism vary according to the type of priapism a person is affected with. Two of the most common types of priapism are non-ischemic and ischemic priapism. While the latter is more common to those with a family history of the same disease, the former can occur to any person. Some of the common symptoms of both the condition include the following:

  1. An erection that lasts for more than an hour or more
  2. Pain in the penis during erection
  3. Rigid shaft of the penile with a soft tip

What are the causes of priapism?

  1. Blood-related disorders such as leukaemia, thalassemia, and sickle cell anaemia
  2. It can also arise from side effects of other medications such as fluoxetine, sertraline, papaverine, warfarin, atomoxetine, chlorpromazine, phentolamine etc
  3. Abuse of alcohol, marijuana, drugs etc.
  4. An injury or trauma to the penis, perineum and pelvis restricting the blood flow.
  5. Penis cancer
  6. Metabolic disorders such as amyloidosis and gout
  7. Neurological disorders such as syphilis or an injury to the spinal cord
  8. A toxic infection or a bite from a spider

What are the possible complications?
Priapism can lead to serious consequences, especially the ischemic type. The trapped blood inside the penis that is devoid of oxygen can start damaging the tissue of the penis. If this disease is not treated on time, it can lead to erectile dysfunction.

How is priapism diagnosed?
A doctor starts from a physical exam and goes through the medical history in order to get first-hand knowledge of the condition. This is followed by the prescription of tests such as blood gas measurement, ultrasound, count of red blood cells and platelets and other toxicology tests.

What are the treatment options?
There could be various approaches that are taken by a doctor. Excess blood can be drained out with the help of a syringe and the penis can be flushed with saline in order to get rid of the oxygen-devoid blood out of the penis. Certain medications can be injected into the pen that helps the blood to flow normally without accumulating inside the penis. If all else fails, a surgeon can perform a procedure in order to drain the blood from a different route. In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

Treatment Options Available for Premature Ejaculation

Since long, ailments which can hamper your physical intimacy with your partner are of grave concern and amongst these premature ejaculation tops the list. Thus it is important that you discuss it out with your partner along with a therapist and resolve it through medical help.

It is important that we understand what is premature ejaculation in order. Premature ejaculation is uncontrolled ejaculation either before or shortly after penetration. It may result in unsatisfactory intercourse for both partners. This can increase the anxiety of that person. It is one of the most common forms of male sexual dysfunction.

What are the causes behind PE?
The exact cause of premature ejaculation is unknown, but it's often rooted in physical, psychological, or emotional issues. In some cases, it may be related to a medical cause such as hormonal problems, injury, or a side effect of certain medicines.

Other causes may include:

  • Early experiences with masturbation and sex.
  • Erectile Dysfunction.
  • Relationship problems.
  • Intercourse with a new partner.

What are the symptoms?: The primary symptom of premature ejaculation is the inability to delay ejaculation for more than one minute after penetration. The main symptom is an uncontrolled ejaculation either before or shortly after intercourse begins. Ejaculation occurs before the person wishes it, with minimal sexual stimulation.

How it is diagnosed?: Premature ejaculation is diagnosed based on typical symptoms. To understand your problem, your doctor will need to discuss your sexual history with you. Be frank and open. The more your doctor knows, the better he or she can help you.

How it is treated?: In many cases premature ejaculation gets better on its own over time. Treatment may not be needed. But there are some serious conditions that need to be treated. If you are suffering from depression you should take medications to remove your depression, such as Paxil (paroxetine), Zoloft (sertraline), and Prozac (fluoxetine).

Practicing relaxation techniques or using distraction methods may help you delay ejaculation. You can try using a condom to reduce sensation to the penis. Or you can try a different position (such as lying on your back) during intercourse.

These therapies may be used together in different combinations to treat premature ejaculation and in turn improve your self-esteem and sex life. Behavioral therapy is one possible approach for treating premature ejaculation. Most commonly, the 'squeeze technique' is used. Some men with premature ejaculation may benefit from drugs called phosphodiesterase inhibitors, such as sildenafil (Viagra), vardenafil (Levitra), and tadalafil (Cialis). If you wish to discuss any specific problem, you can consult a sexologist.
