Dry Fruit Or Dried Fruit - Which Is Healthier?

The terms dry fruits and dried fruits seem synonymous, but there is a slight difference between the two. To put it in simple terms nuts are also known as dry fruits. Dry fruits can be further categorized as dehiscent and indehiscent. The former refers to seeds contained in a pod and the latter refers to those that are not found in a seedpod. This includes pistachios, cashew nuts, walnuts and almonds. On the other hand, natural fleshy fruits that have been naturally or synthetically dried are called dried fruits. For example, dehydrated figs, raisins, dried cherries, apricots, etc. are considered dried fruits. Dehydrated apples, bananas, kiwis, etc. are also called dried fruits.

Which is the healthier choice?

Dry fruits and dried fruits both have a number of health benefits.

  • Dry fruits are rich in proteins, vitamins, minerals and healthy fats. However, they also contain a high amount of saturated fats and have a high calorific value. Hence, they should be consumed in moderation.
  • Dry fruit consumption should also be limited for people trying to lose weight and those suffering from heart problems.
  • To make dry fruits like nuts healthier, you could soak them in water overnight and skin them the next morning before eating them, this helps in reducing the level of saturated fats in them.
  • As compared to dry fruits, dried fruits has a much higher sugar level. Thus, their intake should be limited for weight watchers, diabetics, heart patients as well as those suffering from gallstones, high blood pressure and water retention.
  • However, dried fruits can be beneficial for anemic patients and athletes. Dried fruits have the same vitamin and minerals as the fresh fruits and the only thing missing is the water content. Dried fruits are also rich in antioxidants and hence help boost immunity.

Tips to buy dry fruits and dried fruits

  • With both dry fruits and dried fruits, you must take a look at the ingredients in the case of packaged dry/dried fruits.
  • Avoid nuts that have been artificially sweetened, salted or fried.
  • Also, do not buy dried fruits that have sugar listed as an ingredient.
  • Dried fruits are naturally sweet and artificial sweeteners only add calories without any added nutrition.
  • For fruits that tend to be bitter when dried such as cranberries, look for dried cranberries that have been sweetened with 100% natural fruit juice.

Phobias - Know Forms Of Them!

An irrational or excessive fear of anything can be classified as a phobia. Phobias can often interfere with a person’s daily life and create hindrances where there aren’t any. Unlike anxiety disorders, phobias are triggered by specific stimuli. This could be caused by environmental factors, genetics, traumatic events etc. depression and substance abuse could also contribute towards phobias. Life events are also a common cause of phobias. For example, being bitten by a dog at a young age could make a person scared of animals even when he or she is an adult.

The most common types of phobias are:

  1. Agoraphobia: This can be described as a fear of open spaces. People suffering from Agoraphobia fear being trapped in a situation and of large crowds. In extreme cases, this fear can confine a person to his or her home.
  2. Social phobia: Some people may be very afraid of simple interactions with other people. Simple tasks such as answering the phone or placing an order at a restaurant can spike panic attacks. This can very often lead to social withdrawal.
  3. Glossophobia: This can be described as performance anxiety or the fear of speaking out in a crowd. This may also be referred to as stage fright. People suffering from this phobia may begin to show physical signs of being uncomfortable when they are put in the spotlight.
  4. Acrophobia: This refers to a fear of heights. People suffering from this phobia may be unable to even look down from a window on the first floor of a building. The common symptoms of this phobia include sweating, dizziness, vertigo and loss of consciousness when looking down from a height.
  5. Claustrophobia: People suffering from Claustrophobia have a fear of small spaces. Any space this is enclosed or tight can feel suffocating to them. This may prevent them from rising in a taxi or a metro or even taking the elevator.
  6. Hemophobia: Some people are more afraid of blood as compared to others. This is known as Hemophobia. In such cases, the patient may be affected by the sight of their own blood as well as another person’s blood. Hemophobia patients may often faint at the sight of blood or an injury.
  7. Aviophobia: The fear of flying is known as Aviophobia. People with this phobia are unable to sit in an aircraft as they are scared of something going wrong.

Phobias may also be present in combinations. For example, a person suffering from Claustrophobia may also have a fear of heights. The only way to combat these phobias is with counselling and professional help.

How To Reduce Stomach Fat For Flat Stomach?

Beer belly is a word that is used to describe a fat tummy that results from the excessive consumption of alcoholic drinks. In case of any alcoholic drink, the liver tends to burn alcohol instead of fat which leads to bigger tummies. Basically, if the calorie intake is higher than calorie expenditure, then fat tends to accumulate in the body.

Now if you want to turn that beer belly into six-pack abs, then you need to follow these rules-

1. Limit carbohydrate consumption
This means you have to cut down on sugar and starch-based foods such as refined flour, aerated drinks and anything that has sugar in it. Follow a strict diet that focuses on a limited amount of whole grains. Avoid simple carbohydrates which tend to spike blood sugar levels and aid in fat accumulation. Reduce your portion sizes to decrease your overall calorie consumption.

2. Eat fiber
Increase fiber consumption as fiber is beneficial for losing fat. It helps in you feeling fuller and thus, eat less. Fiber also reduces the chances of various life-threatening diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and bad cholesterol levels in the body. Eat foods that are rich in fiber such as beans, lentils and broccoli.

3. Weight training
Weight training helps in losing body fat by increasing muscle mass in the body. Muscle burns calories at rest, so more muscle means more calorie burnt. Weight training also increases your metabolism which means your overall calorie expenditure will increase significantly. If you don't have access to a gym then combine bodyweight exercises such as pushups, squats and pull-ups in a circuit. A sample workout circuit would be 20 push up, 20 squats and 5 pull-ups one after the other. Rest for a minute and then repeat the circuit 5 times.

4. Cardio
Cardio is very important in losing fat from all over your body. Opt for HIIT (high-intensity interval training) instead of steady-state cardio like jogging at the same pace over a period of time. Too much steady-state cardio increases cortisol levels in the body leading to muscle loss. Instead, focus on HIIT which means you do an exercise at full throttle for a short period of time such as 30 seconds. Rest for 20 seconds and then to another exercise for 30 seconds. Repeat the procedure for another 10 minutes. This method keeps your metabolism elevated for 48 hours after your workout.

Cardiac Arrest Versus Heart Attack!

Cardiac Arrest Versus Heart Attack!

Usually, cardiac arrest and heart attack are two things which most people use interchangeably, however, there is a big difference between the two.

Difference between cardiac arrest and heart attack:
A cardiac arrest is far deadlier considering that it comes without a warning or any prior indication of a problem. Here, the heart just stops beating and immediate first-aid can make a lot of difference between life and death. Electrical shock is the best way to revive a patient and should be given within a few minutes of such an arrest.

On the other hand, a person suffers a heart attack when there is a blockage in the artery which prevents the smooth flow of oxygen-rich blood from reaching the heart. It is important to note that unlike a cardiac arrest the signs of heart attack start slow and persists for long.

A heart attack is one of the common causes of cardiac arrest, but not always it is the case. A cardiac arrest happens most commonly when the heart is receiving more than 300 impulses per minute or due to absent electrical impulses. In the first instance, an electrical shock is a lifesaving technique and in the second, the patient can be treated with certain medications and a temporary pacemaker

Symptoms of cardiac arrest:
The symptoms of cardiac arrest are immediate and extreme.

  • A fainting spell or a sudden collapse
  • Loss of consciousness
  • No pulse or breathing

Symptoms of a heart attack

Prevention of a cardiac arrest:
What makes this a deadly condition is that you cannot tell your risks of having one and therefore the next best thing to do is to lower your risks.
The best way to do that is to:

  • Follow a diet that is balanced and nutritious
  • Alcohol should be consumed in moderation
  • Quit smoking
  • Stay physically active

How can you prevent a heart attack?

  • Keep yourself fit and exercise regularly
  • Keep your cholesterol level under check
  • Limit your alcohol intake
  • If you are obese, control your weight
  • Intake a heart-friendly diet.

Now that the distinction is clear between the two, it is recommended that everyone should get themselves screened for potential heart problems on a regular basis.

Weight Loss Surgery - Know Forms Of It!

Weight loss surgery or bariatric surgery helps lose weight in those people who are about 100 pounds (male) and 80 pounds (female). It helps individual resolve obesity-related medical problems.

Types of Weight Loss Surgeries-

1. Gastric Band

A band is put around the stomach tightly which divides the stomach into two sections, namely smaller upper and larger lower which is connected through a small tube by which emptying of the upper part becomes slow. Since less food is required to fill this pouch; there is no need to eat much. The band is connected to a device under the skin. It can be tightened after 4-6 weeks after surgery.

Merits: Simpler method. Recovery is faster leaving a small scar.

Demerits: Lesser weight loss than other surgeries. The band might slip out. Vomiting can occur after overeating food quickly.

2. Sleeve Gastrectomy

In this procedure, a larger portion of the stomach is cut off, and the remaining smaller part is attached to the intestine. Smaller the stomach, lesser is the production of the appetite-regulating hormone ghrelin. As a result, less food is taken in.

Merits: It is a simple method. As it does not involve intestines, the process of absorption takes place smoothly, and the patient does not fall short of nutrients.

Demerits: It is an irreversible process. It can cause infection and leaking of the sleeve might take place.

3. Duodenal Switch with Biliopancreatic Diversion

In this procedure, a larger part (70%) of the stomach is cut off leaving the duodenum. The surgeon cuts the middle part of intestine attaches it to the duodenum. It is called duodenal switch. The leftover part of the intestine is again attached to the last part of intestine allowing pancreatic juices and bile to flow into that part. This is biliopancreatic division. Food passes directly into the small intestine limiting the absorption of nutrients and calories, ultimately resulting in weight loss.

Merits: It is a fast method to lose weight, and the patient can eat large amounts of food.

Demerits: Nutritional deficiencies are seen.

4. Gastric Ballooning

A small balloon filled with salt and water is placed in the stomach through a thin tube via the throat.

Merits: The patient feels full and will not be able to eat much.

Demerits: It is a temporary method, which can last only for 6 months.

5. Gastric Bypass

In this procedure, the surgeon divides the stomach into two parts, namely upper and lower. Here, the upper part of the stomach is directly connected to the last part of the intestine.

Merits: More than 50% weight loss take place, as much weight gets reduced, and conditions, such as diabetes and blood pressure come under control.

Demerits: As less of nutrients are absorbed, the patient might land up into anemia and nutritional deficiency. The patient might need to take supplements after surgery to maintain balance.
