About Dipyridamole

Dipyridamole, an antiplatelet drug, helps in keeping the blood vessels open to stop the platelets from cluttering together. It is used in combination with warfarin, a blood thinner, which prevents blood clots after replacement of heart valve. Blood clots can cause serious complications such as strokes, heart attacks, and blocking of blood vessels.

Possible side effects of Dipyridamole are dizziness, upset stomach, diarrhoea, vomiting, headache and flushing. It is best to inform your doctor or health care professional in case of serious side effects such as fainting, stomach pain, yellowing skin, dark urine, bruises or unusual bleeding, weakness, vision changes, slurred speech and confusion. If you notice any allergic reaction such as rash, itching, swelling and trouble in breathing, seek medical help right away.

    How does this medication work?

    This medication works by inhibiting vascular endothelial cells and erythrocytes to uptake and metabolism adenosine. It also prevents platelet aggregation and thrombosis by causing coronary vasodilation. It prevents the degradation of cAMP which inhibits platelet function, by blocking the functions of phosphodiesterase and adenosine deaminase. This causes the cAMP level to increase to help block arachidonic acid secretion from membranes.
