10 Ways To Combat Social Anxiety Disorder!

10 Ways To Combat Social Anxiety Disorder!

Social anxiety disorder or social anxiety phobia is characterized by an extreme and often, unrealistic fear of social situations and scenarios. A patient suffering from this condition will usually be ridden with self-confidence and a sense of intense nervousness as if he or she is being constantly watched and scrutinized. It may be caused by biological, psychological or environmental factors. Let us find out ten ways of getting over the same.

  1. CBT - CBT or cognitive behavioral therapy is a form of talk therapy that allows a patient to speak with a psychologist or psychiatrist, so as to find out the root cause of the condition. This form of theory helps in arriving at ways of overcoming the feelings of nervousness in social situations.
  2. Practice going out with smaller groups - It is said that sticking to small and intimate groups can help in overcoming the hesitation and self-esteem issues that many of these patients feel. Once they are comfortable, they can take on larger groups.
  3. Medication - Antidepressants and beta-blockers are sometimes prescribed along with other kinds of medication, for patients who are unable to control their intense anxiety in social situations.
  4. Face the fear - A little introspection will help you arrive at the reason or root cause of your anxiety. This can help in facing the fears and tackling them. You can talk about these fears with someone.
  5. Unhelpful thinking - Tackle unhelpful thinking where you imagine people are looking at you in a certain way because they must be judging you. Tell yourself over and over until you believe that it is not true.
  6. Focus on yourself - The key is to focus on yourself instead of getting hooked on to what others may be thinking about you. This will help in banishing negative thoughts.
  7. Be in the present - Practice deep breathing or meditation to bring yourself back to the present every time you begin to think about what people may be thinking about you when you are in a social scenario.
  8. Lifestyle changes - Drinking less and not smoking at all can also help in the better production of hormones that will help in balanced thinking, especially in anxiety-ridden situations.
  9. Group therapy - Much like CBT, group therapy gives you space and platform to voice your fears and anxiety. The advantage of this kind of therapy is that you can also hear the stories and fears of other people, which will give you some point of reference when it comes to overcoming your own fears.
  10. Communication skills - You can go to a counsellor or get soft skills training for better communication skills, which will help you improve your social interactions. This, in turn, will give you much confidence to deal with the world outside.

Can Lactose Intolerance Develop As You Age?

Can Lactose Intolerance Develop As You Age?

If you are feeling gassy and bloated immediately after having milk, it is time to reconsider your milk digestion power. While every baby is born with the ability to produce lactase, with age the ability to produce lactose decreases and the level of intolerance towards milk and other dairy products increases. This condition, however, greatly varies from individual to individual.

People in their 50's often find themselves to be intolerant towards lactose. When this happens, the lactose that is consumed travels into the colon undigested. This is the place where bacteria breaks down the sugar present into the lactose resulting in a fluid and excess gas.

According to a report published by the National Institute of Health, it is found that more than 60 percent of the ageing population reduces their lactose digestion ability with time. The genetic setup of a person has a lot to do with it. The LCT gene is responsible for producing lactose in the body, an enzyme, which is responsible for digesting dairy-based product. With age, this gene becomes less active resulting in lactose intolerance leading to various side effects such as diarrhoea, abdominal cramps, and nausea.

According to a study conducted by the NIH, it is found that people from an ethnic background such as Italian, Arab, West African Jewish and Greek are more prone to lactose intolerance than their peers. Lactose intolerance can also occur due to injury related to the small intestine. People are known to have fallen victims of lactose intolerance due to infection, radiation or diseases as well. According to a study conducted by the NIDDK (National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases), it is found that people become lactose intolerant if they consume poorly treated water.

Primary lactose intolerance is more common than secondary lactose intolerance. In Primary lactose intolerance, lactase gets generated at normal levels and then starts declining with age. While the reason for the onset of primary lactose is not known, it can develop at any age and gets worse with age. The sad part of lactose intolerance is the fact that it does not get cured. The only solution is to completely cut down dairy products or lessen it to a significant extent.

While there is no hard and fast rule about lactose intolerance, it is a good idea to visit a doctor whenever the symptoms crop up. Often the reason for lactose intolerance can be entirely different from what is predicted. Addressing the underlying cause can free a patient from suffering from gas, bloating and inflammation. A doctor mostly conducts a lactose tolerance test to find out the preliminary stage of the condition and then prescribes medication if necessary.

Eye Health - Exercises That Can Help You Improve It!

Eye Health - Exercises That Can Help You Improve It!

There are many common measures people take to improve their eyesight or to improve their vision, including wearing glasses, lenses and many more.

Here are some effective exercises, which can prove to be highly beneficial to improve your eye health:

1. Stretching
This is the most common and also one of the easiest to do. It requires you to just look up, hold for two seconds, look down, hold for two seconds and then repeat this procedure for each corner of your eye, which means top-left, top-right, bottom-left and bottom-right corners.

2. Flexing
This is simply rotating your eyes in circles. Roll your eyes in the clockwise direction for one minute and then roll your eyes in the anticlockwise direction for one minute.

3. Focus switching
This particular eye exercise is probably the most useful one to improve eye health. In this eye exercise, you have to hold something at a reading distance and cover the other eye. You then have to find something that is at least twenty feet away and trace its shape with one eye closed. With one eye closed, trace more shapes, which are twenty feet away.

4. Palming
This exercise is also very simple to perform. All you have to do is cover your eyes with your palms. Once you have done this, just wait and see that there are no bright flashes of light. If you see that there is a bright flash of light, just wait till they go. This is used primarily to distress the eyes.

5. Deep blinking
This is also an incredibly useful exercise for distance vision. What you have to do is to place some large letters are at a fair distance and then sit on a chair. You have to then close your eyes and tighten all your muscles for 5 seconds. After 5 seconds are over, you have to open your eyes and then you have to see the letters for a second or two. The more number of times you do this, the more clearly you will be able to see the letters after reopening your eyes.

However, these eye exercises are not universally accepted by all doctors.

I am suffering from thyroid my tsh is 8.93 and I take thyronorm 50 tablet is this dose of medicine appropriate?

Hello, Thanks for the query. TSH 8.93 mU/L even with treatment means current dosage is not adequate, It needs to be increased by 12.5 to 25 mcg. After taking the increased dosage, TSH needs to be checked after 6 weeks. Ideally TSH should be maintained around 3 to 4 mU/L, at that level most of the symptoms are in check. If you have any questions please do come back. Thanks.

Respiratory Problems - Know Forms Of Them!

Respiratory Problems - Know Forms Of Them!

The respiratory system, through which air enters the body, is prone to disorders, and most of them are infections. Micro-organisms thrive in the air around us, and can gain easy access to the system through the air that we inhale. Therefore, respiratory issues are very common, but also not always a cause for concern. Most respiratory disorders would have common symptoms including coughing, chest pain, sputum production with varying features, shortness of breath, wheezing, etc.

Read on to know the symptoms of common respiratory disorders, so you are equipped to handle them.

  1. Asthma: Asthma is one of the most common respiratory issues. The trigger could be extreme cold, excessive pollen in the air, stress, etc.
  2. Common cold: This is a common disorder of the upper respiratory tract. This could be due to allergy or infection. There is difficulty breathing, labored breathing, runny nose, and extreme lethargy. The throat is also sore and there is a scratchy, itchy feeling at the back of the throat.
  3. Bronchitis: The bronchi are the further branches through which air flows, and these when inflamed cause bronchitis. Often caused as an infection, this produces a cough that can throw up a lot of sputum.
  4. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: This often occurs with ageing and also due to smoking. This produces chronic coughing, difficulty to throw out air easily without effort. There could also be phlegm, which can be colorless (unlike an infection)
  5. Tuberculosis: This is a bacterial infection of the lung tissue, and there is shortness of breath, a cough which persists for more than 5 weeks, and greenish-yellowish sputum. The person also would have very low energy levels, and sometimes blood in the sputum too.
  6. Pneumonia: Pneumonia again is an infection of the lung and can be caused by bacteria or virus. This again causes chest pain, difficulty breathing, shortness of breath, and greenish sputum.
  7. Lung cancer: With smoking and environmental pollution on the rise, the instances of lung cancer have also been on the rise. This is usually diagnosed in the later stages as the symptoms are confused with any common respiratory disorders and ignored. Chest pain, chronic cough, difficulty breathing, and voice changes are some common symptoms of cancer.
  8. Emphysema: Caused predominantly by smoking, this causes breathing difficulties and reduces the amount of air available for exchange in the lungs. There is no cure, but quitting smoking can reduce the severity of the condition.

Know that prolonged problems with respiratory tract require further investigation and should not be ignored as just another attack of cold and cough.
