About Dalteparin

Dalteparin is a type of anticoagulant that helps in preventing blood clot formation in our body. It can be used to prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT), which may lead to pulmonary embolism (blood clots in lungs) in bed-ridden patients or people who have undergone certain types of surgery. In some cases it is also used to treat venous thromboembolism in cancer patients.

You should not use Dalteparin if you have low platelet count in you body, active bleeding, allergic to it or any of the ingredients used in it. It is advised that you consult a doctor first if you are pregnant, plan on becoming pregnant, breastfeeding, have inherited bleeding disorder or caused by some disease, uncontrolled high blood pressure, hemorrhagic stroke, bacterial endocarditis, had recent surgery, ulcer, or have any medical conditions.

Some common side effects of Dalteparin are redness, pain and swelling at site of injection. Other serious side effects include unusual bleeding, easy bruising, pale skin, shortness of breath or feeling light headed, severe headache, sudden weakness, problem in speech, vision or balance, purple or red spots under the skin. You should see a doctor immediately if you encounter any of these serious problems.

Dalteparin is administered only as an injection, and is injected under the skin. The exact dosage and the recommended period of usage should be as prescribed by your doctor.

    The active constituent of this medication is low weight heparin, used to treat deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. The drug enhances the activity of antithrombin III, which in turn reduces the formation of thrombin and Factor Xa.
