About Citicoline

Citicoline is a chemical that naturally occurs in the body which is responsible for regulating many vital processes in the brain as well in as the body. As a medicine, it is taken orally as a dietary supplement or given by IV or as a shot. Citicoline works by increasing a brain chemical called phosphatidylcholine which improves brain function. Citicoline also decreases brain tissue damage during a brain injury by repairing damaged nerve cells.

Citicoline has also been found to influence the cognitive abilities and improve nerve transmission. Hence, Citicoline is used for treating alzheimer's disease and other types of dementia, cerebrovascular disease such as stroke, head trauma, age-related memory loss, attention deficit-hyperactive disorder, parkinson’s disease, and glaucoma.

Most people who take Citicoline do not experience any problematic side effects. But in some rare cases, side effects such as insomnia, low or high blood pressure headache, blurred vision, diarrhoea, nausea, chest pains, and others. The safety of taking this medicine if you are pregnant or breast-feeding is unknown. Avoid use to stay on the safe side.

You are advised to not take this medicine if you have an allergy towards any of its ingredients or if you suffer from hypertonia. It is also not recommended for anyone who is 18 years of age or younger. Medicines like levodopa and meclophenoxate can interfere with the action of Citicoline so inform your doctor if you are taking these medicines before starting the medication.

The usual dosage of Citicoline for slow thinking skills due to old age is 1000-2000 mg per day. For chronic cerebrovascular disease the recommended dosage is 600 mg per day. For ischemic stroke, it is 500-2000 mg of per day starting within the first 24 hours of stroke. It can be taken with or after food. Adequate amounts of fluids should be consumed while taking this medicine.
