About Ambrisentan

Ambrisentan is a medication used to treat pulmonary hypertension in patients of WHO class II or WHO class III. It is an endothelin receptor antagonist that blocks certain substances present in the lungs, which in turn helps decrease the blood pressure inside the lungs.

You should refrain from using Ambrisentan if have any liver problems or lung problems, are allergic to any medicine, are pregnant, plan on becoming pregnant, or breastfeeding. You should also consult your doctor before taking Ambrisentan if you have history of heart failure, anemia, fluid retention problem, alcohol dependency or taking any medicines or supplements.

There are very few reported side effects of Ambrisentan. These include stuffy nose, irritation in nose or throat and flushing. You should see a doctor as soon as possible if any of these persist for prolonged duration.

Ambrisentan is available only as tablets to be taken orally. You can have them with or without food but you should consult your doctor regarding the appropiate dosage.

    How does this medication work?

    This medication behaves as a potent selective endothelin type A receptor antagonist. Endothelin is a peptide synthesized within the vascular smooth muscle as well as endothelium and are acted upon by endothelin-1 which is an endogenous chain of amino acids connected by the amine bonds. Thus the medication antagonizes the action of endothelin and inhibit the constriction of blood vessels and reduces the blood pressure.
