Hello Doctor, I'm 43 years old since 7 months I am taking 90 ml to 180 ml of whisky daily due to some financial issue. Please advise.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
You see this is exactly the problem: when you have a financial issue you are spending more to drink than to save! this level of drinking can only drown your misery but do nothing to solve it. Therefore, the issue is not getting resolved but your finances will get drained and you will feel more miserable. In fact, you need to do more to earn the money or to reduce expenditure, at least. Please quit and do it now. As time goes by, you will start drinking more because nothing is happening to sort out your issues. You need to be responsible, be respectful, and be functional always. In line with that, it is advisable to quit alcohol and do something responsible instead. The set up is for you to become an alcoholic gradually and you will not know when that happens or when it becomes too late to turn the clock back.

Sir my friend has lack of concentration problem he is not able to stable his mind. Please help.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
Your friend must be under some kind of stress which he may not be aware of. As soon as he handles that stress his concentration and memory will happily return! For which he should ideally meet with a counselor. In the meantime let him do the following:Daily exercise of at least half an hour is a must. Even if he goes to a gym, ask for aerobic and/or callisthenic exercises with whatever else he is doing. A healthy body harbors a healthy mind. With regard to memory, it is very important that his brain and body is ideally rested to be able to recall whatever is required, rather comfortably. Puzzles pose problems to the brain that help it to use new pathways and neurons, which give the brain considerable exercise. It taxes the left brain to use logic to solve the myriad possibilities which other activities do not stimulate. Crosswords are excellent for vocabulary learning and use. Jigsaws and Rubik cube stimulate different permutations to finally settle on the most likely one. Picture completion and anagrams help approach problem solving from several angles. Do Sudoku, and memory co-relation activities and skills. Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber (whole grains, fruits and vegetables), nuts, avocado, eat dark chocolate, consume less of fat and use olive oil instead, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. He needs to check out if he is stronger visual or auditory. The visual is a better mode than the auditory. However, if he combines the two modes, he will get the best concentration and recall. Short-term memory is a faculty of the left brain, and long-term memory is a feature of the right brain. When people are stressed, they tend to favor the right brain and abandon the left brain, where short-term memory resides. So, it is really very simple: deal with the stress and activate left brain functions. Here are a few suggestions to activate left brain function: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. There are some memory enhancing techniques and study methods that are too long to elaborate here but he can seek that from some courses. If his home life is full of distractions and stress, it is likely to affect his memory, adversely. In that case, I suggest that the family goes for counseling.

I am suffered from oppressive compulsive symptom in which I see faces of different people in my mind only during my study time I am in treatment with aiims delhi since 3 months who treated with medicine name" flunil- 20 mg" one day \night I want to medicine is good for me or not and how much it take to overcome from this disease ? This medicine is good for you but you also need to work with a counselor for some behavior modification program to expose you to the situations that cause obsessions and compulsions to gradually de-condition you. OCD is not a lifelong disorder and will over time reduce in intensity. Therapy hastens this process and together with the medication you can work through it better. It is related to fear and so emotional therapy will go a long way to alleviate symptoms and the underlying causes. You need to stay committed and remain cooperative right through the treatment.

My child (6 year old) was normal all thorough the day. But all of a sudden she started acting like an abnormal child. There is no record of her doing anything like that before. What can be the reason behind this sudden change in her behaviour.

Better go for a psychiatric evaluation by a paediatric psychiatrist/clinical psychologist to rule out any developmental disability. Early intervention is half cure.

Hi doctor, I am a 13 years old girl. I always get angry with everybody when someone shouts at me or scold me. I always get angry for silly reasons and I can't control my anger at that time. What will I do for it? how will I control my anger?

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
You don?t have to control your anger; you must learn to express it properly. However, there may be a problem with how angry you get and for small reasons too. Since you are already displaying so much anger at such an early age, it indicates that there was something that had happened in your early childhood, including prenatal life, which is contributing to this situation. Your mom will know what that is all about, and equipped with that information meet with a counselor soon. When such signs come in early adolescence, it is advisable to take care of it promptly. In fact it will be easier to work on it now than later when the anger behavior will be too entrenched to remove easily. In the meantime go for regular and vigorous exercise daily, preferably the aerobic kind. Also you must introspect whether you are actually scared but choosing to act angry because it is a power feeling compared to being in fear. In that case you need to handle the fear and not the anger and your problems will cease to trouble you. Even so you must then find out about why there is so much fear in your life at this stage.

I got married recently a girl. Before marriage I used to have girl frend. After marriage my girl frend is showing interest on me. At present my wife is at her home. So my ex girl frend is coming to meet me and have sex. Is this correct? If not, how to avoid it?

Dear user. I can understand. The present scenario is not correct for any Indian household. You are actually cheating your wife who has trust on you. By having sex with another woman you are breaching her trust. You should tell your past girl friend to keep herself away from you and your family. Take care.

General Physician,
Work–related stress can kill

Job stress raises the risk of heart disease by disrupting the body’s internal systems.

The findings from a long–running study involving more than 10,000 British civil servants also suggest that stress–induced biological changes may play a more direct role than previously thought.

The researchers measured stress among the civil servants by asking questions about their job demands such as how much control they had at work, how often they took breaks, and how pressed for time they were during the day.

The team conducted seven surveys over a 12–year period and found chronically stressed workers – people determined to be under severe pressure in the first two of the surveys – had a 68 percent higher risk of developing heart disease. The link was strongest among people under 50.

Stressed workers also eat unhealthy food, smoke, drink and skip exercise – all behaviors linked to heart disease.

In the study, stressed workers also had lowered heart rate variability – a sign of a poorly–functioning weak heart and higher than normal levels of cortisol, a "stress" hormone that provides a burst of energy for a fight–or–flight response.

Too much cortisol circulating in the blood stream can damage blood vessels and the heart.

YOu have depression and anxiety .If you feel depressed, it's best to do something about it — depression doesn't just go away on its own. In addition to getting help from a doctor or therapist, here are 5 things you can do to feel better. And if these are not useful you need antidepressants 1. Exercise. Take a 15- to 30-minute brisk walk every day — or dance, jog, or bike if you prefer. People who are depressed may not feel much like being active. In addition to getting aerobic exercise, some yoga poses can help relieve feelings of depression. Two other aspects of yoga — breathing exercises and meditation — can also help people with depression feel better. 2. Nurture yourself with good nutrition. Depression can affect appetite. One person may not feel like eating at all, but another might overeat.. Proper nutrition can influence a person's mood and energy. So eat plenty of fruits and vegetables and get regular meals (even if you don't feel hungry, try to eat something light, like a piece of fruit, to keep you going). 3. Identify troubles, but don't dwell on them. Try to identify any situations that have contributed to your depression. When you know what's got you feeling blue and why, talk about it with a caring friend. Talking is a way to release the feelings and to receive some understanding. 4. Express yourself. With depression, a person's creativity and sense of fun may seem blocked. Exercise your imagination (painting, drawing, doodling, sewing, writing, dancing, composing music, etc.) and you not only get those creative juices flowing, you also loosen up some positive emotions. Take time to play with a friend or a pet, or do something fun for yourself. Find something to laugh about — a funny movie, perhaps. Laughter helps lighten your mood. 5. Try to notice good things. Depression affects a person's thoughts, making everything seem dismal, negative, and hopeless. If depression has you noticing only the negative, make an effort to notice the good things in life. Try to notice one thing, then try to think of one more. Consider your strengths, gifts, or blessings. Most of all, don't forget to be patient with yourself. Depression takes time to heal. If you are happy with these answers please click on "useful” link so that I can know my efforts are not wasted. If you want more clarifications or prescription for medicines consult me on this site to ask me directly and not in open questions session It's not easy to say exactly what causes depression and anxiety – it's different for everyone. Sometimes a difficult time in you or your mates' life can set off depression or anxiety, sometimes it's caused by a combination of things that has built up over time and sometimes, there's just no obvious cause at all.
