When people are very scared they tend to increase urination and may increase bowel movement. You should meet with a counselor and deal with your fear. The stress that you feel is not dependent on the stressor: It is entirely dependent on your perception of stress. Life is difficult no doubt, as a general rule, but what we do adds to the stress in our response. We add to the stress of life instead of reducing it or learning to deal with it. Many of us follow a policy of avoidance. We cannot do that all of our lives. So the first thing to do is to change your perception. For example, look at it as a challenge that you would like to meet with a positive outlook. See everything as a gift from God to perform as though you are doing it for Him. God never gives us work to do beyond our capacity. Build a good constitution mentally, emotionally and physically to combat stress. Eat healthily, sleep well, and exercise regularly. Talk about your emotions regularly to a good friend or counselor every day. Learn stress management techniques. Do Yoga and meditation. Pray every day to God to give you the strength, and offer your work as a prayer to Him – you will give your best and you will feel so satisfied when you do it well.

My wife is 47 years old and she is suffering from mental tension/disease. Her behavior is always to suspicious about me. She thinks that I am related with other women in office without knowing facts.

1. Do you both spend time together? if this doesn't happen and she sees you spending more time in the office, then it could be one reason to mistrust you even though you are not to blame. She wants your attention which she may not be getting enough. 2. How is your sexual life with each other? if it's not satisfactory then again such doubts will come in marriage. 3. Do you have differences with each other which haven't been resolved yet and are causing tension between you two? then she might be using this blame to cast you in a perpetrator role and put herself in victim role. These things happen in marriage as there are many expectations from each other. Marriage is built on pillars of respect, trust, open communication and time with each other. If any of these go out of balance then there will be complications in marriage. It comes with lot of compromise, understanding, acceptance and forgiveness. Counselling can help you sort out marital issues and help you put your marriage back on track. Both of you can attend couple counselling in your city. If you have any queries, then please contact me on private chat.

Your smoking habit cannot be detected by X ray if yu smoke only a few. Best age to stop smoking is before 40 ,In fact do not start all Only by using strong will power and avoiding all situations where you feel like smoking, chewing tobacco or drinking or using drugs/ weed, avoiding friends who smoke and diverting mind by reading or chewing a gum, like NICORETTE and taking a walk when you crave for a smoke can all help. You can chew Nicorette gum which is nicotine replacement. There are medicines available. Which can be prescribed if asked personally Cigarette smoking is a leading preventable cause of mortality. It kills more than 60 lakh people worldwide every year. More than 50% of regular smokers would invariably die from tobacco-related illnesses which includes heart attack, cancer or asthmatic lung diseases. Best age to stop smoking is before 40.

Hello Mr. lybrate-user I hope you are having positive effects of the medicine you are presently taking. As it always varies from person to person. But in case you have never tried for psychotherapy, you should give it a try. As it always is beneficial to work on your PSYCHOLOGICAL part of anxiety. Though you can continue your medication, CBT from a professional PSYchologist will have positive impact on you, if you have willpower to do so. Take help!

Fear of Dirt or Contamination - Can it be a Sign of OCD?

MD - Psychiatry, Diploma in Child & Adolescent Psychology , MBBS
Psychiatrist, Pune
Fear of Dirt or Contamination - Can it be a Sign of OCD?

Obsessive compulsive disorder is a condition, which is characterized by a constant occurrence of compulsive behavior and obsessive thoughts. People across all ages are affected by this condition; in some cases, it might start early whereas, in others, it develops around the early years of childhood. This is a very distressing condition as it can cause significant interference in your daily life. It is recommended to get it treated at the earliest to manage its symptoms effectively.

Symptoms

Obsessive compulsive disorder causes an obsession about an unwanted (forbidden or unfounded) thought, urge or an image. This obsession may result in disgust, unease and feelings of anxiety. A compulsion is defined as a certain behavior that is usually repetitive, something that you tend to do over and over again to get rid of the constant anxiety. An example would be to constantly check the windows of the house resulting from an uncorroborated fear that the house may be burgled.

The causes of obsessive compulsive disorder are:

  1. Chemical imbalances in the brain marked by low serotonin levels
  2. Family history of OCD
  3. People who are meticulous, neat and methodical might develop OCD
  4. Certain traumatic events such as having been bullied or abused can also cause OCD

Treatment

There are multiple treatment options. The aim of the treatments is to manage the symptoms and improve the quality of life. The treatments are:

  1. Medications: Certain antidepressants that alter the chemical imbalance in the brain can treat OCD.
  2. Psychological therapy: Counselling or cognitive behavioral therapy is very effective in treating OCD. Cognitive behavioral therapy aims to modify one’s thinking pattern and get rid of unnecessary fears and thoughts. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor and ask a free question.

Simply engage mind in better activities like reading, hearing nice talks or music and keeping mind busy in services. Eating vegetarian foods and fruits and drinking cow's milk in night before sleeping also helps.

Dear, at your age, memory problems like amnesia are not common. Many young people are having problems with memory. These problems are either they are too busy or due to anxiety and stress. Busy people use organizers or employ a personal assistant because they can't remember every task. You need to understand this. If you still say, you are having memory problems, we need to check your memory using memory test. If you want more of my help in this regard, please contact me. Take care.

Hello Lybrate user, Try these techniques: 1. Try to get full sleep. Take at least six hour rest for refreshment and relaxation of your mind. A fresh mind can concentrate more easily. 2. Take regular exercise. Brain takes its nutrients from blood for functioning properly. Physical exercise speeds up blood circulation to brain and brain gets well nourished as well as brain gets rid of waste products. Physical exercise is necessary for enhancing power of concentration. 3. Study in a place with no or less distractions. Your study place should be free from such things which may absorb your attention, i. E television, music, changing color bulbs, maps etc. Similarly study in quiet place free from sound distractions. 4. Avoid multi-tasking. While you study avoid playing with other things. Like you study as well as texting to friends on cell phone or making hair styles or one eye on television and one eye on book. Similarly study one subject in one time. 5. Have free mind. Throw off your mind all the irrelevant thoughts while you study. If you are obsessed by a certain idea, try to find a solution to your problem first. Stress makes it difficult to concentrate. 6. Fixation of priorities. Fixation of priorities, what should be done first and what should be done next, is very important for having full concentration in your work. If you don’t fix your priorities and work haphazardly, it is more likely you start thinking while doing one task “shouldn’t I do the other task first as that is more important”. This thought will not let you work with concentration. Make time-table for your subject and follow it. 7. Take short breaks in long study. If you study for a long time, you get bore and can’t maintain concentration on work. You should refresh your mind by taking short breaks to maintain your concentration on study. 8. Have interest in your study. Lack of motivation and interest leads to boredom and dividend attention so develop your interest in your studies. 9. Have good breakfast. Your breakfast should contain items with high protein content, carbohydrates and low sugar content. When you get up from sleep, have good diet though normally you should take light diet. 10. Don’t take too much tea or coffee. Tea or coffee has caffeine that gives you more strength for sometime but soon leaves you sluggish. 11. Concentration Exercises. There some exercises which improve your power of concentration i. E. Yoga, self-hypnosis, looking at a round spot on wall with full attention etc. There are books on these things you can study.
