Please don't give any medication for sleep. It takes one year for babies to adjust to the circadian rhythm. Ensure she is not hungry. And not having any issue like colic. Or any kind of discomfort. Make her play throughout the day. And she will surely sleep.

I have a daughter who is 8.5 years old. Actually her problem is that she does not want to eat and she is underweight. Whatever she eats she eats with water. What should I do sir?

M.D PEADIATRICS, MBBS
Pediatrician, Pune
Hello lybrate-user, you have not mentioned your daughter's weight, which should b between 26-28kg. What I will advice is do not force her to eat, let her demand food, & serve only heathy food items avoiding junk food like bakery products, all kinds of wafers, chocolets etc. Pl make sure that she has salad & fresh fruits daily. Treat constipation if that is the case, deworm her every 6 months. If she is falling sick often she needs to b seen &investigated by Dr. I hope this solves your problem. All the best!

My son is 15 months old. He has got 3-4 teeth. and few are about to come. When is a good time to start with brushing? Also he still isn't standing or walking on his own. But he does stand up holding sofa, chair n also walks holding them. A few doc said its OK up to 18 months. So should we wait for few months or see a physio? As 3-4 docs v consulted said a strict NO for walker.

What is Rickets? How to Prevent Your CHILD From the Disorder?

Diploma in Child Health (DCH), MBBS
Pediatrician, Gurgaon
What is Rickets? How to Prevent Your CHILD From the Disorder?

A nutritional disorder, the problem of rickets occurs if your child suffers from a deficiency of calcium, phosphate or Vitamin D. It causes softened and damaged bones, skeletal deformities, impaired development of the bone's growth plate (a spot of growing tissue found near the end of a long bone in adolescents and children) and stunted growth.

Here are few very simple ways you can prevent your child from getting it:

1. Having Vitamin D and calcium rich foods - One of the best ways to prevent this nutritional disorder from affecting your child is by making sure he or she have foods that are high in Vitamin D and calcium. Egg yolks, fish oil or fatty fish like salmon and mackerel are some of the Vitamin D foods that your child can have to strengthen his bones. Even foods that have Vitamin D added to it such as cereals, orange juice, milk and infant formula can also be given to your child. Sources of calcium can be soyabeans, nuts, broccoli, cabbage, cheese and yoghurt.

2. Going out in the sun - Considered to be an excellent source of Vitamin D, getting your child exposed to sunlight is another excellent way of getting most of this nutrient, as well as preventing him or her from developing rickets. Although the exposure time may vary from individual to individual, about 10-15 minutes of sun exposure without sunscreen can help.

3. Having Vitamin D supplements - Even the consumption of Vitamin D supplements can reduce your child's risk of getting rickets. Since mother's milk contains less than the recommended Vitamin D amount, infants too need to be put on Vitamin D supplements of 400 IU each day. For teenagers and young children, the recommended dosage is 600 IU of Vitamin D every day.

Probably he is suffering from breath holding condition. If it is breath holding, it may go on its own after some time and earlier if you do not pay attention to it. But it is better to consult pediatrician to ascertain real ailment as he suffered from seizure in infancy.

Are there any long-term effects associated with taking ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) medications? If so, what are they and what medications are implicated? What exactly is a spine block injection? Will it work long-term for low back pain due to disc problems? What causes Hashimoto's thyroiditis, and what is the best method of treatment? Can iodine help this condition?

Ask the child to gargle with lukewarm water with some pinch of salt in it. Even a mouthwash gargle would be better option to gargle. Do not let the child swallow the mouthwash. This should be done atleast thrice in a day.

My son is almost a yr old. Birthday on 6th may. He crawls and stands up holding something, but hasn' t started walking yet. Wat seems to be wrong?

Pediatrician, Pune
Nothing wrong, only god has not made everyone to be like tendulkar, there are some amir khans, some amitabh bacchans, some lata mangeshkars and many million unknown people, but they are not the same, some children walk early, some little late, if it is within the average normal range, we have just a habit to compare and needlessly worry.

The ression behind such kind of behaviour can be copping of family members who behaves like this or if child has started beliving that should be rewarded. So you have to find out why your child behave like this.

If the baby is exclusively breastfed it can not be diarrhoea. Breastfed babies usually pass frequent semisolid stools following feeding.

PCV RV: This third dose may be needed, depending on the brand of vaccine used in previous RV immunizations. 6 months and annually Influenza (Flu): The flu vaccine is recommended every year for children 6 months and older: Kids younger than 9 who get the flu vaccine for the first time (or who have only had one dose before July 2016) will get it in two separate doses at least a month apart. Those younger than 9 who have had at least two doses of flu vaccine previously (in the same or different seasons) will only need one dose. Kids older than 9 only need one dose. The vaccine is given by injection with a needle (the flu shot). The nasal spray form that was available in the past is not currently recommended because it was not found to be effective enough in recent years. 6–18 months HepB IPV.
