Tampons Vs Sanitary Napkins - Which One Should You Use?

DNB, DGO, MBBS

Tampons Vs Sanitary Napkins - Which One Should You Use?

During the menstrual days, it is necessary to use some kind of padding or easily absorbent material to remain clean and hygienic throughout the day. This material is available in form of tampons or sanitary napkins.

What is the difference between tampons and sanitary napkin

  1. The tampon is a mass of retentive material shaped in a cylinder, which needs to be inserted into the vagina. Most tampons have a cord or string to aid manual removal. Tampons are used especially when you have to wear tight fitting clothes.
  2. The sanitary napkins are disposable flat pads that are worn externally to collect menstrual blood and prevent staining. These are mostly made of rayon or cotton. They are available in a variety of sizes, with added benefits of extra absorption and fragrance in some cases. They are easier to carry.

Benefits of using a tampon

  1. Tampons are easy to use provided you are very well informed and well practiced about its usage and methods of insertion
  2. Tampons can absorb menstrual blood, depending on your flow, for up to six hours.
  3. Tampons are more hygienic as the entire material does not get soaked. This helps in preventing the menstrual blood from coming in contact with underwear, skin and staining other clothing.

Disadvantages of using a tampon

  1. Tampons, if not changed within 4-6 hours, may cause leakage and staining.
  2. The insertion of a tampon is extremely inconvenient and uncomfortable if not used by practiced hands.
  3. Incorrect insertion can be painful and lead to injuries and infection
  4. Leaving a tampon on for too long can cause a Toxic Shock Syndrome. It is a fatal disease caused by toxins and bacterial infection.
  5. Tampons may increase menstrual cramps in some cases.

Benefits of using sanitary napkins

  1. Sanitary napkins are easy to use. They come in flat, rectangular shapes of absorbent material that are stuck on the underwear and absorb menstrual blood externally.
  2. Can be worn overnight.
  3. Easier to use and convenient to carry around.
  4. Helps to monitor the flow of blood
  5. Lessens the risk of infections, and there are fewer health risks

Disadvantages of sanitary napkins

  1. Cannot prevent menstrual odours
  2. The absorption rate is lower than tampons
  3. They show through clothing and tight fitted clothes cannot be worn

It is difficult to say which one is a better or healthier option. Both kinds have their own advantages and disadvantages and are a matter of individual preference. No matter what you use, it is important for you to keep in mind that it is necessary to change it after a few hours, and regular washing helps keeping the menstrual odour in check. It also keeps the pubic region clean and free from the risks of bacterial infections. It is necessary to remain active and maintain a healthy diet to have a regular smooth flow without blood clots. In case of uncontrolled bleeding, you must seek medical attention without delay. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a gynaecologist and ask a free question.

Sir my sisters daughter is not going for bathroom since 4 days she is 45 days old plzz help.
Look for her hydration. If she is well hydrated, put your hand at her lower middle abdomen if you feel it tense, it means urine is retained in bladder. Even otherwise too, consult pediatrician immediately.

My mother 34 year old woman and have feel so weakness for last one month. What should I do now?
Hi, lack of energy could be owing to a host of reasons--nutrient deficiencies, sporadic sleep cycles, under-eating and subsequently overeating, dehydration, skipping breakfast to name only a few reasons. To regain energy, ensure you drink ample water through the day and that your meals are wholesome and complete and that your daily diet includes fruits and fresh vegetables. Hope this helps. Do get in touch with us if you have any further queries.

Hai Dr. I having PCOD problem and still I am not get pregnant what can I do for that?
Hello, PCOS or pcod s a problem in which a woman's hormones are out of balance. It can cause problems with your periods and make it difficult to get pregnant. PCOS also may cause unwanted changes in the way you look. If it isn't treated, over time it can lead to serious health problems, such as diabetes and heart disease. The most common symptoms are: Acne.Weight gain and trouble losing weight.Extra hair on the face and body.Thinning hair or even hair loss on scalp.Irregular periods. Often women with PCOS have fewer than nine periods a year. Some women have no periods. Others have very heavy bleeding.Fertility problems. Many women who have PCOS have trouble getting pregnant(infertility), depression. Regular exercise, healthy foods, and weight control are the key treatments for PCOS. Treatment (hormonal) can reduce unpleasant symptoms and help prevent long-term health problems. Try to fit in moderate activity and/or vigorous activity often. Brisk Walking, jogging, dance or aerobics are great exercise that most people can do.Eat heart-healthy foods. This includes lots of vegetables, fruits, nuts, beans, and whole grains. It limits foods that are high insaturated fat, such as meats, cheeses, and fried foods. Most women who have PCOS can benefit from losing weight. Even losing 5kg may help get your hormones in balance, regulate your menstrual cycle and can make you ovulate.

Can Pelvic Inflammatory Disease Prove to be Fatal?

Can Pelvic Inflammatory Disease Prove to be Fatal?

Pelvic Inflammatory disease (PID) is a bacterial infection that affects a woman’s reproductive organs. This disease is not contagious though men can host and transmit the bacteria that triggered the disease through intercourse. Chlamydia (know more about Chlamydia disease) and gonorrhea are the two most common causes of this disease. Apart from being transmitted sexually, this disease can also develop through the insertion of an unsterilized contraception device into the vagina or during a gynecological procedure such as an abortion. In rare cases, normal bacteria from the vagina can also spread into the uterus and fallopian tubes triggering this disease.

PID can be fatal and should not be ignored. Lower abdominal pain is the primary symptom of this disease. This pain can vary from being mild to be seriously debilitating. Other symptoms of this condition are:

  1. Abnormal or foul vaginal discharge.

  2. Painful intercourse that may be accompanied by bleeding.

  3. Irregular periods.

  4. Spotting between periods.

  5. Severe menstrual cramps.

  6. Burning sensation while urinating.

  7. Urge to frequently urinate and an inability to empty the bladder.

  8. Swollen abdomen.

  9. High fever alternating with chills.

  10. Swollen lymph nodes.

  11. Diminished appetite with nausea.

  12. Weakness and depression.

  13. Lowered libido.

PID can often produce a pus-like fluid that scars the reproductive organs. This can result in infertility. This risk is influenced by the duration and severity of the infection along with the number of times it recurs. Women suffering from pelvic inflammatory disease are also at a higher risk of having a tubal pregnancy. This type of pregnancy is fatal for the baby and also threatens the life of the mother.

In cases where the disease is triggered by an STD like gonorrhea or Chlamydia, it can also spread to the liver tissues. This is a complication known as the Fitz Hugh Curtis syndrome and causes a collection of pus in the form of an abscess in the fallopian tubes or ovaries. If this abscess ruptures, the pus would spread into the pelvic cavity causing severe pain, nausea and a fall in blood pressure. If it spreads further into the blood stream, it can be fatal.

Diagnosis of this disease is difficult as its symptoms are usually mild and common to a number of other conditions. However, once diagnosed, it can be easily treated through antibiotic medication. Surgery is required only in cases where there is no response to antibiotics or if an abscess bursts or is at a stage where it may. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a and ask a free question.

If your pregnancy test is positive and you do not want a pregnancy you will have to undergo a abortion. If it is negative you or your partner will have to use some contraceptive. Your partner can use a condom.

I got married recently. Im nt getting my period it has 10 days delayed. We are not planning for baby so please suggest me the medicine.

M.B.S.(HOMEO), MD - Homeopathy

First important thing to prevent pregnancy to maintain the safe period that is: menstrual cycles have several days at the beginning that are infertile (pre-ovulatory infertility), a period of fertility, and then several days just before the next menstruation that are infertile (post-ovulatory infertility). The first day of bleeding is considered day one of the menstrual cycle. In this safe period calculator, days 1 to 7 and day 21 to rest of the cycle is calculated as" safe period" or" safe days" for individuals with regular 26-32 days cycles. Plese read the method overview for more information. Proper use of safe period calculation method along with coitus interruptus (withdrawal method or pull-out method) is a suggested as a sin free or green family planning method for couples with self control over sexuality. Withdrawal method is not suggested for adolescents or those having casual sex. Others may use condoms during unsafe days to avoid serious and potentially life-threatening risks associated with the use of contraceptive pills.

You cannot tell in 2 days whether you are pregnant or not. The middle ten days between periods are the most unsafe days. So you can calculate yourself.

I have a small lump on the nipple of my left breast, on the down-left side, roughly for about 2 years. I also have sharp stinging pains in both the breasts, mostly left breast, roughly for about a year and a half. What do I do?

MBBS, MS - General Surgery, MRCS (Edinburgh), Fellowship In Breast Surgery, Fellowship In Onco-plastic Breast Surgery
Oncologist, Gurgaon
Hi Between the age of 15-25 years, benign (non cancerous) lumps in the breast (fibroadenomas) are very common. They are usually painless but can sometimes cause pain. Another cause of breast pain could be the hormonal changes during your periods. You should get an ultrasound of the breast, to make sure that the lump is not suspicious. If it is a small fibroadenoma, it can be managed non-operatively.
