Correct Posture In Pregnancy

Posture is the position in which you hold your body upright against gravity while standing, sitting or lying down. 
Do you have a good or bad posture? As you are reading this, how is your posture right now? Are you sitting upright? are you slouching your back? have you totally sunk into your chair?
Good posture isn't just about looks. How we sit, stand, and walk affect our health. 
In pregnancy, different changes occur in a woman's body which affect her posture. As baby grows, the rest of her body shifts to make room for the growing belly (and the added weight!). Her lower back will gradually start to curve more, and her shoulders may also move back a bit to make up for the shifting center of gravity and enlarging uterus. Plus, late in pregnancy, the abdominal muscles of some women separate, which can lead to a change in posture.

Effects of bad posture in pregnancy are-
1) neck pain

2) back pain
3) shoulder pain
4) increased urination
5) poor breathing
6) poor digestion
7) tension headaches
If your are having any of the above mentioned problems, then rush to your physiotherapist for your detailed postual evaluation. She may teach you a few exercises also to correct your posture.

Few good posture tips:
*lift your chest up
*look forward 
*imagine you are being pulled upwards from your head by a piece of string 
*tilt your hips underneath you
*avoid sitting with crossed legs
*avoid standing on one hip or weight on one side
*avoid carrying small children on the same side.

Antenatal Exercises: What, Why And How?

Antenatal exercises are specifically designed to prepare the body for parturition/birth. Fitness for the expectant mother includes a combination of breathing techniques, prenatal yoga or stretches, and exercises that strengthen core muscles (especially the back and pelvic floor), boost stamina and enhance energy levels.
The specially patterned breathing helps in aiding relaxation, relieving stress, and coping through contractions and labour.

Benefits of exercises in pregnancy:
1) improves blood flow - the increased oxygen is passed on to your baby
2) releases'happy hormones' which make you feel good
3) prepares your body for late pregnancy when you will carry that extra weight

4) prepares your body for childbirth - it's not called labour for nothing!
5) shorten the labor process
6) Increase the chances of a natural birth
7) decrease the need for pain relief
8) keeps your muscles toned so that they will recover more quickly after birth.

Tips and cautions:-

  • Women who were exercising regularly before pregnancy, and who are healthy during pregnancy, should be able to continue exercising as before, with slight changes depending on the trimester.
  • Women who have not been exercising before pregnancy will benefit from taking up a low-intensity program and gradually move to a higher activity level.
  • Exercise is recommended for 20 to 30 minutes each day, on most days. Most exercises are safe to perform during pregnancy if done with caution.

Almost 90% of smartphone users spend most of their time on their phones. Whatsapp, facebook, twitter, instagram, games. This addiction is not only heavy on our data packs and pockets, but are equally damaging to our neck and back. During neutral position of neck, there are about 10-12 pounds of force working on the cervical spine (neck). The force increases in proportion to the bending angle of our neck. Have a look at the attached picture.

The simplest solution to avoid this damage to our neck and hence development of cervical spondylosis is to hold the phone at eye level!

There is pain at the left side in the back. In addition, the lower ab sometimes give pain. But the major pain is at the back and left leg.

Hello Back pain is multifactorial in nature, and its accurate treatment depends upon its cause. please tell since when u r having pain.. does movement in crease or decrease ur pain?

I am 77years, had accidental fall in may 14 at bangalore no injury or problem but diagonised BP 140 ,,70 asked to have regular check from time to time it varies from 140/80 to 140/7o till date rescribed tel press 40 mg daily morning. earlier never went to any dr. am i continue now advice.

yes you must continue with your prescribed drugs for hypertension. also start with medium speed walking for at least 30-40 minutes a day, three times a week. It will help in regulating your blood pressure.

what is the optimum level of sio2% in the human body and when to attend doctor and hospitalisation

optimal oxygen saturation for healthy adult varies from 94% and above. But this could be as low as 70% in a COPD patient and still acceptable. clinically medical help can be sought as when the symptoms like breathlessness, mental confusion, cold limbs etc arises.
