I have been asked to consume glycomet SR 500 tablets thrice daily before meals due to pre diabetic conditions. Started in Jan this yr. How safe is it to consume for a yr? Does it automatically result in wt loss without any exercise? Are there any side effects?

Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. The information is very scanty. I need to know what are the fasting & PP glucose levels & HbA1c%? Normally we do not give any medication for prediabetes. In your case the main problem is your excess weight. If you cut down that by even 5 to 8 % the glucose levels will come down. Your ideal body weight should be only 65 kgs, that means there are 25 kgs extra. This is an invitation for diabetes. Metformin is a safe drug, but weight reduction alone will bring down the glucose levels back to normal. Thanks.

The drug has to be used in in caution in oatients with renal and liver disease, lactic acidosis and gastric upset are major side effect of this drug, it is safe to consume for a year or more. It will not lead to weight loss without exercise.
