Piles, fistula and fissures all occur in the anal region. Although all these conditions are frequently clubbed together, they are not the same. Although the treatment methods for these conditions are similar in nature.

Before we get to the treatment part, here is an overview of all the three conditions –

Piles

Piles, also known as haemorrhoids, are common during pregnancy and affect almost 75% of people who are over 50 years of age. The condition is not dangerous, but they are very painful when they cause bleeding around the anus.

Piles occur when a cluster of veins near the anus is inflamed. They can be both external and internal. Internal haemorrhoids form in the lower rectum – they then protrude from the anus. External haemorrhoids develop in the skin around the anus – you may feel a hard lump around the anus.

Many people don’t realize they have piles because at times the symptoms disappear in a few days.

Anal fissures

When there is a tear in the anal lining, it is called an anal fissure. The symptoms are bleeding during bowel movements and pain. This condition is very common in infants. Adults may have fissures from extended periods of passing hard stool or diarrhoea. In older people, they develop due to the reduction in blood flow and increased tension in the sphincter muscles.

Those suffering from Crohn’s disease are vulnerable to this condition.

Anal fistulas

Anal fistulas occur from abscesses that form in the anus. An abscess occurs when small glands in the anal region get clogged and turn infected. A fistula is a channel that forms under the skin connecting the gland to the abscess.

Advance treatment for piles, fissures, and fistula

The advance treatment for these conditions is laser surgery. In this treatment, laser energy is used to shrink the affected nodes. The blood supply to the affected areas is also stopped with the help of laser, which in turn ensures that the abnormal growth doesn’t receive nourishment.

This method has many benefits –

  1. You can resume your daily routine quickly

  2. Very less pain

  3. The recovery period is shorter

  4. It is a day care procedure

  5. The chances of complications are less
