Liposuction - Know Merits Of It!

Stubborn fat pockets that cling to the body are a matter of concern for most people these days. The fat primarily accumulates around the buttocks, belly, arms and chin, and this can make you look unfit and unattractive. Exercise and diet alone are not enough to get rid of the fat pockets in these body parts. Thankfully, with the advent of new-age technology, removing excess fat from specific problem areas is possible with liposuction.

Liposuction is a body contouring procedure that eliminates excess fat and leaves you with a smooth, toned body that you can flaunt confidently.

Different types of liposuction procedure

There are different types of the procedure, so you get a handful of options to choose from-

• Tumescent Liposuction - Involves injecting a sterile solution containing salt water, epinephrine and lidocaine into the targeted area. This is the most common and preferred way to get rid of excess fat since the mixture of fluids makes it easier to suction the fat with minimal pain and bleeding.

• Ultrasound-Assisted Liposuction (UAL) - With the use of ultrasonic vibrations, the fat cells are turned into liquid and are later vacuumed out.

Laser-Assisted Liposuction (LAL) - Laser energy is used to liquefy the fat cells. The liquefied cells are eventually drained out through a small tube.

The dermatologist will recommend any of the above procedures, depending on the area from which you want to reduce fat.

Liposuction: Steps of the procedure

• Before beginning with the liposuction procedure, the surgeon will mark specific areas on your body that will be operated
• The surgeon will administer local/general anaesthesia to numb the area before operating
• He/she will insert a suction tube with a sharp edge (known as a cannula) into the fat pockets through small incisions and sweep through the area from where fat needs to be removed
• Next, he/she will vacuum away the displaced liquefied fat through the suction tube
• The surgeon may perform multiple punctures on the skin to treat the targeted areas and get the best shape
• Once the excess fat is removed from the pockets, the surgeon may insert drainage tubes to remove fluid and blood that accumulates during the surgery
• In case you lose too much blood or fluid during the procedure, you may require fluid replacement (intravenously) or a blood transfusion (in rare cases)
• After the surgery, the doctor will advise you to wear compression garments to minimize discomfort and quicken the healing process

Benefits of liposuction surgery

If you are still in a dilemma whether you should go for the surgery, here is a look at the several benefits of liposuction-

• It is a safe procedure with minor side effects such as swelling and bruising
• It is an outpatient procedure. This means you can walk out of the clinic/hospital the same day you undergo the surgery.
• The results are long-lasting

Complete recovery after the surgery takes place within 2 weeks, after which you can resume your normal activities.

Liposuction thus helps smooth away stubborn fat pockets that refuse to go away even after spending hours at the gym. The procedure not only leaves you with a well-toned, slimmer figure but also enhances your confidence and self-esteem. Consult a dermatologist and discuss the pros and cons of the procedure before you go for it.
