Hypertension or high blood pressure is common among pregnant women and also raises serious concerns. In medical terms, hypertension during pregnancy is called as gestational hypertension. Its few leading causes during this phase include hormone-related imbalances, nutritional deficiencies, age and obesity.

Treating hypertension is really important for your health and the baby growing inside you. This is because if you have hypertension, the development of the fetus could also be affected. There are different types of blood-pressure conditions that affect during pregnancy, including chronic hypertension, chronic hypertension with preeclampsia, or just preeclampsia.

Manage hypertension through these easy ways:

  • Stay active: Maintaining an active routine is extremely important while you are pregnant. It can help in improving your cardiovascular health and also, lower your blood pressure levels. Additionally, this ensures the release of the ‘feel-good’ hormones known as endorphins. They help to keep you in a positive state of mind.
  • Say no to alcohol and tobacco intake: As a result of smoking tobacco or drinking alcohol, there could be an imbalance in the blood pressure levels.
  • Anti-hypertensive drugs: If your doctor finds it suitable for you to take blood pressure medications then make sure you follow his or her suggestions. He or she will do so only after studying your physical condition, even though these drugs are not advised for regular consumption during pregnancy.
  • Go for regular check-ups: Always visit your doctor for regular check-ups to ensure that your blood pressure levels are within a normal range. The medical professionals will check the fetus’s health as well during the visit.
  • Controlling hypertension before pregnancy: You can take some measures to keep your blood pressure levels within the normal range even before pregnancy.
  • Eat healthyYou must increase intake of fresh fruits and vegetables to provide sufficient nutrients to your body. Also, the consumption of potassium-rich foods is advised to reduce the strain on blood vessels and subsequently, monitoring of the blood pressure levels. And, you must strictly limit your salt intake.

Though there is no magic rule to prevent hypertension during pregnancy, however, with a few measures like the ones mentioned above can always help in managing your blood pressure quite well.
