This is a parasitic disease which is also known as river blindness. In this condition, infected blackflies that breed in rapidly flowing rivers and streams can come to create embryonic larvae which can affect the skin and other organs of the body. The main symptoms include inflammation and skin lesions.
HOW IS ONCHOCERCIASIS DIAGNOSED?
Diagnosis of the same is done by an ophthalmologist or general physician who would do a vision test along with biopsy of some skin parts to check for bacteria.
HOW IS ONCHOCERCIASIS TREATED?
It is highly recommended to start off with the Ivermectin and antibiotic treatment here because infestation may lead to complete blindness. These drugs activate the glutamate-gated chloride channels and help fight the infection.
