About Sulfamethopyrazine

Sulfamethopyrazine is used to treat chronic respiratory problems such as chronic bronchitis. It may also be administered for the use of urinary tract infection, malaria and a few other diseases as per your doctor’s discretion. The main mechanism of its action is to inhibit the growth and thereby kill disease-causing parasites.     How does this medication work?

    This medicine acts as a competitive inhibitor of dihydropteroate synthetase, a bacterial enzyme. Aminobenzoic acid (PABA) is a substrate of dihydropteroate synthetase that is hindered from combining. In order for synthesis of folic acid to take place, this inhibition reaction is absolutely necessary.
