Retinopathy is complications of diabetes. Keep your diabetes strictly controlled. Go for regular eye check up find out retinopathy is stable or worsening so that it can be treated timely. Ignorance can lead to permanent vision loss. Follow up with your endocrinologist and ophthalmologist as they advise.

LASIK Eye Surgery - Facts About It!

LASIK Eye Surgery - Facts About It!

While spectacles are a fashion statement for some people, for others they are an uncomfortable necessity. Though contact lenses may be a little more aesthetically pleasing they too can be quite uncomfortable and cannot be worn throughout the day.

Thankfully, there is a third way to correct vision. Laser surgery or LASIK, it is a popular refractive procedure that can correct common vision problems, such as nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. This procedure aims at reshaping the cornea so that light entering the eyes can be focused onto the retina for the person to have a clearer vision.

Laser surgery is pain-free and quick in most cases. Usually, it does not take more than 15 minutes to correct vision in both eyes. The results of this surgery can be seen in as little as 24 hours.

The first step of laser surgery to correct vision is to create a thin, circular flap in the cornea. This is then folded back to access the stroma or underlying cornea. An excimer laser is then used to remove some of the corneal tissue. For people suffering from nearsightedness, the cornea is flattened while for people suffering from farsightedness, the cornea is made steeper.

In cases of astigmatism, an irregular cornea is smoothened. Once the correct gradient has been achieved the corneal flap is put back into place and the cornea is allowed to heal naturally. There are no stitches or bandages required in a laser eye surgery. You may feel a temporary burning or itching sensation in your eyes immediately after the procedure. It is important not to rub your eyes or place any pressure on them.

Your vision may also be cloudy or blurred for the first few hours. A doctor will usually advise you to rest for a few days after the surgery so that your cornea can heal properly. In a few days, your eyesight should stabilize, though, in a few rare cases, it may take a little longer. You should also avoid any form of strenuous exercising for a few days after the surgery.

Though LASIK surgery has a very high success rate, there are very rare occasions where spectacles may still be needed even after the surgery. Thus LASIK is a choice of treatment for many who seek freedom from glasses.

3 Ways To Treat Freckles!

MD - Dermatology, MBBS
Dermatologist, Hyderabad
3 Ways To Treat Freckles!

Skin complexion varies and is caused by the skin pigmentation known as ‘melanin’, produced by cells called melanocytes, which gives skin the colour. The more amount of melanin, the darker the complexion. Melanin has a protective effect against sun exposure, as it reduces damage caused by the sun on the skin. It is proven that people with a darker complexion (with more melanin) are less prone to damage from sun exposure.

What are they? Freckles are cells that contain more amount of melanin compared to the surrounding areas. It is a common sight where some people have small, tiny black/brown spots on their faces. These spots may also be present on the hands, elbows, neck, back, etc., but are most obvious in the face. These are known as freckles.

Causes: Freckles are very common, and they are triggered by exposure to sunlight. The melanocytes absorb the sun and produce more melanin, thereby causing freckles. They are a natural reaction of the skin to the sun.

  • It runs in families, and children are likely to have freckles if the parents had them.

  • It also depends on complexion – fair people are more prone to have freckles than dark people.

  • Tanning, whether done by the sun or in a salon, also increases the chances of having freckles.

  • In some people, the freckles appear in the summer and disappear in the winter.

  • While some precancerous lesions may start off as tiny brown spots and be mistaken for freckles, freckles per se are not cancerous.

Management: While there are stories that freckles are angel kisses, they are not true. Freckles do not bring any good luck charm and can be prevented and avoided to improve overall skin and esthetic appeal.

Prevention is the first option, and if you are genetically disposed to have freckles, it is best to take measures that can reduce freckles. Avoiding or reducing sun exposure and using good sun protection can help in reducing the number of freckles and the darkness of the freckles.

Freckles can be treated by one of the following:

  1. Topical Creams- Though widely used, these contain bleaching agents which act on the entire skin and not just the freckles. Retin-A is one of the widely used products.

  2. Laser- Considered the best method for freckle removal, a beam of the laser is used to get rid of the unwanted melanocytes which produce melanin. This not only reduces freckles, it also improves skin tone and colour.

  3. Cryotherapy- Liquid nitrogen is used to freeze the melanin-producing cells, thereby removing freckles.

If you have freckles, try these measures for getting rid of them. Once that is done, preventing freckle formation with limiting sun exposure and sun protection is extremely essential.

All About Cataract Surgery!

Ophthalmologist, Gurgaon
All About Cataract Surgery!

A cataract is defined as a clouding of lens in the eye where your vision gets blurred. A cataract affects the eyes, when light that passes through the lens prevents a clearly formed image from reaching your retina. The disease is very common and usually develops as your eyes age or due to any injury caused to the tissues that cover your eye's lens.

Types of cataracts:

  1. Senile CataractThis is the commonest of all. It is age-related clouding of the lens. It can affect the near or distance vision and can also cause glare and change in glasses power.
  2. Secondary Cataract: It can be developed after surgery for other eye problems like glaucoma and other health conditions such as diabetes.
  3. Traumatic Cataract: It can develop many years later after an injury caused to your eye.
  4. Congenital Cataract: As the term explains, the disease may be inborn or some children might develop it at a later stage which often affects both eyes.
  5. Radiation Cataract: It can form after you are exposed to some form of radiation.

A cataract surgery involves the extraction or cleaning of the cloudy lens, which is then replaced by a clear artificial lens.

Why does it happen?

There are lens that lies behind our iris and pupil which act much like a camera lens. It helps concentrate light onto the retina at the back of our eye to form a sharply defined image. Besides, the lens also helps our eyes to adjust focus and allows us to see things clearly both far away and up close. The lens is composed of protein and water where the protein is arranged in a manner to keep the lens clear thereby letting light pass through it.

However, as we grow old, some of the protein starts to become thick and cloud a small lens area. This is known as a cataract. With the passage of time, it may inflate and cover more of the lens, making it difficult for us to see.

Besides, there are other causes of cataract such as smoking, addiction of alcohol, prolonged sunlight exposure, to name a few.

When should you opt for a cataract surgery?

Believe it or not, but till date no eye drop or medication has proven to reverse or prevent the formation of a cataract. If a cataract is affecting your nearsightedness or alteration in your prescription, then new prescription eyeglasses may help to better your blurred vision. However, the only treatment for a cataract is the surgical removal of your natural lens. And, most eye doctors recommend this surgery only when the problem becomes severe and starts hampering your day-to-day activities, such as studying or driving at night.

Cranial Arteritis

Cranial Arteritis
  • This is an important cause of headache in the elderly. As its name implies, it is inflammatory disease of the arterial wall with a predilection for the extracranial vessels, but at times of wide distribution, characteristically in one or both temple often over the occiput. The headache is severe but not continuous. The pain may spread through the face and jaw pain on eating due to the close proximity of the superfical temporal artery to the temporomandibular joint is common. The condition known as polymyalgia rheumatic is almost certainly a variant of the same condition. Only occasionally is this accompanied by the characteristic temporal headache of cranial arteritis, but the pathology of the two syndromes appears to be the same.
  •  In cranial arteritis, the temporal arteries can often be seen to be unduly prominent with pronounced tenderness precisely over the artery rather than diffusely on the scalp. The occipital arteries may also be thickened tender. One or more of the cranial arteries may be occluded pulseless. The effects of infarction most commonly affect the eyes. Partial or total loss of vision in one, or occasaionally in both of the eyes in succession may develop rapidly at any stage of disease. As a result, blindness may be the presenting symtom or may occur when the headache constitutional symptoms have not been prominent. The reinal vessels may appear quite normal, even when vision has been lost, as it is usually the ophthalmic artey rather than the retinal artery that is occluded. Less commonly, ischaemic vascular papillitis may occur. At a later stage the dise becomes pale. Visual loss seldom shows any degree of recovery. Involvement of the carotid artery may cause cerebral infarction the coronary and mesenteric arteries may also be involved.
  •  Polymyalgia rheumatica must be distnguished from myositis by the absence of weakness, but pain may make examination difficult.

Vitiligo - Natural Remedies That Can Help Manage it!

Vitiligo is a medical condition, which causes the loss of skin color due to loss of pigmentation. This usually occurs in blotches and looks very unsightly. Vitiligo is very unpredictable and can affect any part of your body. In some cases it also affects the inside of the mouth, eyes, and hair. Vitiligo is more noticeable on people with darker skin tone.

Symptoms of Vitiligo:

  1. Premature graying or whitening of the hair in your eyebrows, eyelashes, scalp, and beard. This usually occurs before the age of 35.
  2. Skin discoloration can also occur from other parts of the body such as hands, feet, abdomen, neck and other areas.
  3. Change or loss of the color of the retina (inner layer on the eyeball).
  4. Discolored patches on and around the navel, rectum and genitals.

What causes vitiligo?

A medical disorder where your immune system destroys and attacks the melanin forming pigments in your skin. This is known as an autoimmune disorder and by far is the most common cause behind vitiligo. An event such as sudden or prolonged stress, sunburn, or being exposed to industrial chemicals. A history of family members or relatives having vitiligo in the past.

Ayurvedic Treatments for Vitiligo:

  1. Duckweed: This is a type of water plant and is very rich in a mineral called lignin. It is considered a natural treatment for skin disorders and vitiligo. It will also help to restore your natural skin color.
  2. Sun screen: If you already have vitiligo, exposure in the sun can make it worse, so applying a sunscreen with SPF 30 or above (or an appropriate level of sunscreen protection) can protect your skin from further damage.
  3. Papaya: This fruit is great for restoring and reviving melanin (responsible for skin pigmentation). Drinking papaya juice or rubbing papaya on the affected area can reduce vitiligo to some extent.
  4.  Clothing: Avoid tight clothing or clothing with elastic that restricts circulation as it might lead to a vitiligo patch. In addition, protect the skin from the sun and artificial sources of UV light with protective clothing or a broad-spectrum sunscreen. Watch skin reactions to plastic, rubber and even leather as these can cause vitiligo in some people.

Ayurvedic Treatment for Vitiligo emphasizes on treating the root cause. The root cause of Vitiligo is gradually treated with herbal formulations to restore pigmentation over the white patch area and to establish the lost immunity by correcting the body metabolism. In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!
