Symptoms of osteoarthritis may include joint pain and progressive stiffness that develops gradually. Symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis may include painful swelling, inflammation, and stiffness in the fingers, arms, legs, and wrists occurring in the same joints on both sides of the body, especially upon awakening. Osteoarthritis: Symptoms And Treatment

Osteoarthritis: Symptoms And Treatment

Osteoarthritis is a Non Inflammatory disease that affects many joints, knee joint most common. In normal joint, a firm, rubbery material called cartilage covers the end of each bone. Cartilage provides a smooth, gliding surface for joint motion and acts as a cushion between the bones. In Osteoarthritis, the cartilage breaks down, causing pain, swelling and problems moving the joint. This disease, that mostly affects women, worsens over the time and should be treated as early as possible.

Symptoms Of Osteoarthritis
Symptoms of osteoarthritis vary, depending on which joints are affected and how severely they are affected. However, the most common symptoms are pain and stiffness, particularly first thing in the morning or after resting. Affected joints may get swollen, especially after extended activity. These symptoms tend to build over time rather than show up suddenly. Some of the common symptoms include:

  1. Sore or stiff joints – after inactivity or overuse
  2. Limited range of motion or stiffness that goes away after movement
  3. Clicking or cracking sound when joint bends
  4. Mild swelling around a joint
  5. Pain that is worse after activity or toward the end of the day

Treatment Options For Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is a chronic (long-term) disease. There is no cure, but treatments are available to manage symptoms. Long-term management of the disease will include several factors:

  1. Managing symptoms, such as pain, stiffness and swelling
  2. Improving joint mobility and flexibility
  3. Maintaining a healthy weight
  4. Getting enough of exercise

Physical Activity: One of the most beneficial ways to manage OA is to get moving. While it may be hard to think of exercise when the joints hurt, moving is considered an important part of the treatment plan. Simple activities like walking around the neighborhood or taking a fun, easy exercise class can reduce pain and help maintain (or attain) a healthy weight. Strengthening exercises build muscles around OA-affected joints, easing the burden on those joints and reducing pain. Aerobic exercise helps to improve stamina and energy levels and also help to reduce excess weight. Talk to a doctor before starting an exercise program.

Weight Management: Excess weight adds additional stress to weight-bearing joints, such as the hips, knees, feet and back. Losing weight can help people with OA reduce pain and limit further joint damage. The basic rule for losing weight is to eat fewer calories and increase physical activity.

Stretching: Slow, gentle stretching of joints may improve flexibility, lessen stiffness and reduce pain. Exercises such as is great ways to manage stiffness.

Braces: For varus and valgus deformity of knee joint, brace very helpful like Unloader Knee Brace has importent role in Osteoarthritis knee.

Management: Medical:
Glucosamine/Chondroitin- Glucosamine/Chondroitin 1500 mg/1200 mg daily, they are diet supplement used in mild and moderate osteoarthritis knee. Major component of joint cartilage. Supplements are derived from the shells of shellfish (such as shrimp, lobster and crab) or from vegetable sources. Slows deterioration of cartilage, relieves osteoarthritis(OA) pain and improves joint mobility.

For Pain Management
NSAIDs
Cox-2 inhibitors

Opioids

Intraarticular Injections

  1. Intraarticular Glucocorticoids: Mainly Indicated when pain persist despite of pain killer. Its effective for short-term pain relief < 12 wks. There may be acute flare in pain 48 hrs post-injection.
  2. Hyaluronans (e.g. Synvisc): Its indicated when pain persists despite other agents. Its like Synthetic joint fluid. Pain relief similar to steroid injections. 60-70% patients respond well , pain relief approx 6 months to 1 year

Surgical Management

Knee pain or functional status has failed to improve with non-operative management

Types of Surgery

  1. Arthroscopic Irrigation
  2. Arthroscopic Debridement
  3. High Tibial Osteotomy
  4. Partial Knee Arthroplasty
  5. Total Knee Arthroplasty

Which type of surgery you require it will be decide by your orthopaedic surgeon after clinical and radiological examination.

Joint Replacement SurgeryJoint surgery can repair or replace severely damaged joints, especially hips or knees. A doctor will refer an eligible patient to an orthopaedic surgeon to perform the procedure.
Knee replacement has become the most common form of joint replacement surgery. Between 1991 and 2010, the incidence of knee replacements increased by over 161%, due partly to improvements in the science of knee replacement implants, experience of surgeons, and the growing population of knee replacement patients. Although public perception can be influenced by negative advertising and press, the fact is that knee replacement surgery is one of the most successful surgical procedures performed today.

Success rates and quality of life improvements for knee replacement patients are reliably very high. Nine out of 10 knee replacement patients experience an immediate relief from knee pain, and 95% report they are satisfied with their procedure. Approximately 90% of replacement knee joints last 10 years, while 80% are good for 20+ years, depending on patient health and activity levels. Outcomes vary from patient to patient depend upon level of deformity and grade of Osteoarthritis.

Positive Attitude: Many studies have demonstrated that a positive outlook can boost the immune system and increase a person's ability to handle pain.

Preventive Measures

  1. People with endocrine disorders are prone to osteoarthritis. This includes hypothyroidism. You must immediately begin medications if you are diagnosed with thyroid conditions.
  2. In several cases, osteoporosis is genetic. One may inherit a tendency to develop bone deformities as he/she ages.
  3. X-ray after regular intervals helps the doctors to understand the condition of your bones and joints. This helps to prescribe exercises, medications and diet accordingly.
  4. Yoga helps to maintain joint flexibility and increase bone strength. It also helps to prevent stress and anxiety.
  5. A diet rich in protein and calcium helps to prevent degeneration and brittleness in bones. It is important to go out into the sun once in a while and soak up as much vitamin D as possible. This is a very healthy habit and contributes to the well-being of the entire skeletal systems.

Joint Problems - How They Can Be Solved?

Joint Problems - How They Can Be Solved?

If we need to name this age of medical science with a word- certainly this is the age of Joint problems Osteoarthritis. Those were the days when joint pains were thought to be associated with the old age only, but nowadays these pains are presenting in all age groups. There is no age of Joint pains as of now. In an age of 25, even you can find a patient with osteoarthritis.

Age was a limit for such conditions but now things are changing fast.

  • We are eating more nutritious foods, we are in better comforts still our joints are giving up? There is something wrong with us and with our system. Certainly, we need to look back at the things and need to check everything so that we can manage the things in a better way.
  • When a person comes with Gout that is increased uric acid in the body western system of medicines he will be told to lower down the uric acid simply by taking some of the medicines. But this is not the solution for the problem. Problem is not increased uric acid the core problem is- why this uric acid is being produced in the body in this much of quantity, until unless we don't rectify the system due to which uric acid is being produced in abundant. This is the difference in Ayurveda and western system of medicines. We at Sukhayu follow the same tradition of Ayurveda to rectify the metabolism of proteins so that we can remove the extra uric acid from the body.
  • So culprit is the system which is producing the extra uric acid not the uric acid. We need to address the culprit for sure, not just the uric acid, alone.
  • The same is applicable to the osteoarthritis. It is now in a fashion to give Vitamin D, Calcium, Glucosamine along with some pain killers and they just tell that Cartilage is damaged in your body. These things they continue for 6 months and one day they tell us that no, now you need to go for the knee joint replacement?

Is it the solution!

  • The first and foremost solution for the problem is to “save” the knees and cartilages from the damage and basic way to that is “education” what we need to share with a patient as a physician. Second thing is to promote certain types of the diet for a patient according to his/her Prakruti so that he/she can get a proper amount of the calcium and vitamin D. We are not nourishing human bodies by using all these medicines we are only nourishing the pharmaceutical companies.
  • Ayurveda says that these are age related problems and we need to work on a pattern to reduce the momentum of the age. If age appears aggressively, it will bring its all complications along with and will shatter the quality of the life for sure. So the main concern should be to slow down the process of aging with certain remedies along with certain diet and lifestyle modulations.
  • In last many years we have seen a lot of patients who came to us and asked for weight loss, even they were suffering with osteoarthritis. Because every second person asked them to reduce weight only. But as per Ayurveda osteoarthritis is a condition of Vata Dosha and if we kept on loosing weight in a patient we will be aggravating the Vata dosha which will again increase the problem, that is why we cannot do it scientifically (as per Ayurved) but beyond this the question is of a different approach-
  • If a person cannot walk or stand even, how can you ask him/her to loose weight?
  • Are we promoting some of the surgical techniques to reduce weight in “hide” of the osteoarthritis?
  • Things are not easy with joint pains, we do agree on this but when it comes to Ayurved, it is the only science which deals with the health-happiness and life not only about diseases. Sukhayu, as name tells – Life full of happiness!! We are committed to give the best of the health facilities to promote the complete of health of a person.

As per a research – More than 60% of the knee replacement are done without a requirement.

Eggshells - 5 Reasons You Must Start Eating Them Today!

Eggshells - 5 Reasons You Must Start Eating Them Today!

There is no doubt about the fact that eggs are one of the most nutritious and healthy foods known to us. All over the world people include eggs as a part of their healthy breakfast diet. But, surprisingly, just like the eggs, the eggshells come with various nutrients too and do have an array of health benefits to offer. Though the majority of people tend to dispose of the eggshells once the edible parts are taken, just as the egg yolk or egg white, egg shells can be consumed too.

Let’s have a look at some of the major health benefits of having eggshells.

  1. Ensures overall good health: Studies have shown that the best way of consuming eggshells is in the form of powder. And by regularly adding this powder to the various foods one takes, he or she can easily safeguard their overall physical well-being. While the hyaluronic acid present in the eggshells can make your skin glow, the other elements of the eggshells like chondroitin, collagen, and glucosamine help in alleviating joint pains and stiffness.
  2. Eliminates toxic components: When it comes to cleansing the blood, or eliminating harmful toxic components from it, eggshell powder can be a great solution. By having at least three glasses of eggshell powder and water mixture every day, one can effectively remove the toxic agents from the body.
  3. Treats thyroid glands too: You can prepare a home remedy for thyroid problems by crushing eggshells, adding lemon juice to it, storing it in the refrigerator for at least 7 days and have 1 teaspoon of it, mixed with alcoholic beverage and honey, every day in an empty stomach.
  4. Offers a cure to Gastric UlcerWhen it comes to the most effective natural remedies for curing gastric ulcer, the use of eggshells is of great importance. The vital nutrients that the eggshells possess make them ideal for gastric ulcer conditions. A mixture of softened eggshell powder and hot milk can cure ulcer or gastritis when taken regularly.
  5. Makes the bones strong: Calcium being one of the most important minerals in the body, to keep the bones strong and healthy, meeting with the daily calcium requirement of the body becomes essential. And the eggshells being among the richest sources of calcium found, including this source of pure calcium helps in making the bones stronger. Consisting of 95% calcium, the eggshells also promote healthy teeth.

As can be observed eggshells do have a significant nutritional worth in the maintaining of good health. Therefore, utilizing the eggshells for making a smooth eggshell powder instead of throwing them in the bins and adding the powder to the diet certainly offers enough potential for a steady maintenance of one's health.

Options Other Than Knee Replacement

There is no cure for arthritis but there are a number of treatments that may help relieve the pain and disability it can cause.

  • As with other arthritic conditions, initial treatment of arthritis of the knee is nonsurgical. Your doctor may recommend a range of treatment options.
  • Lifestyle modifications. Some changes in your daily life can protect your knee joint and slow the progress of arthritis.
  • Minimize activities that aggravate the condition, such as climbing stairs.
  • Switching from high impact activities (like jogging or tennis) to lower impact activities (like swimming or cycling) will put less stress on your knee.
  • Losing weight can reduce stress on the knee joint, resulting in less pain and increased function.
  • Physical therapy. Specific exercises can help increase range of motion and flexibility, as well as help strengthen the muscles in your leg. Your doctor or a physical therapist can help develop an individualized exercise program that meets your needs and lifestyle.
  • Assistive devices. Using devices such as a cane, wearing shock-absorbing shoes or inserts, or wearing a brace or knee sleeve can be helpful. A brace assists with stability and function, and may be especially helpful if the arthritis is centered on one side of the knee. There are two types of braces that are often used for knee arthritis: an" unloader" brace shifts weight away from the affected portion of the knee, while a" support" brace helps support the entire knee load.
  • Other remedies. Applying heat or ice, using pain-relieving ointments or creams, or wearing elastic bandages to provide support to the knee may provide some relief from pain.
  • Medications. Several types of drugs are useful in treating arthritis of the knee. Because people respond differently to medications, your doctor will work closely with you to determine the medications and dosages that are safe and effective for you.
  • Over-the-counter, non-narcotic pain relievers and anti-inflammatory medications are usually the first choice of therapy for arthritis of the knee. Acetaminophen is a simple, over-the-counter pain reliever that can be effective in reducing arthritis pain.
  • Like all medications, over-the-counter pain relievers can cause side effects and interact with other medications you are taking. Be sure to discuss potential side effects with your doctor.
  • Another type of pain reliever is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, or nsaid (pronounced" en-said"). Nsaids, such as ibuprofen and naproxen, are available both over-the-counter and by prescription. A cox-2 inhibitor is a special type of nsaid that may cause fewer gastrointestinal side effects. Common brand names of cox-2 inhibitors include celebrex (celecoxib) and mobic (meloxicam, which is a partial cox-2 inhibitor). A cox-2 inhibitor reduces pain and inflammation so that you can function better. If you are taking a cox-2 inhibitor, you should not use a traditional nsaid (prescription or over-the-counter). Be sure to tell your doctor if you have had a heart attack, stroke, angina, blood clot, hypertension, or if you are sensitive to aspirin, sulfa drugs or other nsaids.
  • Corticosteroids (also known as cortisone) are powerful anti-inflammatory agents that can be injected into the joint these injections provide pain relief and reduce inflammation; however, the effects do not last indefinitely. Your doctor may recommend limiting the number of injections to three or four per year, per joint, due to possible side effects.
  • In some cases, pain and swelling may" flare" immediately after the injection, and the potential exists for long-term joint damage or infection. With frequent repeated injections, or injections over an extended period of time, joint damage can actually increase rather than decrease.
  • Disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (dmards) are used to slow the progression of rheumatoid arthritis. Drugs like methotrexate, sulfasalazine, and hydroxychloroquine are commonly prescribed.
  • In addition, biologic dmards like etanercept (embril) and adalimumab (humira) may reduce the body's overactive immune response. Because there are many different drugs today for rheumatoid arthritis, a rheumatology specialist is often required to effectively manage medications.
  • Viscosupplementation involves injecting substances into the joint to improve the quality of the joint fluid.
  •  Glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate, substances found naturally in joint cartilage, can be taken as dietary supplements. Although patient reports indicate that these supplements may relieve pain, there is no evidence to support the use of glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate to decrease or reverse the progression of arthritis.

Knee Pain - How Medication & Injections Can Help?

Are you experiencing knee pain and seek ideal treatment for your condition? Knee pain is a very common issue which may develop in any bony structure of your body, comprising your kneecap, the knee joint, ligaments, and cartilages of your knee. Knee pain is common in people of all ages, and simple home remedies can be used to treat knee pain effectively. In severe cases, professional treatment or help is required.

Symptoms
• The location of your knee pain varies based on the structure that is involved.
• Your whole knee may swell up and seem painful in the case of infections and inflammatory processes. On the other hand, a bone fracture may show symptoms in one specific area.
• The severity of knee pain may vary from acute to serious and disabling.

Other common symptoms associated with knee pain include the following:
• Difficulty in walking because of knee instability.
• Limping because of discomfort.
• Difficulty in going up and down the staircase because of ligament damage.
Swelling and redness.
• The inability of extending the knee.

Causes
Knee pain may occur because of several reasons, and factors. Generally, knee pain is classified into 3 primary categories. They are:
• Acute injuries that include broken bones, a meniscal tear, or a torn ligament.
• Medication conditions which commonly include the likes of arthritis, and various infections.
• Conditions that occur on account of chronic use and overuse, such as patellar syndromes, tendinitis, bursitis, and osteoarthritis.

Treatment

• There are several treatment measures for knee pain, based on the cause, your condition, and severity.
• The most common treatment procedures include the following:

Medications
• Several medications are used for the treatment of an underlying medical condition that causes knee pain, for effective pain relief.

Physical therapy
• Strengthening of the muscles surrounding the ankle makes it stable and helps in achieving the best mechanical movements.
• This is effective in avoiding injuries and preventing an existing injury from worsening.

Injections
• Several injectable medications are injected into your knee directly.
• Corticosteroids and lubricants are commonly used for dealing with inflammation in the knee, and for improving movement and pain.

Surgery
• In case of severe and persistent knee pain, a surgery may be required. Knee operations include arthroscopic surgeries, total knee replacement and much more.
• Arthroscopic surgery is the most common procedure in which injuries in your knee are repaired and pieces of loose cartilage and bone are removed.
• During partial knee replacement, the damaged parts of your knee are replaced with metal and plastic parts. Only a part of the knee joint gets replaced.

There are several other therapies that are also beneficial for the treatment of knee pain. You can opt for acupuncture, which is ideal for osteoarthritis patients. Glucosamine and chondroitin supplements are also prescribed in some cases. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult an Orthopedist.
