Lubiprostone is administered to patients suffering from severe constipation. It is used in cases of irritable bowel syndrome, or when certain opioid medications are responsible for chronic constipation. The drug affects the intestinal muscles by boosting up the the fluid secretion to the intestines, thereby easing the movement of bowels. The drug is effective in reducing water retention, bloating, easing abdominal discomfort and helping in satisfactory relieving of oneself. The drug belongs to the chlorine channel activator group of drugs. The doctor administers the dosage depending upon your age, food habits, response to treatment and other medical conditions. This medication is not recommended to those suffering from diarrhoea. Some of the side effects include, gastric pain, vomiting, nausea, dizziness, bloating, fever with persistent headaches, joint pain or muscular cramps, swelling of the arms or legs or having difficulty in sleeping.
