1) Your Cholesterol levels are high and at your age first line of treatment is to try lifestyle changes and diet modifications. If after 6-8 weeks of these changes your lipid profile still remains deranged then you should be put on medications along with theses lifestyle changes. 2) There are no major side-effects of rosuvastatin and side-effects always have to be looked from the perspective of risk and benefit ration, high cholesterol has risk of causing heart attack while taking this medicine can save you from that risk with probably minimal side-effect which may not even happen in your case. The choice is yours. 3) You should begin with lifestyle changes like - daily 40 mins of exercise like brisk walking, quitting smoking and drinking alcohol, taking a detailed diet consult with a dietitian for a low cholesterol diet and avoid drinking or eating foods with high sugar content like soft drinks, packaged juices etc.

They can be taken together. Statins help when a person has already had a serious blockage, they can be omitted in most people without blockage.

Thanks for the query. I have seen the details given. According to me there is really no need to for for any statins. As total cholesterol is 214 mg, LDL 123 mg & TGL is 176 mg. These can be brought to normal level by dietary adjustment and regular exercise. So I do not see the need for two statins Atorvastatin (in Ecosprin AV75) & Rosuvastatin. I would not have recommended either of them As regards rosuvastatin causing diabetes, this is not entirely true. There is a slight increase in the risk of developing diabetes T2 after using statins for over 4 to 5 years, but benefits out weigh the risk. In your situation lifestyle change and diet change will be more beneficial. Thanks.

My husband is 28 years old. High cholesterol values detected recently. Tc-242, ldl-181, hdl-42, tg-94. His father and paternal grandfather died of myocardial infarction. Father died at a younger age of around 42 yrs. I doubt is it due to his genetic predisposition that is leading to this very high levels like apob100 or ldl receptor mutation. If so kindly advice regarding management of his condition. What drugs to start with, ideal dose to start with? I'm his wife and I'm a medicine graduate by profession. Kindly help and give your valuable advice. Thanking you.

Hello doctor. From the above history and investigations, it does not imply there is a genetic defect, if there is family history, it can also mean there is a problem with the diet and lifestyle. As you already know the problems, you can advise him better and make sure he has a healthy lifestyle. Generally in case of inherited disorders the cholestrol levels are very high. I have seen patients with 800+ cholestrol. So the basic protocol applies here too. First diet and lifestyle modifications, then you can start with statin treatment if required. Generally atorvastatin is started as 10 or 20 mg hs, based on the cholestrol levels. Lipid profile is monitored over time and the dose adjusted accordingly. Do not hesitate to ask if you have more queries.
