About Colchicine

The main use of Colchicine is to prevent the occurrence of gout flares in adults. While effective in this treatment, Colchicine is not an analgesic, and hence, cannot be used to treat pain caused to a patient due to any other reason. This medicine is administered orally, and is available in the form of capsules. It can be taken with or without meals. The general recommended dosage for adults is 0.6 mg per day, while the maximum dose that can be taken on a daily basis is 1.2 mg. The tablets come in the form of 0.6 mg capsules.

The adverse effects caused by Colchicine can often be reduced by either lowering the dosage or discontinuing the course of treatment. The most common of these are gastrointestinal disorders, which include diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain and occasional vomiting. The drug has been known to cause sudden falls in an individual’s blood count, alopecia or hair loss, skin disorders such as dermatitis and rashes, problems with the sensory motor nerves, liver damage, and abnormal sperm counts in males. It could also cause neuromuscular toxicity, which can manifest in the form of muscle pain or fatigue. Overdosing could turn out to be fatal.
