About Mannitol

Mannitol is used to reduce swelling in the body due to excessive water retention. It is used in cases of kidney failure, to reduce the mass of the brain, to reduce intraocular pressure if no other means are available, and to promote the excretion of toxic substances present in the body through urine secretion.

It is also prescribed to reduce of increased intraocular pressure; promoting urinary excretion of toxic substances; genitourinary irrigant in transurethral prostatic resection or other transurethral surgical procedures.

The dose of Mannitol is regulated according to the nature and severity of the condition of the individual being treated, his or her fluid requirements and urinary output.

Contraindications include kidney failure, lung congestion, swelling of lungs, severe dehydration, bleeding in the brain, progressive renal dysfunction and progressive heart failure.

Commonly reported side effects include: lung congestion, acidosis, fluid and electrolyte imbalance, dryness of mouth, thirst, urinary retention, nausea, headache, blurred visions, vomiting, dehydration, arm pain, dizziness, tachycardia, fever and chest pains, similar to angina.

This medicine must not be administered to patients who display hypersensitivity to any of the components of the medicine. Care should be taken to avoid overdose as that may lead to congestive heart failure or swelling in the lungs.
