Eye is considered to be a precious organ. However, despite being precious, we ignore and lack the care they require.

Today’s lifestyle has been continuously contributing to the deteriorating health that include eyes as well. Every individual has suffered from one or some other form of eye problem in his/her lifetime. Long working hours on computer, being in front of a computer screen for entertainment purposes, playing electronic games, inappropriately lit workplace, undisciplined working habits, and such others are a few reasons people have difficulty in maintaining their eye health.

One of the most common complaints people have related to eye health when they visit physicians or ophthalmologist is a visual disturbance. Not only adults, children are affected by these problems as well.


Some of the common symptoms of visual disturbances are as follows:

  • Eye strain

  • Blurred vision

  • Headaches

  • Dryness and irritation in the eyes

  • Slow refocus

  • Light sensitivity

  • Double vision

  • Neck and back pains


Such symptoms may also direct towards a serious underlying eye condition. Hence, it is advised to consult an ophthalmologist if these symptoms persist over a period of time.

Types of Vision Disturbances

There are typically three types of visual disturbances.

  • Blind spots: dark holes in the visual field

  • Blurred vision: unable to see fine details and losing vision sharpness

  • Halos

Apart from allopathic medical treatment, visual disturbances can be treated with Ayurveda.

Treating Vision Disturbance with Ayurveda

In Ayurveda, problems associated with vision disturbances are given in Drishtigata Rogas. It is mentioned in the Ayurveda that all the cases related to the vision disturbances are linked to the Timira-Kacha-Linganasha complex. The most common condition that form the initial stages of eye problems in today’s age, myopia, can be associated with Timir (Cataract). Moreover, vision loss related to diseases such as cataract is referred to as Linganasha in Ayurveda.


Apart from these ayurvedic terms related to eye disorders, concept of Chakshushya, anything which is good for eye health, prescribes the diet, therapeutic methods, as well as medication in treating and improving the eye health.


Ayurvedic treatment involves the regulation and modulation in various parameters associated with overall health. These includes:

  • Panchkarma: Virechana, Nasya, Vamana, and Basti.

  • Internal Therapies: Chakshushya.

  • External Therapies: Anjana, Netra Tarpana, Seka, Bidalaka, Abhyanga, Ashtothana, Shiro dhara.

  • Food Advice: Diet that includes vitamin A, Beta-carotene, Vitamin E, Lutein, Zinc, DHA, Green leafy vegetables, Fish, Eggs, Nuts, Beans, Carrots, Oranges and other citrus fruits, etc.

  • Activities: Asanas, Meditation, Pranayamas, eye exercises, Trataka, limiting blue screen time, diverting vision when the vision is strenuous.

Visual Disturbances are not necessarily related to a specific eye disorder but are associated with the daily lifestyle. The constant use of blue screens, for example, may lead to blurry vision, a visual disturbance. Ayurvedic treatment may help in treating such visual disturbances and help in recovering vision.
